So Sharpsburg has decided to do trick-or-treating a day early. Are other towns doing so, too? Where's the sense in that?
I mean, come on! Is the City government so anxious to throw their weight around that they have to play games with holidays?

I don't know what their reasoning is, but it may not be
such a bad idea for Berkeley County, seeing that there
is a big high school football game that night, with I
would guess lots of young drivers on the road at the
same time that kids are on the streets...

Wouldn't it seem better to keep it on a Friday, rather than on a school night.

When I first moved here, it was always on the Thursday night before Halloween. I think it may have more to do with keeping the older "trickers" a bit more under control since they would have to be in early for school the next day. Very surprised to see Hagerstown actually holding it on Friday. Of course WashCo. schools are out on the 31st anyway.

I didn't think about that, but I've never really encountered any Halloween vandals except for the occasanial pumpkin bashing. By the way why are Washington Co kids out for Halloween?

It IS a very solemn Wiccan holiday ya know!

It's the biggest one. It's the New Years of the religion. It's when they honor the dead.

Oh, my!
WVD is starting rumours of earthly religion worship in public schools. (not that there's anything wrong with that)
WVD, are you Wiccan?
It's a professional day WVUM, where the teachers get to f***-off for the day.

Hey, when I first moved here I was shocked they had Halloween on a different day of the week--I had never heard of such a thing. But then again we move all our holidays to Monday so we can have 3 day weekends, so what do you expect.
But since it is on Friday to begin with and it is a Prof. Day(see prior post for a more realistic label), why not have it on the correct day for once?

I've never understood the Professional Day concept, teachers don't need a whole day to put their grades together since they just type them into the computer.

Its another day the taxpayers can pay for which the teachers have 'seminars'(read fun/boredom depending on the speaker/subject). Why they cannot have them all before the school year starts is beyond me!! Instead they have to mess with the calender all the time..

I think that Halloween should be on Halloween just like Christmas is on Christmas and Easter is on Easter. I have seen different towns celebrate on different nights and this causes a lot of confusion. Why oh why can't things just be left alone!

Exactly, why not leave holidays on the day they're supposed to be on!

It just means all the kiddies can go from town to town and overload on goodies!

Hmmm . . .
It seems to me like, more than worrying about what DAY we all choose to do it, we ought to be consistent on a fairly wide area basis. For those of us who don't happen to live in any particular town that has stated their intentions, it would be nice if there was simply a date chosen for all of Washington County.

Well common sense would say that it would be on Oct 31, but I guess the gov't just wants to confuse all of us!

What ever happened to kids trick or treating on Halloween, no matter what day of the week it is? When I was growing up, we always went out on Halloween night, not a day before, or after. Hagerstown is also the only place I've ever seen where there are no fireworks actually on the 4th of July. THere are always plenty before hand, but never on the holiday. Next thing you'll know, Hagerstown residents will be celebrating CHristmas on Christmas Eve, and voting a day befor ethe rest of the country. But in all reality, let's face it, not everyone will be happy all of the time. Whether trick or treating is held on THursday, Friday, or even Saturday, I'm sure someoen would have a complaint. Let's just celebrate the holidays when the occur, and then there can be no hard feelings. If you want to blame someone, blame the government who set up these national holidays.

Fireworks are ON the 4th at the Fairgrounds.Concerts before and then the works!!!
And yes I remember those days too.No worries bout "stranger danger", or pins and poisons. No politically correct costumes.Or "structured" parties.Good natured tricks and vandlisms(soap and t.p.,shavin creme,etc.).Just a great chance to BE a kid.
