Since I read a lot of books, I usually have read whatever is being made into a movie long before the movie is released. Most of the books to movies, in my opinion, are better left as the printed word, but there are two that I'm anxious to see that will be released soon. My mind is pretty much made up on one, but I might just be fooled after reading Under the Tuscan Sun by Frances Mayes. From the reviews I've read, the story has been changed quite a bit, but I hope the spirit of the book remains intact. I loved it. The other one that I'm waiting anxiously to see what Hollywood has done with is Dennis LeHane's Mystic River.

I've never found a book to movie that was anything like the book. I concur with you most book to movies should be left in print.

For the most part I agree with you. The book is usually better than the movie. I too read a lot of books and have read many that latter became movies. I can only think of a couple that made much sense after the transition to the big screen.
Wurthering Heights with Ralph Fines and Juliette Binoche was very faithful to the book.
Interview with the Vampire, though different from the book, still captured the feel of the original. Good though it was, it could not overcome the terrible error of casting Tom Cruise as Lestat.

I was looking forward to seeing The Shipping News with Kevin Spacey, Julianne Moore, and Judy Dench but it must have been unsuccessful because I think it went straight to video. It was such a good book and the cast sounds great. How could they ruin it?

Many times I will see an interesting movie preview and then read the book, before I see the movie.

Another movie that didn't do the book justice was October Sky based on Rocket Boys by Homer Hickam. The movie was like a completely different story!
