While I won't use the clinic, I will use your posting as a reminder to get my dog in for his yearly shots and the kennel cough stuff squirted up his snout. Thanks!

FYI...in PA a pet owner has a choice of a 1-year rabies shot, or a 3-year rabies shot for cats or dogs. They cost the same. Obviously the 3-yr is a better deal.

I had 5 dogs and 1 cat to treat, and they didn't tell me about it until 3 of the dogs had been given the 1-yr shot.

Check with the folks at your clinice BEFORE they start giving the shots...might save you a few bucks and bunches of headaches (transporting 5 dogs and 1 cat was quite a party in my little Blazer!)

Yea. We did that run last Fall over here. Had to take two autos. 4 cats,3 dogs. It was a circus. wink.gif The vet asked how many and he lined up the shots,I did the paper work, hubby brought them in two at a time and bing, bang, boom done! biggrin.gif Maybe next time we'll call ahead and warn the vet and ladies! laugh.gif

The 3 yr shot is available if your pet is eligible. You need to bring proof of prior vaccination in order to get it though, but it does only cost $5 for the 3yr dose.

Thanks Moms,

I may use that clinic this year. I am so confused about which cat is due for what shot. I have to call before we go. I make appts usually for two at a time (since my boys are older now and not around to help as much.) So, I rush home from work, and can never find both of the cats that are due. So, usually round up the two that I can find and see what they need when I get there. Then have to reschedule the one that was hiding. They must have ESP! This year, I may get DH, and three sons to all go to the clinic. I'll stay home!

Can never take the dog with the cats. Dog love, love, loves the cats. They tolerate her at best. So, doesn't work together. One cat, when he gets mad, knows exactly how to splay his front legs so there is no way I can ever get him back in the cat carrier. So, it is a circus trying to grab the carrier and the cat, pocketbook to boot. Run out to the car. Come back in to pay the bill and reschedule for the next run! One cat always gets car sick and throws up, another crys as loud as a baby, and the third, God bless him, loves the ride and sits looking at the back window. When I take the dog, she thinks all the animals in the waiting room are brand new playmates, just for her!! So, her tail starts wagging up and storm and she just wants to join in on the fun. Alot of her obedience lessons go out the window. I am tired thinking of it. Yep, the men are gonna do it this year!

You might what to ask your vet if they do house calls. I brought it up as a joke and it turned out that for an extra $20, my vet makes house calls.

Rabies vaccine? no.

Minor correction - I answered my own question. You can buy it online, but in our area, only residents of PA and VA can do so. In MD and WV state law requires it be administered by a Vet.

Some other pet meds can be bought and administered by MD residents, but not rabies vaccine. So my advice is to move to VA or PA where they realize it doesn't take a medical degree to give your animal a simple shot.

Or, I dunno, order some online for example here: http://vetmeddirect.com/i_003PFZ22-10_Defensor+3+10+dose.php and then just drive your pet across the state line into VA or PA where it's legal for you to administer it yourself.

In fact, it appears that rabies is the only pet vaccine you can't give your pet yourself in the state of MD. Looks like it may be some kind of trick the state is using to force people to report to a gov't agent to get it so they can register everybody and track their pets. I know that sounds a little conspiracy-theory-ish, but it's true. You can get all of your other regular pet vaccines without restriction, and not all states restrict rabies vaccine, so it's not for any kind of bona fide veterinary medical reason...
