Full Version: Kids play choking game

Parents - have y'all talked to your kids about this? Surely you've heard of it already. Kids are choking themselves to get a little buzz off of passing out, but they wind up choking themselves to death. It's horrible.

What are you supposed to say to your kids? What if they didn't know about it until you told them and then it made them curious to try it?

Parents. I don't know how you do it.

We did this when we were kids in the 70's. It is dangerous but its nothing new. and Heathers right
unless you know your kid has already done it if you tell them about it they will be trying it the next day

I can think of a couple people in here I'd like to try the choking game on biggrin.gif

I was talking to my teenage son about it, and he said, "Yeah, mom, I know. Dad already talked to me about it. He said that he used to do that as a teenager!" Ugh! That seems to be all he heard!

What ever happened to good old fashioned pot for a little buzz. biggrin.gif

We set each others shirts on fire - 'loser' stripped last. Some scars last longer wink.gif

I Agree w/ U -

Better children learn to flagellate properly, slam dancing and such smile.gif

I had never heard of this until a year or two ago. When I was a teenager, we did what Udmas suggested!

My kids are a little older, but I'll get their opinion on it and report back.

I thought that was associated with some kind of kinky sex. Now little kids are doing it? Without the sex part, it can't be much fun! ohmy.gif
Unbelieveable
With my Son only being six i personaly feel it's unnecessary to even bring it up, if he was in middle School i would feel different. For some Children a talk from the Parent's can steer them clear, and for other's it just spark's that curiosity right off and they will try it, it's absolutely a touch and go issue.

Kids across the country are dying from playing the Choking Game. Typically good kids aged 9-14, my son included. Dylan was 11 years old in October 2005 when he decided to try 'playing' the game by himself. I was in the living room and he was in his bedroom, I went to check on him and what I found, no parent should ever find. These children have no intent of ending their lives, they are looking for the 'rush' sensation.

There are warning signs beyond bruises or marks on the neck:
*Frequent often severe headaches
*marks on furniture or closet rods from previous activity
*items tied in strange knots (bed sheets, tee-shirts, belts, shoelaces)
*locked bedroom doors or a need for increased privacy

There are more but keep in mind NONE of these signs are required for a child to be playing.
Dylan had none of these signs and I had never heard of the Choking Game. That alone was a dangerous combination.

My ignorance and his naivety of the activity contributed to his death. Kids think this is 'safe' - it's not illegal or drugs after all. What they don't realize is the extreme danger they put themselves in EVERY time they play. Please take the opportunity I wish I'd had - talk to your kids about it.

I read about this in Seventeen a few months ago. Bizarre and scary and plain weird. What are these kids thinking?

I remember this in the 70's...they found a kid in a closet--hanging from the rod. I discussed this with my kids--they are teens--and they both said, "Ugh..how stupid...you could die..."..so I guess they got the message...

There was also some poor mom on Dr. Phil with this item one day and she had another son & could not get past the death to tend to her young son--I hope this is not KateB...if so, we thank her for the info--but please tend to the other child...

No I wasn't on Dr. Phil- that was Sarah Pacette mother of Gabriel Mordecai (passed away May 2005 from Choking Game). Dylan was my only child. With him in Heaven my time is substantially available for educating parents and other to the dangers of this 'game'.

Choking game?

What a dangerous and silly game? I am surprised so many on this board either did it or know someone
who has. I will definitely speak to my daughter and let her see how silly and dangerous this so called "game" is.

"locked bedroom doors or a need for increased privacy".

It always kills me when parents won't search their children's room because of "privacy". When a parent is paying the bills their is no privacy. I hear of children having guns and drugs in some parents' houses. That would've never worked in my parents' house and it doesn't work in mine.

A good place to start snooping in your kids' room is underneath the bottom dresser drawer. I hid my cigarettes there. Pull the bottom drawer all the way out and there's a nice little hidey hole space there that no one usually thinks about.

Don't try to be your kid's friend. They need parents more than anything!

I know about that spot I used to hide things there (not cigarettes nor those "funny" lil cigarettes either).

Maby we should give some of these young moms ideas where us ole folks hid our stuff.

I hid somethings in my mothers good high heels. Moved it when she dressed up.
Hid things up in the over head door to the attic.
Heather
I had a girlfriend that hid stuff in a tampon box. Her mother didn't use them and her father would never go near them.

In the movies, they put stuff in ziploc bags and submerse it in the water tank of a toilet.

Between the mattress and boxspring, of course.

Remove the heat register cover thing and tape your goodies to the inside wall of the vent.

I used to hide things under the floorboards in my bedroom. We lived in an old home and my room had the original wood floors with wide wooden planks. A few of the boards were not properly nailed down and I was able to lift them enough to stash things underneath.
