Full Version: New Yellow Flag Rule

NASCAR implemented a new rule that stops drivers from racing back to the yellow flag. The field is frozen when the yellow flag flys and drivers cannot impove their position. Then the first car a lap down gets their lap back automatically.

Do you think this is good for NASCAR or does the rule need tweaked more?

It does need tweaking.

Number 1: In last weeks BGN race, the yellow flag flew as the cars
were completeing the last lap. No one slowed down....they all raced
back to the finish line because whoever got there first, won. The
impetus behind the rule was to get everyone to slow down and hold
their position so that track safety officials could get to any drivers
involved in accidents quickly...NASCAR officials are aware of this
problem and are trying to find additional technology they can use
to truly freeze the field at the moment the yellow lights come on.

Number 2: If they're going to give the first driver who is a lap
down his/her lap back, then they should have to restart immediately
in front of the car that was leading the race prior to the caution flag,
or the leader following pitstops. It would be the same as being the
last car on the lead lap. Then, even though you're back on the lead
lap, you still have to out-race the leaders to maintain your position
in the field. There are some races where only 4-5 cars finish on the
lead lap. I don't think it's fair to the cars who have remained on the
lead lap throughout the race to have to then compete with another
car that got this 'freebie'...

That's my take on it....

I totally agree on both counts 5car. I heard about the mess NASCAR had with the Busch race and trying to figure out what position everyone held when the caution flag flew at the end. They are talking about using GPS to freeze the field and see where everyone was at when the flag flew. I also agree with you on getting the lap back and alot of the drivers agree as well. They didn't like the idea of getting a free pass so I think NASCAR will tweak that and your idea sounds pretty good, that will at least make them fight to keep their lap.
