I wasn't exactly sure where to put this. So I apologize in advance if I posted in the wrong section.

Anyway...I'm here to tell you about an organization in the community that you may not be aware of. It's called Job's Daughters International.

We are an organization for young women between the ages of 10-20. We learn important skills for life such as leadership, organization, teamwork, self reliance, public speaking, and the fundamentals of parliamentary procedure.

Job's Daughters teaches its members friendship and respect for other people and cultures. We have over 20,000 members in Canada, Australia, the Philippines, Brazil and the United States. Members of Job's Daughters have the opportunity to travel and meet girls from other regions. Additionally, we honor a rich tradition and heritage that has been a part of Job's Daughters since 1920.

Throughout the year, we plan and share a lot of fun activities. Arts and crafts, photography, sewing, and creative writing are just a few of the activities we enjoy. Girls also participate in sports including soccer, softball, volleyball, swimming and bowling, and we like to sing and dance, too! Last weekend, we went to the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire. And this summer we went to Six Flags and a dinner theatre to see "Fiddler on the Roof." Many of our local groups have competitions with awards and recognition for outstanding achievement.

We also play an important role in serving the community - such as visiting hospitals and homes for the elderly to offer friendship to people who might be lonely and sad. We also have food drives and other activities to provide for the less fortunate. Our charity, the Hearing Impaired Kid's Endowment (The HIKE Fund), provide hearing assistive devices for children in need. Our popular "hikes for HIKE," provide a special charitable service to our community. And our work with hearing-impaired children has led many of our groups to learn sign language. We are proud to be "kids helping kids!" Job's Daughters also support and contribute to other charities.

Education is very important in Job's Daughters. None of our activities should interfere with schoolwork or home responsibilities. Each year the organization awards scholarships at the international and regional level to help deserving girls achieve their educational goals.

Now, I understand that the majority of people on this message board aren't between the ages of 10-20, but if you have any daughters, nieces, sisters, friends, etc. who may be interested in joining such a wonderful organization, please feel free to contact us!

The Mummer's Parade is quickly approaching and it is a perfect time to check out our organization. During the parade, we will be at the Hagerstown Masonic Temple which is located at 54 S. Potomac St. If you aren't exactly sure where that is, it's near the library, specifically, beside the Schmankerl Stube Bavarian Restaurant. At the parade, we will be selling chairs outside. We will also be serving free refreshments inside. So please stop by!

If you are interested in the group, but are unable to stop by during the Mummer's Parade, don't hesitate to e-mail me about any questions you may have about Job's Daughters.

I thought that organizations associated with the Masonic Order were not supposed to solicit members?

So, even the ladies have to keep secrets!! That must be tough.

And why do these groups need to be secretive anyway? Nuts, if you ask me.

Re: Leadership/Community Outreach Groups for young womwn:

My daughter is 20. There are a lot groups girls can join for free and that are very transparent/easily assessed. Basically, there are a lot of choices out there that are easily researched. Parents of young women want to know who is connected to certain groups, or are their any undisclosed agendas or set religous/social dictates. Groups with a broad range of particpants, with clear goals and structures just feel more comfortable.

I have heard that Job's daughters does sponsor college scholorships so that is a positive, just do not know any specifics about the goup. I have just not crossed its path in everday activities. So, it is totally off my radar.

By the way, a great group my daughter particpates with for community action/understanding govt and giving back to the community is the City of Hagerstown's Neighbohoods 1st (community outreach), along with the Neighborhood College (study of city operations/resources). Check out city website. Easy to assess/access. FREE

LOL LOL LOL

One ancient comment/inquiry made a year ago about the building committee, still has some residual affect. LOL

I was just mentioning I had not really ever heard of some of the other groups, like JOB'S Daughters. It is off my radar, thus I have no comment on them.

(I am actuallly the one staying on topic so I am improving. I was not discussing ... what was that... the building group?..) smile.gif
