Hi, I was wondering what your opinions were as to the best place to work in the region based on your own experiences or even just what youve heard from others and knowledge of the companies. I used to work at Citicorp back in 97 to 99 and I enjoyed it there, except for so many that didnt work very hard but still got accolades due to their a*s kissing.

thats true it seems the harder you work and stick to that then most get intimidated but if you bow down to someone youll be fine, Anywayz I was thinking of applying at First Data, how is that place?
cfulmor
Well unless they have cleaned house, probably the same as Citi, since Citi used to own what is now First Data.

Re: First Data

Didn't they lay a bunch of people off within the last 6-12 months? Depending on the position, I would worry about the stability there.

I mostly only care about myself and a few other lucky people.

I don't know much about good places to work in the area because I've been with the same employer for awhile now. Like someone else said, UPS has always had a good reputation but you need to be a hard worker. Target warehouse maybe? What kind of work are you looking for?

Sometimes its usually jobs that pay the rent or bills...or both. biggrin.gif
But it works.
AS for me...show biz.

Best Places To Work, well that's a interesting question. But to answer that question, you would have to answer a few.

What is your job experience? What experience do you have as far a work? How much money, was you looking to make per hour? What line of work are you looking to get into? Like do you want a sit down job, or hard labor job?

Careers that provide an adequate income for families in Washington County usually require a commute. I do have neighbors who are working locally, and are comfortable. They have specific jobs. Some of them are in the military or contract for the military or govt agency. Others are teaching or in in healthcare. Some are in law enforcement. Some are lawyers. All of these careers require education or training after high school.

I also have neighbors that work really hard at nearby warehouse or shipping outlets. Sadly, these warehouse jobs require a lot of stamina and often mean working two jobs to make ends meet, for a family of four. If you are a student there are plenty of part-time entry level or warehouse jobs. These jobs will help you get by.

My spouse commutes and I now have a home based tech business.

Bottomline: In this area if you have to work and do not want a commute, you need additional education or specialized training. Otherwise, you will be stuck in a financial rut, and will be making it more difficult for yourself.

There is so much potential for this beautiful area. We need to rethink a technology or high tech campus, or recruiting effort. Otherwise, it is a long commute unless you are suited for the limited professional path that exists up here. Not everyone is a match for professions that find economic success in our area. Some acquire further education and then find higher skilled/higher paying jobs to be limited.

I agree...Army has been very good to me (even though I'm in the civilian sector).

My son works at Grove, and is very happy. He's paid VERY well for a "line worker", and has GREAT benefits.

I suspect the "best place to work" depends on your skills, education, preferences and past experience.

That said, I work from home. Which, IMHO, is the best place to work! wink.gif

Hey Flipper, I think $20/hour (give or take a few dimes) for an entry level position is pretty FRICKEN GOOD! I'm not sure how high your expectations are, but I'd say $20 for a 21 year old kid is a fine start.

AND...he's not a dumb huntin redneck. He's college-bound (had to defer a few years to help out at home since hubby is VERY sick), was not only on honor roll, but in Arts Honors also. Drives a late-model sports car with all the bells and whistles, and has 2 more hopped-up hot-rods paid for and sitting in the driveway. Also, he can carry his own in an intelligent conversation with anyone, (he actually knows the meaning of and can SPELL big words) AND he has some skills you obviously don't have - HE CAN SPELL AND USES CORRECT ENGLISH! Oh, he's not gay either.

You sound like one of those guys at Manitowic he tells me about, the drop-outs that reek of stale smoke, have dirty fingernails when they ARRIVE at work, wear a NASCAR hat and think it's funny to tell "gay/racial" jokes, while hiding their scum-covered girlie magazines in their tool-box.

No wonder you can't figure out why people work so hard - you're STUPID!

Whatever you say but just remember from here on out whenever I say or seem to generalize about something I never mean 'all' nothing is ever all. Im farrrrrrrrrrr from being like most of them up there, thats why I left the place and you are so right about your generalization of most of them. As far as spelling its ManitowOc not ManitowIc, lol. I won the Frederick County spelling bee when I was in middle school so you cant teach me much about spelling- my typing completely sucks however. I bet you enjoyed writing that stuff to me didnt ya? good Im glad you did. Grove doesnt pay 20 dollars an hour for his work anyway, maybe around 16 at best.

I know why they work so hard - Im not trying to figure it out. Why dont you respond back then to that one I put in here. That final paragraph you wrote about those employees is almost a masterpiece except the part where you say Im one of them, hell they make so much why cant they clean their pee pees or fingernails? Thats the majority of men up here , how can women even do anything with the guys with their nasty smelling stench? I would never even attempt to do it unless I was nice and clean, the men up here dont care and the women must not either, thats gross.

IMO The best place I've worked is Frederick County Government. Good pay, GREAT benefits.

A short commute for good pay and benefits. And it's not too tough to get in with them if you have skills.

Everyone I know that works for govnt, hardly works, and takes off at least 4 months or more out of the year, whenever they want it seems. I dont call that work.

My spouse works in Montgomery County as a web designer and IT manager. It is a supportive and successful company, owned by a very involved family. The company develops e-learning tools, publications, and multi media materials. They provide IT support and multi media resources to agencies and companies working in the field of substance abuse, prevention, and treatment programs.

The owners are very nice and set a great tone for the employees. It would be a hard place to leave. The wonderful atmosphere off-sets the gross commute. biggrin.gif

Sounds like a winner if it really stays to its purpose. I have no trust in Montgomery County or any DC suburb due the fantasy material world they live in.

4 months PAID LEAVE? Hard to believe. And taking off here and there whenever one wants wouldn't last in the division where I worked anyway.

I have personal experience in this area--after 20 years, hubby gets 5 weeks a year time off. That is all. And that is after 20 years..and oh yeah--he is not eligible to retire early either because in the early 80's they changed the retirement. Now he does have 300 hours of sick leave accumulated. But he often donates part of it to coworkers who need it, and if he got cancer or some such thing it would be gone in a heartbeat...
Udmas
Tx, what do you mean he is not eligible to retire early? He can't retire at 55 or 60 or he can't retire with only 20 years in, just wonderin. biggrin.gif
txexpatriot
He can retire at like 56 or something, But the 20 years & out thing is long gone.. and there are rumours it may change again...

Now I have personal experience on the receiving end of this. I actually had a major surgery and had to recover for 6 weeks after. My coworkers were awesome and donated more than enough leave! Which was more than I could say for working in other places I have... they really sucked...

When hubby worked for the VA, I think he ended up with about 3 months off a year IF you included all vacation, sick AND holidays.

HaHa i know someone who works for the VA in Martinsburg and gets off more than that, still gets paid for it but does nothing with their time off cept sit on the couch, unless they go out to eat.
jelsey
Flipper, you really are a dick.

I've got over 23 years of federal service. At that point, feds get 8 hours of annual leave for each 2-week pay period, in addition, we get 4 hours of sick leave for each 2-week pay period.

I've got a great job, with great benefits and great pay and I've EARNED it all thru hard work, and soon I'll be able to sit back and enjoy the retirement that I've EARNED thru hard work. (Early retirement...I yearn for the old days of "20 and out").

If you have fed "friends" (imagine that!) that have 4 months off each year, then they must have worked like hell the other 8 months to earn that time.

And yes, butt-wipe, Grove DOES pay almost $20/hour (give or take a few dimes) for the entry-position my son is in. Maybe if you worked hard and EARNED a good position, you'd be able to enjoy a decent paycheck and all that a decent paycheck can provide for you.

Stick a fork in me...I'm done with you...for now.

I dont care about pay, Im only worried about accomplishment and achievement, thats worth way more than money by far. Hell the people i know that works at the VA sit all day printing stuff for themselves on the internet, come with a big stack that was printed.
Yossarian
Accomplishment and achievement in what?

Enough already of your criticism of every hard working individual in the world. Exactly what color is the sky in your world?

You scorn everything that normal people respect and endear. You scorn hard working people. You scorn families. You scorn children.

It's time to step up to the plate. What exactly do you intend to accomplish and achieve? What are YOUR goals.

Your intent on this forum seems to incite, bait and belittle. If that's your purpose, fine. But there's going to be a bunch of people here blocking your posts from being seen.

Jelsey: I thank you for reiterating the point I had made earlier which he laughed at. Yes, you get 5.2 weeks of vacation per year & 2.6 weeks of sick leave per annum. That is all.. And you can 'retire early' at 56 or so...I have had many people tell me--why isn't hubby out & on his 2nd career? To which I give them a blank stare and ask them when they are gonna do the same?

Thanks for the tip on Grove. I will share that option with my nephew. He is interested in staying in the area while he thinks about what to do after graduation. He is a hard worker, just not sure what career path to explore. Grove might be a good place to land while he looks into options.
jelsey
Make sure you let your nephew know that Grove will also pay for his COLLEGE EDUCATION! Just as long as it can benefit Grove (business, accounting, engineering, etc).

I do believe, however, that you have to sign something saying you'll stay at Grove for X years if they pay for your degree.

Good Luck!
jelsey
AND...Grove is "drug free".

Pee testing is mandatory.

When you're injured on the job, they send you to Waynesboro hospital for a pee-test.

You've got 3 hours to give them a "sample".

If you can't pee in 3 hours, apparently you're fired.

Sounds like a good idea.

Didn't Flipper say he USED to work there?

Hmmmmmmm.

Yeah what about me working there before? I havent done drugs in 13 years so that has nothing to do with it, I just would rather utilize the abilities that are my strengths and also I have a bad leg injury with steel rods in the tibial plateau as well as ruptured discs and nerve impingement in my back and shoulders so I cant just work anywhere that gives me a job. Anyone can piss test me any hour of any day let them waste their money they will never find drugs in my system except nicotine.

I think $20/hour is good money. For someone as young as your son is. I would be very proud, if my kids were making a good life for their selves. But I still have a few years left. After all children do need to learn, how to stand on their own two feet. Entry Position, that's like computer work right? smile.gif

I suppose as long as he makes real good money then he is a great person according to the general pop.

He's a great person, because he's making a life for himself. There's probably a few people his age, that don't do nothing. And expect their parents to keep them. At least this person, is standing on their own two feet. And he's becoming a productive young man. From what I read, he's achiving his goals. Yes to me, that said a lot about a person. At least he isn't lazy, like some people I know. Yes, if that was my child, I would be very proud of him. I would still say the same, if the person was only making $10/hour or less. For me, this isn't about how much he's making. It's what he's doing with his life that counts. I do believe your just jealous, period
