For a party that is so confident: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/15538278/from/RS.5/

Now, let me say it before someone else does: If the shoe were on the other foot, I'm sure the Republicans would be crying foul also.

Someone will need to explain to me how requiring an ID is surpressing voters? Sheez, MOST are providing the ID's FREE?!?! Get up off your butt and go get one if you wish to be a part of the process.

Now come next Wednseday, if the Dems happen to take one or both houses, do you think we will hear one word from there about this "supposed" problem? rolleyes.gif NO!

We will however hear, the Republicans, crying foul in some form or another. It sadly is part of the political process since, Al (edited) Gore contested Florida.

Personally, I love automation, but am skeptical of how secure the Electronic machines are. Give me back my pen and paper, I can color in the circles and have no one to blame but myself.
tagout
you are so right about that, paper and pen is the only way.
Snoopy
No ID no vote, I say.
Udmas
Snoopy, I couldn't agree more.

When I first started voting, decades ago, I was struck I needed no ID. Probally because when writing a check, I needed an ID and credit card. At 18 I did not have a credit card back in the day. To get a library card or to go to school each time my family was transferred, I had to provide proof of idenity and/or proof of residency.

Yet when I voted I went up to a nice woman at a table and spelled out my name and that was it, she read off my street address and said, "Is that correct?" I voted. So I have never gotten the big deal with people not recognizing the need for an ID to vote.

Lord knows, when we transferred and I switched schools as a youngster, my parents had to drag in a load of verification/records. It seems easier today. I am all for equal access to US citizens. I support the need to be vigilent that we do not descriminate. I think we are now experienced enough to demand an ID to vote while not turning away citizens due to their ethnic, religous, or social background. We can develop a protocol to ensure rights, while demanding ID.

How did your name get on the list?

Didn't you have to register to vote for your name to get on that list?

Weren't there ID's involved when you signed up the first time?

If the problem is an imposter trying to replace a registered voter on the rolls, than an ID would be useful but has that been a big problem?

It seems that the call for picture ID's is connected to the idea that illegals ( or others ineligible to vote) are somehow just walking in the door of polling places and voting.

But where I vote (and no I will not reveal the local) the election judge hands the voter a small form that has to be signed right there along with filling out an address. The election judge compares the signature (which was signed right in front of the judge) with the signature in the election judges book (which is the one I used when I registered) and if it matches you get a ballot. It's not a new process since it's been that way ever since I've been 18 and was about eight presidential elections ago.

What good is a picture ID that can be faked and the photo made to match whoever is presenting it ?

If the problem is the actual registration process of signing up to become a voter than that's the area that needs to be addressed.
Snoopy
Signatures are hard to match -- today's picture IDs are much harder to fake/alter.

Requiring ID to vote is one small step we need to take in getting illegals outta here. After the election I will be pushing whomever is elected again on that.

I agree. We're even experienced enough to give people a paper verification of who they voted for. The Diebold machine at my bank hasn't failed to give me a receipt in over 20 years, nor have the thousands of gas pumps I've used. What's the big f--king deal?

A guy in Allentown, PA today walked into his polling place and demolished a touch screen voting machine.

He's an Indepedent who thinks that electronic voting is being manipulated by Republicans.

What caught my eye about the story is that he DID show his ID when he came in to vote.

I guess requiring an ID doesn't weed out all the bad apples. laugh.gif laugh.gif

Another debate about a no brainer! Luckily everyone seems to be in agreement its a no brainer.

"Didn't you have to register to vote for your name to get on that list? Weren't there ID's involved when you signed up the first time?"

Don't know about anyone else but when I registered during my senior year of high school... NO, no I.D. was needed. Just told them who I was and where I lived. Now I have no idea if the election board verifies the info before final approval is granted but I do know it wasn't required (back then) to fill out the card. Speaking of which, wouldn't it solve the whole issue if voter cards had photos????????
SMan
South Carolina's governor got turned away from voting because he forgot his ID. OOPS!

Well I am certainly sad today. I guess Id and his ilk got their way in many cases.

I think it was the result of several things: Republican weakness on the border/immigration issues, excess Federal spending under R leadership, a rampant media bias in favor of Dems/libs, historic midterm election trends, and a lack of deep thought by many Americans for starters.

I think as a result our taxes will rise, the stock market and economy will cool off, and we will be less safe. I think the radical Islamists see this as a victory for them and their methods and I think they will be emboldened everywhere. And I hope I am wrong on every count.

My God, an admitted socialist won a US senate seat by a landslide in Vermont. Is Vermont part of this country???? blink.gif ohmy.gif

Oh yeah, another thing: very soon there will be more gun control legislation brought out by the Dems, with no increased effort to enforce existing laws. mad.gif

Of course, I guess it's o.k. to wave around a 2 billion surplus of taxpayers money, not putting it back in their pockets and surely not spending it on essential public safety for our correctional facilities....go figure? But hey, who really thinks there are rainy days anyway, right?

I don't know about you, but my tax bill, not to mention other fees such as health costs have been on a one way elevator for a few years now, and there must be some kid on it pushing every button to make sure we stop and pay on each floor. And the stock market has been REALLY cool to a lot of people, just ask Martha Stewart or old Ken Lay. Of course, I guess its good if you own stock in Halliburton, after all it makes sense to charge 4times the cost for meals to our military rathe than supply them with the necessary gear...huh?

The problem is you're probably reading this right now and thinking this is all a bash on republicans, but notice I didn't use either parties name. So blame who you want, that's why we vote, right?

They are not dumb enough to send them id. However, I see terrorism rising due to the Democrats relaxing some very effective controls, thus allowing the bad guys to enter into the country undetected. Sorry id, you know as well as any (I think) the Democrats are GENERALLY not as strong on National Security as the Republicans.

My big fear is the amount of future raises the military will receive, and the benefits. I see them heading further into the tank. The Republicans have been skimping lately and the Democrats are going to be looking for every penny they can take and turn into Welfare benefits for the poor, lazy slobs who just put them into office.

The Democrats are going to be looking at every penny to get the deficit reduced. If there aren't any future raises for the military it's going to be that the money has been spent in Iraq. The Republicans spent your military benefits on the war in Iraq but since you feel that is a part of the war on terror you should view it as money well spent.

You want raises for the military but you gripe about possible tax increases.

Kid, I voted for you, don't make me regret it before you're even sworn-in.

The stock market has been great to virtually anyone in the market, period. A record high is not suitable for you, huh? Not for most of the media either. Until dems are in control in the WH, then, if it holds, they'll take the credit.

ID -- you may not admit it buy you know that the terrorists enjoyed seeing dems retake control. And that new Dem sponsored gun control laws will come, I guarantee it.

Monk -- you are funny. No party will look at every penny to reduce the deficit. Way too much pork on both sides. If the Dems want respect let them start by cancelling all their BS pork projects and funnel the money to the military regulars.

Just for you:

I'm just trying to be a father,
Raise a daughter and a son,
Be a lover to their mother,
Everything to everyone.
Up and at 'em bright and early,
I'm all business in my suit,
Yeah, I'm dressed for success from my head down to my boots,
I don't do it for money, there's still bills that I can't pay,
I don't do it for the glory, I just do it anyway,
Providing for our future's my responsibility,
Yeah I'm real good under pressure, being all that I can be,
And I can't call in sick on Mondays when the weekends been to strong,
I just work straight through the holidays,
And sometimes all night long.
You can bet that I stand ready when the wolf growls at the door,
Hey, I'm solid, hey I'm steady, hey I'm true down to the core,
And I will always do my duty, no matter what the price,
I've counted up the cost, I know the sacrafice,
Oh, and I don't want to die for you,
But if dyin's asked of me,
I'll bear that cross with an honor,
'Cause freedom don't come free.
I'm an american soldier, an american,
Beside my brothers and my sisters I will proudly take a stand,
When liberty's in jeopardy I will always do what's right,
I'm out here on the front lines, sleep in peace tonight.
American soldier, I'm an American,
An American,
An American Soldier

You're right about the stock market though, I'll give you that much. But if I'm gonna give the credit for it to Bush then I also have to give Clinton credit for a lot of years back in the 90s. That's ok with me, but personally I don't think either one of them had much to do with it.

Totally wrong about the "crying foul" I haven't seen any recounts or lawsuits yet. Then instead of just saying

I've been voting in every election - National, state, local and municipal when I lived in a municipality - since 1976. When I went the first time and every time since until recently, all I did was tell them my name and party and say yes when they read my address.

Haven't you ever voted?????

I'm not at all offended at proving I.D. In this age when you have to show I.D. at WalMart who could possibly think there is anything wrong with it?

Sorry if I haven't read all the posts. I tried but too much seemed to be just plain arguing. The election was a hoot. We'll all know if it was good or bad in a year. Democracy is a living thing. Just like your body it responds to environmental factors and what you put into it. Just like any living thing it can get sick and die! All great societies have eventually decayed and faded from the top. In time ours will as well. Ten thousand years from now the archeologist's will tell us why!
