- Bought Hartz 4 in 1 Flea & Tick Drops Plus and applied them just like you would with Frontline a few weeks ago
- in the following days, I noticed an elevated stress level in my dog but didn't really think much of it
- took him to PetSmart for his grooming today

When I returned, a strip of hair was missing down his back and it looks like his skin was literally seared. It had already begun healing and scabbing up but the damage was already done. Needless to say, I was upset about it and taking him to the vet tomorrow even though he is acting perfectly normal and looks like the skin is healing up.

Tonight I contacted Hartz via email, and plan to via phone and written complaint as well. I also found this site called HartzVictims.org. Upon reading that, I was furious. My dog is not sensitive to pesticides or other medications, and has never had a problem with Frontline before... I only tried the Hartz product because it was cheaper. Needless to say, I will never buy another Hartz product again.

Just wanted to post a warning here to other pet lovers. This product has KILLED people's pets (just read the stories and look at the pics on the site I posted). I strongly urge you to NOT use this product.

I plan on taking pics tomorrow with my digital camera (left it at work).

Again, the site is www.hartzvictims.org

OMG! That is some scary stuff on that site. I have never used hartz products thankfully. But i'll make sure i tell every pet owner i know not to use them either

Sorry about your dog. I have been hearing stories like this for a few years now and thought the problem had been taken care of, apparently not. I decided years ago to never buy Hartz products.

Keep us informed of the progress.

Hope your dog is okay. Those pics were awful. BTW, I still use a flea & tick collar on my critter, and every time we go to the vet, they are pushing those drops!!!

we have been using frontline for years and have never had a flea or tick problem. just dont buy it from your vet. You can get it online at several different supply places MUCH MUCH cheaper. i think we use petmeds.com but i'll have to check with the wife

Thanks for the comments. smile.gif

I have a vet appt tomorrow afternoon. I think that as far as his health is concerned he is okay, but I'm taking him just for peace of mind.

Someone from Hartz contacted me and had some questions. I didn't scream at her or anything, just gave her the info she wanted. They want the vet to supply them with a written diagnostics of everything and they said they will reimburse me, but I wasn't sure if they were talking about the product or the vet visit or both. I'll deal with that when it comes time.

Anyway, I'm still angry about it, especially after seeing that it is apparently a common problem (one my vet was well aware of when I talked to her this morning).

Yeah... my vet warned us against Hartz and said to avoid their products.

Hope your pooch feels better soon!

We had put a Hartz flea and tick collar on our cat many years ago all the hair fell out around his neck. Image having an all black cat with a hairless ring around its neck, pretty funny looking. Our cat was fine and we also took him to the vet and remember her saying something to the effect that she sees cases like that frequently and not to worry just dont use Hartz anymore. It was the collar type and not the drops but it must be something that Hartz uses in all its flea and tick products. We just gave him a bath and in time all the hair grew back. Hope your dog feels better.

Sorry for ya dawg... sad.gif

the carp you can buy at stores is 3X weaker than frontline.

never had a problem...'cause I have only used frontline
Heather
My parents and I have only ever used Frontline as well. Never had a problem. My grandmother used miscellaneous cheap stuff, (powders, collars, meds), from WalMart and her cats lost hair also, had open sores, scabs, etc.

I hope your baby gets better soon. Sounds like he'll be alright soon enough. smile.gif

frontline > *.*

THAT IS ALL

Went to the vet yesterday. He has a bacterial infection which was a direct result of using the Hartz stuff. She's getting me a diagnostics report so that I can pass it on to Hartz. He will be fine, but the hair that is missing may or may not grow back, depending on the damage done to the hair follicles. She gave him some antibiotics and steroids to help the healing go faster.
Naomi
I SMELL A LAWSUIT!!!

At the very least, I'd insist on getting reimburst for the vet bills.

I've used http://www.calvetsupply.com/ for a few years now. They seem to have the best deals on Frontline around. And you don't need an Rx.

If your ever looking for dog beds this place is pretty cool.

http://www.dogbedworks.com/index.cfm I'm getting one of these for my pooch

I think that's because they are safe on humans and are only known to harm animals. tongue.gif tongue.gif tongue.gif

Welcome Back!

Coma,

hows the pooch doing? Any word back from Hurtz..I mean Hartz?
coma
He's doing good. Looks like everything is healing, just a little slow. I've found that putting the pills in peanut butter works well. smile.gif

I have to call the vet on Monday to find out where things are at. There was a lot of medical jargon and information sharing going on so instead of me being the messenger, they (my vet and Hartz) were going to swap information directly.

I'm pretty sure I'll get reimbursed for the product and vet visit, but my main concern is that product remains on shelves.

Not sure if anyone does this. I also treat my yard, on top of a flea treatment for my dog. Worked pretty good.

you know that wash from your yard to a small stream then to a creek then to the Potomac river then the Chesapeake Bay... sad.gif

So your fish, oysters and crabs will be flea free

Do you know of something that isn't harmful to the water, that I could use for my yard? I only treat my yard, one time per year. I'm sure factory put in more polution, then I ever could in a life time.

As long as my crabs don't get crabs, i'm ok with that.

Back when I was a Golf Course manager, we were beginning to use alot of biological controls for diseases and insects. A quick Google seach found this for Fleas.

They are typcally not as effective as chemical control but definitely worth a try.
