I am booting an XP computer using a Knoppix CD and can't seem to mount the hard drive as read write. It is read only and I tried: mount -o rw/dev/sda1 /mnt/sda1 but it did not work I substituted hda1 for sda1 and it still did not work.

Any ideas?

It doesn't list drives you can mount in Knoppix once you booted? It has been awhile since I have played with it.

All drives are listed and mounted as ro (read only) I can make a thumbdrive rw but not any NTFS drives.

I didn't think most flavors of Linux could read NTFS partitions yet? I always had a spare partition running FAT32 to store the info on for different OS's to read.

I have been reading that NTFS read is supported but am seeing conflicting info on NTFS read support.

I have no problem reading data from NTFS drives, I just want to be able to wipe free space on an NTFS drive. The instructions I have do not work. I plan to try it on a few other systems tomorrow.

Great site, but still more conflicting info. I'll spend some time tomorrow going through it and see if I can find anything definitive.
Thanks Idiot (man I love saying that!) tongue.gif

Uh-oh....CPD's hard drive won't mount, and Wrangler hasn't played with his in a while. That's all I got out of this whole thread. ohmy.gif blink.gif

Ok, I'll stop being off topic now...maybe....

Partition magic some space and convert to fat32. wink.gif

Make sure you have the important info backed up incase you get it to work and it corrupts your NTFS partition. I learned the hard way and that kinda turned me off to linux. I had to low level format the drive to make it usable again.

No Thanks, NTFS to FAT is not a good idea. All I want to do is find an easy (free) way to wipe free space.

i have tried captive-install-ntfs but I do not know where to look for the driver. If I can find it, mount -t captive-ntfs -o rw /dev/sda2 /media/sda2 should work

From what I read that doesnt work when SP2 is installed. unless they updated the software. You are really trying to get me to install linux again arent ya? lol

This really sucks. The linux boot cd I am using has AV software and password hacking software, both of which need to write to the drive. I am trying the captive-install-ntfs, but the system hangs after a few minutes of searching (out of memory I think). mad.gif

Well since ya dont like FAT32 you better run out and by some DIMM's LOL

Does 5.1 still fit on a CD or does it take a DVD now??

ohmy.gif Not on my wages!

I am using a Knoppix variation that fits on a CD.

I think I may have found the problem.

1. Linux weenies are weenies. It is the reason Linux will never be mainstream. They ALWAYS leave out important steps in their step by step instructions.

2. I ran the captive-install-acquire and stopped it manually after it showed that it had found the drivers.

3. I mounted the drive as read/write

4. Then cd to the NTFS partition (see #1.)

5. Then ran dd if=/dev/zero > /media/hda2/fileallconsuming

It appears to be working (very slowly). I'll see what happens

Oh no!!!! No more Windows XP!!!! laugh.gif

I tried 5.1 but it wont let me connect to the net. Oh well

It works, but is way too slow to be usable.

My experience is that you could not write to NTFS using LINUX. Read yes but write no. I imagine that is the way MS prefers it. I thought you had to create a new partition not NTFS.
