Full Version: decorating idea

I got this idea that I might buy some old, unique book shelves and start collecting old children's books. Would that be an utterly ridiculous idea being that I'm not a mother and probably will never be a mother? It just seems like a unique decorating idea, but I wouldn't want to frighten the parents into thinking I was preparing for the coming of their grandchild.

And I'd collect books I loved as a child, perferrably unique or old looking versions with spines damaged or weathered covers or printed with pretty, gold, creative fonts.

Does this strike you as the behavior of a spinster?

Decorating with childhood mementos or items that bring back fond memories is perfectly natural. Just don't over do it. Have I told you about my Star Wars room? tongue.gif laugh.gif

Speaking as a childless bibliophile, I say it sounds very cool.

Check out Abebooks.com for old, used books. When I was trying to complete my Rex Stout collection, it was a very valuable resource.

Heather,

I think that's a great idea! We are all kids in bigger bodies anyway! I love the original Winnie the Pooh and have so many fond memories of reading to my boys. One of my oldest sons favorite was Drummer Hoff and now he reads it to my grandson. Knows it by heart. There are so many childrens books that are still fun to read. Enjoy!

Would it be only books you loved as child? Or all children's books? If it's the former, are there enough childhood books that you loved to fill one or more shelves?
Unbelieveable
Heather,

I think that is a great idea. If you go out to ACMoores you can buy shelves paint them yourself, when the paint dries rub sand paper over the paint to rough them up and make them look really old, or you can get barn wood, or make them out of crates. It sounds like fun..................

That's a great idea. I have a few of the books I had as a child displayed on an antique wooden school desk. I also have a few older toys in the mix as well.

I will check that out. Thanks, Peacefrog.

No, just children's books in general, I guess. To include my favorites. Maybe I'm thinking too big. Something a bit more modest sounds better. Like a smaller, wall mounted shelf with 20 books, maybe?

Instead of Sesame Street stuff, I was thinking more along the lines of literature, like...

Plus, James and the Giant Peach.

50/50. Being an old guy it wouldn't bother me. but when I was younger if I would have met some lovely young lady and things progressed to the point of me being invited to her house. If I saw the books
a couple of options would have ran through my mind (back then of course) 1) this chick really has a cool collection of kids books that she probably saved from when she read them as a child 2) this chick really wants to have kids! 3) Really hot NERD

Let the "oh what a pig" bashing begin! Now that is not how I think today. Being old, married and kids of my own. I would find it pretty cool. i actually have a thing for kids books now

If you like the idea hun, do it. It's your place. We have a more "hippie" thing goin on here. Nothing matches, beads in the doorway,my hex sign collection on the walls, and you should see the bedroom! laugh.gif tongue.gif
Do what you want. Never mind other people. Are trying to give the impression that you live in a model home? blink.gif wink.gif

I would probably think all three.. but number 2 would be of little concern because number 1 is just too cool, and a hot nerdy chick would be the perfect match for me so number 3 would be a dream come true.

A model home? laugh.gif No way. I just have this bare wall in my living room that needs something on it. I'd rather have something different there, you know, rather than your everyday knickknacks and boring pictures.

It would only freak out the guys you wouldn't really want to be with...so collect the books and reap the added benefit of being able to say, "Would you like to come in and see my classic children's book collection?" biggrin.gif

laugh.gif I wouldn't bash you for being honest, Samy. I asked for opinions.

I'm not the type that rotates numerous men through my house, in fact I'm going steady right now. happy.gif But hell yes, I am a nerd and I have no shame. cool.gif

Thanks for the insight, Samy. You know you can be candid with me. wink.gif biggrin.gif

Everyone keeps referencing what single men would think. I just meant people in general, not just potential suitors. smile.gif
samy0
people in general would like it. I think it would be a great conversation starter. I am just giving you the single, hoping this might turn into something, testosterone pulsing dude view.

if your going steady right now. have you asked him? and have you told him to build you some damn shelves already laugh.gif

No, I do not value his opinion on interior decoration. He thinks I should hang my Terps blanket on the wall.

Many people collect different things in life. It's what makes us unique.
Remember when people was fussing over the Cabbage Patch Dolls, Barney and the Beanie Babys?

I also collect books, the home improvement books, handyman magazine, This Old House.
But of course I never know when I might have to fix something. I hate paying someone to do something for me. When I can do it myself.

I need a house built, think you can help me out? laugh.gif

I'm not dating, people. I just meant "what do you think" in general. This would include my grandma, the 16 year old pizza girl, the religious people that want to talk to me about god, the Sears guy that fixed my dishwasher, the mice that live here too, etc.
