Yes, I'm just full of questions. Trying to get a feel for the people that live here.
Alot of people yell about taxes, road, developers, city council, mayor, police, and even how the county is run, etc. Just seems to me, that not alot of people like either living in Hagerstown or even how it's run. So why stay? I ask
Do the Mayor actually listens to the people of Hagerstown, I think not.
Do the City Council members listens to the people of Hagerstown, I think not.
Your all complaints seem to fall on deaf ears. Will things, ever change for the better. I think not.
We can only hope that the next election, will bring people in office that are for the people of Hagerstown.

I grew up in Hagerstown, elementary, junior high, high school, junior college. Moved away for 2 decades for a job in a big city. As soon as I retired, and as soon as I could I moved back to my hometown.
How are ya gonna keep 'em down on the farm after they've seen Paris? Well, I've seen Paris, both figuratively and literally... and I came back to the farm.
It's a shame at how much has changed in Hagerstown since the sixties... but that's progress I guess.
But I still like it, maybe not as much as I once did.. but it's better than a lot of places I've been.
There are still places around town where people still throw up their hand to you, to wave "hi", rather than their middle finger. There are still strangers that will engage in conversation with you while you're standing in line. There are still folks around that will offer a hand when they see you struggling with something.
All things considered, it's not a bad place to be.

I came here 3 years ago for 1 reason. To get my degree. Well now I have it and I'll be gone with the first job offer. The schools are bad, taxes dollars are not well spent, lack of activites and attractions for my taste, and I have meet very few people who share my interests and values. I have seen improvements and change is coming, I hope the city can handle it and make the right (long term) decisions.
This town has a lot to offer, but just not to me. I have lived in a new 10 towns in 15 years, they all have given me something to bitch about. I must say, that I have felt most out of place here in Hagerstown.
I got what I wanted, an education and a great investment (my house).
All I can say is if you see something here you like, get involved and make it happen, make it better.

Personally I like Hagerstown so far. I love the street I'm live on. It's quite, people aren't rude, nosey a bit.
I use to live here about 20 years ago or so. I like it then and I still like it now. What bought me up here two years age. I had the chance to buy a house, properties are alot cheaper then Frederick County.
You all do have a nice library though. It's big.

Most of that was when I was renting and I also switch jobs 2 times(promotions). This is the second house I bought and I lived in the last one 5 years. It still might be me.

Everyone has something they don't like about their town.

Hagerstown is a lot better than other places I've lived...
PG County was the worst. Doesn't matter what town or city you're in, it's still PG County!
Montgomery County...way too expensive and like PG County, you're way to close to DC.
Frederick used to be really nice, and still isn't too bad, but it's turning into Montgomery County. Too expensive, too much traffic, etc.
I've never been fond of living in a city, but if I have to, Hagerstown isn't all that bad.

I still don't understand what the big deal is with this. You and I have discussed this type of thing before, Yoss. Remember, you said how you offered your new neighbor a beer or something? Not everyone is sociable.
When a stranger starts talking to me in a line somewhere, I try to be nice and smile, etc., but all I'm thinking is, "why are you talking to me like I know you?

"
Some people are just introverts. Maybe this type of personality is perceived as snobby or applied to "outsiders" incorrectly.
Some of us just enjoy existing in our own little worlds with minimal outside intrusion.

I came back to Washington County from Florida because I got a job offer that I could not turn down. Not to mention, my friends and family being here. I stay here because of my ties with my friends and family, but if they were gone, I would be too.
I live in Hagerstown because I got a good deal on my house, but I'll be moving back into the county within the next couple of years or sooner... depending on what happens with real estate.

Heather- I'm one of those people who talk to anyone!

Can't help it. Whats the point in standing there with your thumb up your a$$,when you could be talking to someone who could turn out to be pretty interesting?! Bet you don't look at people in an elevator either huh?

I know you are! You have a bubbly personality that spills over into other people.

It's not that I dislike that personality, it's just that I'm in my own little world...not thumbing my butt, necessarily, but probably running through lists of stuff to do in my head, thinking about what to have for dinner, daydreaming, etc.
People in the elevator? Yeah, I'll give a quick, acknowledging, sideways glance and a small, polite smile. I don't ever practice my personality to be rude on purpose, I just am the way I am naturally.
I'm just saying, if someone doesn't react to you as enthusiastic as you did to them, doesn't mean they're being rude. This reminds me of a discussion I had recently about birth order and being an only child, etc.
Nevermind. I'll stop hijacking this thread now.

I don't wave at anyone unless they wave first, unless they're driving a Wrangler. When driving, I am no longer as courteous, letting someone in front of me or turn before me because they rarely thank me.
I no longer show as much respect for senior citizens because they only ever glare at me like I just stole their social security check, so I treat them like I would treat any other jackass, however I always get the door for a woman regardless of age.
New neighbor moved in a few weeks ago... I was getting out of my Jeep and I said hello and waved and he just looked at me like I was speaking a foreign language... so a big F U goes out to them.

There are lots of reasons I like this area:
6. The air smells clean--even when it smells like s***. I just spent 2 days in Philly. That city smells like a sewer.
5. If zombies come, odds are good my neighbor has a gun and will help watch my back.
4. If Ruskies invade (i.e. "Red Dawn"), odds are good my neighbor has a gun and will help watch my back.
3. My neighbors are nice enough and decent enough people that if any of the above scenarios happen, I'll get my gun and help watch their backs.
2. In the town in which I live, (which, admittedly, is not H-town), I've never experienced any type of bigotry or prejudice because of my race, age, gender, etc. The folks here are just nice, without being overly friendly (you'd like it, Heather).
And the #1 reason I like this area...
1. My friends and family all live within a 10-mile radius.

I remember when the employees at Blockbuster started that thing where they say hello to everyone that walks through the door. It took me awhile to catch on that they were saying it to everyone. Der.
So, do you just say hello or wave to random people? How do you choose which ones you'll wave to?
I was sweeping grass clippings off my driveway this evening and got too close to the road. Next thing I know, I look up and there's a neighbor walking right by me.

He said hello and I told him to stick it.

Yes, if people are looking my way, I wave. I'll say Hello, how you doing? Nothing wrong with that.
But that's just the way I am. I guess that's why, I get the strange looks. But I keep doing it though.
I like to treat people as I want to be treated. That's all it is too it.
I even wave at my neighbors, even though I don't know alot of them. Maybe the kindness will rub off.
You don't have to be best friends to everybody. That's not possible. But you can be respectfull of your neighbors. Even though they might not be respectfull back. Why let that get you down?
I don't choose, who I wave too, I don't choose, who I say Hello too, it just come natural. I'm not any better then anyone else. I'm just me.

I don't think I'll be living in Hagerstown much longer. I was a great supporter of Hagerstown city when I lived on the east side, near the Fairgrounds Park. It was a terrific neighborhood, and I'd run with my dog at the park. When I moved to the west side, I had a positive attitude and thought it would be just as great. No such luck! Although the building I'm in has been totally renovated and well taken care of by my landlord, and my neighbors in the building are great, I've change my opinion about the neighborhood I'm now in.
Since the weather turned warm, there are young punks hanging around on the corners and being very loud late at night. My apartment was broken into a few weeks ago, and now I've learned from a reliable source that the people in the building next door are running a crack house. The traffic in and out of there at all hours is crazy, and they often cut through our yard to get over there.
In addition to all that, I'm not real happy with the city towing my car. $90.00 for the tow and even more than that for the storage fee while I was out of town, and unaware that it was even towed.
I'll still visit H-town, but I'm not going to live there again!

I like h-town b/c I can be anywhere in town in less than 20 minutes, including my job and my hubby's job. The schools are lame, but that's why we're going private this year. The people on the whole are friendly and nice and helpful and normal. The price is right on most things as compared to life in Chicago and LA...thinking insurance rates, taxes, general cost of living. It's small enough that I run into people I know when I'm out, but not so small that I know everyone I run into when I'm out. The friends I have here I wouldn't trade for the world. It's close enough to DC and Balto that if I want city things, I can get there easily. After my trip to Indiana, there is only one place I would rather live (in a normal way, not a dream life, rich & famous way) and that would be Lafayette, IN. Nice sized city, an hour to Indy for sports, zoos, museums, shopping, nightlife, 3 hours to Chicago for really cool things, family nearby, an amazing university, and the schools are great, too, with all the profs' children in them! Hagerstown will never be that, so I'm not expecting it to be. I have complaints, sure, but no place is a true utopia.
