But you are correct Samy, most people do not know his music. I knew it, just did not like it..and chose not to remember it.. Sorta like George Micheal's music...I remember Wham! and thinking gosh, this dude is a Freddy Mercury--why are all these girls going nutso over him? Then his solo career took off and it was highly obvious what his 'taste' was...and yes, I do not particularly like his genre of music either..and most people do not know most of his songs either, such as "I want your sex"...
You have to give Prince, symbol whatever credit. It got him back in the public domain...
Someone once accused me of trying to turn this place into a Prince.org sleeper cell. My plan is coming along nicely.

You're killing me here, Tx.
You speak of Prince in the past tense. You knew his music, chose not to remember it. Prince didn't stop making music in the 80s. I have 25 Prince CDs and I still don't have his entire collection. Check out this discography I grabbed from some site:

You're making comments on back in the day. Which I understand...everyone does it. "I'm a big Prince fan." "Ohhh, I loved Purple Rain."
I deleted the "best of" collection CDs in the discography. People don't realize Prince hasn't left "the scene" because most people commenting on him 1) aren't big into music 2) dismiss him as too eccentric to bother with. Fact is, most people are aware of pop music, (popular). Not all of his work is popular and there's a reason for that.
He was signed into a contract with Warner Brothers who dismissed him as a creative artist and merely wanted a money machine to exploit. The corporate money making machine didn't jive with his love of creating music. They wanted to keep him in the mainstream to please the masses but he wanted creative freedom. Hence the "slave" written on his face and hence the name change to the symbol to break his contract. (Yeah, the symbol name is still weird and he could have chosen any other pseudonym including Jamie Starr, Alexander Nevermind, John Smith, etc.)
However, anyone that had an ear for good music or any fan that stayed with Prince would have recognized that even throughout the years where no one else knew his music, he was still making excellent music. He's well known for being a workaholic. (Hence the fleeting relationships with beautiful women. He's not NECESSARILY bisexual, however I do agree his music has heavy connotations of that, but rather it's his anal personality that hinders his relationships. He's a workaholic and damn it, he has high demands on how beautiful you should be ALL OF THE TIME.) When you are Prince's object of desire, you are his muse and the music reflects thusly.

I'm not done.
What is this sh!t about Wham?! Completely different genre, capability, god I could afix so many adjectives here. Prince and George Michael share the same realm of music rarely and when they do it's only the dancing, sexy, (see controversial), hits that just happen to collide at the right moment in culture. Fact is, most serious music critics have Prince at the top of any of their lists.
No, McGee, he's not THE GREATEST guitar god ever, but he's damn good at it. He also plays a dozen other instruments too. All of his albums are produced, written, composed and arranged by him. Hence the workaholic, again. And let me tell you, that's rare in this business. In this pop world where most "artists" coo and squeal and then call it day, (I just downloaded Britney I sh!t you not and I'm not hatin).
AND YET! And yet Prince recognizes that he can only create sub-par music for us on his own so he recruits a full legit BAND. He recruits great people at the top of their game to play all those instruments and those people fall over at the chance to work with him. They are touted as the tightest group whenever they play. Workaholic makes damn sure. Chock full of integrity it is, Ashlee Simpson caught in the headlights it aint.
Maybe you haven't heard of newer material because you aren't into jazz, instrumental concept albums, funk or his newest...the religion saturated stuff. I'm not into that kinda stuff either. To be honest, I'm a pop girl. I only hear what's on the radio, which isn't Prince, or what someone convinces me to listen to. I've just been a Prince fan all these years and kept up with what he puts out...whether it's crap or not.
And don't get me started on that. I know Prince put's out crap sometimes. You can put me in rabid fan category, but I'm his worse critic too. A friend of mine actually likes the lyrics, "makin love like surgery."

God. That's retarded.
I guess I should stop now. Y'all aren't gonna read it anyway. Just can't help but school ya on my sexy little man.

And for the record, I stopped wanting to marry Prince when I was nine. No attraction there except for admiration and easy sarcasm. I can easily laugh at him and myself too.
