Why has it become to damn expensive to prepare and file taxes. I have used TaxCut for years and last year did them for free on H&R Blocks site and paid a fee to e-file.
This year its $30 to prepare, $30 to efile ($15 for Fed and $15 for State) and TurboTax Online even wants almost $30 for direct deposit!
Anyone know of cheaper alternatives? I am looking to get a decent refund and want it quick and cheap. Looks like $60 is the best I could find.

Turbo Tax and and e-file was about $70 for me. I had the state refund in 2 days and the fed in 10.
If you do direct deposit but paper file, it should still only take a few weeks.

Glad I could help.
You could have filed state for free on the MD Comptroller website.

IIRC, Some of those free e-filing deals at the state and IRS sites have income limitations. 52K I think it is.
CPD or Cf, does the site you used let you import previous tax year info from TT or Tax Cut?

I don't think so.

Topic: Importing last year's return from another program
Response:Unfortunately, the only returns that our TaxACT program will import are ones from the previous year's TaxACT editions. We continually evaluate our priorities and make product enhancements each year. Please continue to visit our product pages for future enhancement updates.

I found the diference: TurboTax did not use my second mortgage interest paid like it should have.
That's my story and I am sticking to it!

Has anybody ever filed an amended return to get more refund? I jumped the gun and filed my taxes before I got my tax forms from the university. I didn't even realize tuition was deductible.
Refiguring things with the college deductions would get me another couple hundred bucks, if filing an amended return isn't a hassle.

It's not that big of a deal, you file a 1040-X, ammended return, one column with the numbers on the original return and the other with the adjusted numbers. Very simple.

Thanks. I can't fault Turbo Tax for missing the deduction. The program asked about college, but I just skipped over it.
