I got a new cd burner (LiteOn 5236) that is supposed to read DVDs but it doesn't. I have set the region code but that did not help. I have burned data DVDs on another system and they read fine on all other systems I try. I have not tried a video DVD yet.
I reinstalled the drivers and looked for firmware updates (none available).
Any suggestions?

I have no suggestions... other than I have that problem with dvd's burned on a dvd settop box that won't play in any computer's dvd drives.

Are you sure the format (+R, -R, +RW, or -RW) of the burned DVD is compatible with your drive? My Pioneer CD/DVD-ROM drive on my computer won't play +R discs. My set top Panasonic dvd player won't play anything but -R/-RW discs.
Liteon usually has all formats working with their stuff, though.

SMan, checking the specs on Liteon's site for his drive, show it handles + and -.

I don't know if this matters or not with data discs, but has the DVD been finalized for viewing on all players? I've forgotten to finalize discs before when recording tv shows and the discs won't play on other players.

I am pretty sure they were finalized. But I can browse store bought DVDs(that cam with text books) either.
I can view the DVDs in questionon another PC so I am pretty sure it is the DVD drive.

LiteOn sent me a firmware update and said if that did not work to send it back to where I bought it.
It did not work

and Tiger Direct won't take items back after 30 days and I don't have the original packaging.
$50 down the drain.

That's too bad, CPD. I've had good luck with my Liteon burners.
Speaking of burning DVDs, anybody know if the price of dual-layer recordable DVDs are coming down yet? Last time I checked they were still about $8 each.

A couple of e-mails to LiteOn and I got and RMA # and authorization to return the drive to LiteOn!!!
The next question is how long until I get the new one?
Oh well I am just happy with the response from the mfg. They were very helpful. They are (temporarily) off my Sh!t list.
