About 2 years ago, I got heavy into Netflix. I hadn't rented movies in years and went crazy in my first year of Netflix to the tune of 8-12 rentals/month on the 3 at a time plan. Then they started "throttling" my rentals. What used to be a 2 day turnaround time became a 4 (or more) day time to get a new movie. Between that and me running out of movies that interested me, I put my account on hold last summer. I started it up again in the fall, but ended up cancelling for good within a couple of months.
I don't have cable and I prefer to watch what I want, when I want. Going to the video store became a hassle with rushing the movies back, worrying about late fees, they never have the older stuff that I've always wanted to see, they don't have obscure movies that are hard to find and I was just tired of wandering around in the video store and not seeing anything I wanted to watch. They just shove whatever gets hyped down your throat.
So Netflix seemed like the perfect alternative. I'm going through exactly what SMan went through right now. I got an account awhile back and have gone crazy with it. I upped my plan to four at a time. When I finish a movie and send it back, they send me another one when they receive the one I just sent.
Initially, it's very fast and very impressive. As soon as you send movies back they send you more. But after awhile they will throttle you. They make less money off people that send the movies back quickly. Just like SMan said, they start getting slower at sending your next movie. So it's not "unlimited" as advertised. If you keep sending your movies back the day after you receive them, they'll catch on and take longer to send your next movie.
The postage is paid by them, so you don't have to worry about that. I currently have two movies listed on my account as lost even though I sent both back. They understand that they get lost in the mail, but they do keep track and if you continually report lost movies, they'll suspend your account. They don't make you pay for the lost ones though.
If the DVD comes scratched, damaged or unplayable, you just send it back and they send a replacement.
As far as being cost worthy...it depends on which plan you pick and how many movies you watch. Being a movie buff, it's worth it to me, even when they throttle my activity. Since there are no due dates or late fees, I can my time watching them. Since I don't have cable, I can pop in a movie and watch 30 minutes here and there for a couple of days and then pass it on to a friend to watch and they just have to pop it in the mail when they're through.
It's just so easy and convenient. I highly recommend it. If I had regular TV with cable, I'd probably be heading for burn out like SMan did. But since the only TV channels I get are NBC 25 and MPT, I rely heavily on having movies here.
You can always just try it out for a month or so to decide if you like it and cancel if you don't. If you come on board with Netflix, you have to be added to my friends account. I love seeing what everybody else is watching too.
