OK, I have XP Media Center and after typing my password it shows the loading profile window then it goes right to CLOSING NETWORK CONNECTIONS and then logs me off.

I tried Safe Mode and loading Last Known Good and I get the same results. I tried editing registry (from tips I found in a Google search) and they did not work. The only other suggestions I have seen say to re-install- that is not an option.

I am beginning to think that Vista somehow de-activated the Media Center install. When I installed Vista it was an upgrade from Media Center. I am having problems now with the clone of media Center that I made to another drive.

Any thoughts?

No clue bud. I have read so many horror stories about Vista on one of my gamer forums that it's not even close to an option for me. There have been FOUR separate megathreads just for Vista issues. I will use Vista when I build my next system at the end of summer, and it will be a fresh install, hopefully with most of the bugs worked out by then.

You don't want my advice. wink.gif

Vista is running great - no issues except for certain features not available in the Home Premium edition. My problem is with XP Media Center. I made the clone incase I didn't like Vista and wanted to go back to XP.

I do have the recovery disks but I changed alot on the system since they were made- but they are still an option. I have never liked the format and re-install suggestion I get from most people. Its like having a broken window (pun intended) and demolishing the house.

The only thing I have found is a thread about copying userinit.exe to wasupdater.exe then being able to log in and edit the registry- that did not work. mad.gif

Oh, well back to the drawing board.

I run Vista ulitmate (thanks to a hack) and XP Media center side by side because of some software and hardware not able to run under Vista (HP hardware YAY HP!!!!!!!!). I have no trouble. One thing I noticed is although media center is actually on partition c when I run vista it show as it is on partition c and media center is on d. Confused? I know I was when I kept trying to install software to d. LOL

Instead of a reinstall have you tried running the windows repair option? Not the recovery console but the repair? You will think you are reinstalling when you start the disk but you get to a point that asks you to repair or new install. It should fix the windows registry and leave everything else intact.

He is something you can try. In my troubleshooting ive found that sometimes user profiles become corrupted, ntuser.dat etc.. You'll have to be familiar with old dos commands such as cd and rename etc...Press F8 when booting and choose recovery console. Once your at the command prompt just rename your user profile to something else. I usually just put a 1 or some other character after it. Type exit when your done and the pc should reboot. When you logon it should create a new profile. If your problem is a corrupted profile then it will log in since it will be creating a new profile for your username. Then you can take your original profile and copy the contents like "my documents" etc. to the new profile so you dont loose anything.

A day late....

I tried an in place install and it seemed to work but upon reboot things got worse. Now I get no logon screen....

Its not a problem anymore. I wiped the partition. wink.gif
