I'm considering getting my crooked air holes straightened out through surgery. My deviation hasn't caused me any major problems, but it would be nice to have my nasal passages flow freely.

Has anybody ever had a deviated septum fixed? I'm a big chicken when it comes to doctors. He told me I would be knocked out during the procedure and the surgery would be out-patient. I've never had so much as a broken bone or a stitch, so considering this elective procedure is an unusual event for me.

Do you live in a bubble? How can that be?

I think you should get the procedure done. It will make you feel more comfortable and it doesn't sound like that big a deal. Video it and post it here for us to watch.

One of my best friends had it done and he didn't have any complaints. The incredible drugs that they give you afterwords probably make it more worth it. tongue.gif

Go have a few beers and pick a fight. Voila! Nose fixed.

My theory about medical procedures is if it aint broke don't fix it.

If you do decide to have it done be sure to ask the surgeon and the facility what his infection rate is - If he gets offended or doesn't know - find another MD.

I too have never had any breaks or stitches. Knock on wood. Ouch!

Heather, don't burst my bubble.

Apparently, it's twisted enough inside of there that the first thing he asked is if I'd ever suffered any "trauma" to my nose.

I have a cute nose on the outside but screwed up on the inside. blink.gif

SMan, in all seriousness, my friend that had it was a wrestler in high school and college. His nose was majorly screwed up on the inside and it got to the point where he HAD to have this surgery. He was unconscious when they did it and he was so doped up the next few days he didn't feel much pain. A little soreness, but nothing real uncomfortable.

I have and in all honesty if you are not having problems you do not want to go through this. When I had mine it involved fixing it then having my nose stuffed with guaze to pack it off so I would not start bleeding. The orders then were given do not sneeze unless you keep your mouth open becuae if the packing blows out you can cause a major bleed. Then after about a week to 10 days they took out the packing which by that time had attached itself to healing incisions.

I would not do it again unless it is medically needed, which for me at the time was the case. I did not have a choice.

Thanks for the response, Tony.

I've got an appointment with my ENT doc later this month and I'm going to let him know that I'm gonna pass on the surgery for now. It just hasn't been that much of an issue for me.

I had the surgery done a few years ago. I wasn't aware of any direct symptoms either - I could still breathe out of each nostril, etc. The Nurse Practictioner said that's common. I had been getting sinus infections with every cold, it might have been adding to killer sinus headaches and extra loud snoring.

I had the surgery and afterwards it hurt - alot. They don't call it roto-router for nothing. I got cotton mouth from breathing through my nose for a few weeks. It was the first time I'd been given two perscriptions for pain - one for moderate and the other for serious. (Where's the one for agony?) Different doses of oxy-contin. I can understand how someone could get addicted to them. The drugs worked at dulling the pain and making me not care or forget. I've had surgery before (ear tubes and tonsils) and this one was tough. About the same as getting my wisdom teeth out. I saw stars when my 1 year old headbutted me by accident.

The good news. The horrible pain doesn't last forever and I haven't been getting sinus/ear infections as frequently.

It sounds like you are shying away from the surgery but you can always reconsider.

Apologies for the late post, I stumbled upon this thread while doing some research for my daughter's tubes.
