OK... some of us here might actually have $5,000 in free-for-all cash. LOL (I, however, am not one of them.)
That said, you have to spend that $5,000 on something indulgent for yourself. It can't be anything you need. Can't be bills, loan payments, charity donations, clothes for your kids, mortgage payment or anything like that. And it must be a tangible item (no 'experiences' like vacations).
So... what would you buy?

An above ground pool

I would buy a new sectional couch since the new puppy dog (one hundred pounder) chewed up ours and is now being held together by duck tape....green duck tape at that! I didn't do it! It does go well with our "lived in" look. But the couch is something like 20 yrs old anyway. But, I would have to store the new couch for awhile until baby darling gets over his chewing stage!!
I'd get a new kitchen table and chairs, too, since what we have is probably 15 yrs. old. (Oh darn, wait, he'd probably chew that to pieces too!)
Ok, so I have some money still left over.....hmmmm,
Ok, now I know... new big screen tv and new flat screen computer. That ought to do it!
Peacefrog, what would you buy?

6 years ago I bought a 24' round above ground for $600.00. It was a discontinued model, so it was on sale. That included the filter, pump, everything! We set it up ourselves. So I figure with $5,000 I could go the same route getting it on sale and use the rest of the money for installation.

A combination of two of the following three: a new hdtv, a gas fireplace, new counter tops. The first would be completely frivolous and the second two are going to be bought in the near future even if nobody will give me $5K.

I would remodel my bathroom, I remodel everything else myself but that. Guess I'll get around to it sooner or later. Maybe next year, were see. With the money I save by doing it myself. I'll have extra money to go out on.

After the XBox 360 fiasco, I'd have to say this sounds like a great idea!!!
Coincidentally my son was just talking to a guy who works at one of the game stores this evening abut the PS3's. He was told that they were only gong to make a million (or 2 can't remember), and that each store that will be selling them wil only get 2 each. So this makes this idea even more appealing!! We will be seeing lots of those on ebay I guarantee you!!

I used to love fountain pens. I remember the ones with the ink filled cartridge that you put in the pen, Shaeffer I think make them. But my Dad had an old time fountain pen that you stuck into an ink bottle and pulled a little lever to draw the ink up into the reservoir. I remember he used to use it to write his checks with.
Heck, I bet a lot of the folks here don't even know what a fountain pen is, much less used one.
Sorry for the off topic.....
