Full Version: Kelly's Cuts
Herald-Mail Forums > Education > Washington County
valentine
I no longer read the column entitled "Kelly's Cuts" in which she takes quotes from the Mail Call column and mocks and humiliates the contributors for their poor grammar or lack of education. She must think that she is a very bright talented individual. I find it to be offensive to mock the locals when they are sincerely expressing their opinions.

Ms. Kelly has had some kind of college education, which she thinks entitles her to humiliate the residents of this community who are trying to express their fears and questions.

If Ms Kelly were a true journalist, she would be investigating many of the situations and practices in Washington County that need some sunshine. However, that would take courage and dedication. That is what earns you a Pulitzer Prize.

Kelly, if you continue on your path, your future includes many years in a tenth-rate town working for a fifth rate newspaper that nobody wants to read.

Smile and the world smiles with you,
frown and you frown alone.

While I don't think it humiliates anyone, after all, how can you humiliate someone who's identity you don't know, it does say something for the education that the callers received.

Besides, I really don't see anyone with any degree of intelligence calling in to those phone numbers.

Journalists have for years used this type of source for their columns; journalists from 1st rate newspapers in 1st rate towns.

Those folks really shouldn't have cut English class... smile.gif

Disgraceful, just plain disgraceful.

I never knew that section was in the paper until now. Thanks for pointing that out.

Ha! Never thought I would be the one defending someone who makes fun of someone else. But......

I think Kelly (whoever that is) is so witty!

No one knows who called in the statements. And many times, Kelly just takes part of a sentence and makes a joke!

Just laughing at everyday language mistakes. Funny, if you ask me! I don't see any harm in it.
Heather
I thought this was going to be about meat...or hair.
Mcgee
Well it kinda is Heather. They cut up the english language and put some hair raising statements in the paper. blink.gif

I enjoy her cuts. It means we as readers get to see the ones that 'don't make it in'...

This falls under the category of "better to be thought a fool than opening your mouth and be proved a fool" if they dont want their calls to be
poked fun at the best thing to do is not call. You have to admit. there aren't a lot of brain surgeons calling and leaving messages laugh.gif

I really don't see any harm in mocking an adult (without a disability) that has the grammar skills of a 2nd grader.

Here is how i see it:

If i call someone fat is it going to make me any thinner? NO!

If i make fun of others grammar does it make me any smarter? No!

Oh, ok.

I have more important things to worry about then someone grammer or spelling. I notice people from different parts of the state & different states seem to talk a little different. Does that make them less then a human bein, I don't think so.
Heather
Embrace your inadequacies. Own them. Learn to laugh at them. You'll be a much healthier and happier individual for having done so. If you can't do that, improve upon them.

There are some older folks out there who didn't have the benefit of graduating high school because they had to quit school early to go to work and help keep their family alive. Many of them don't speak with the best grammar and may not write too well, but they are wise and skilled in many other ways not immediately apparent to someone listening to them or reading their writing. I think many of those Kelly makes fun of fall into this group. It may be our parents or grandparents or older friends, and I think she could find better things to do with her time if she is as talented and funny as she wants us to believe. JMO.

If she were talented she wouldnt be writing a 2 paragraph blurb in the herald mail wink.gif

Everyone's gotta start somewhere, even F. Scott Fitzgerald started writing for a small weekly paper.

I look at what Kelly writes as something like "Herald-Mail Bloopers!" Nobody knows who said what..... no names are mentioned.

"Those who laugh at themselves will never ceased to me amused."

Amen, Snoopy.

If she were a true journalist she would be investigating some of the stuff that is going on around Washington County and would not be so lazy as to pick on the most vulnerable. Talk truth to power.

But see, you have to understand, not all people fit into your nichey little world. There are investigative journalists, like the Post's famous Woodward and Bernstein, humorous journalists like our own Tim Rowland (who can also be serious), Lifestyle journalists that concern themselves with socialism issues (weddings and such), business journalists who perhaps report on the stock market or corporate dealings, etc.

Being a true journalist does not necessarily mean you have to do serious issues.

You have a problem with her writing about bloopers, so be it. But don't criticize the type of journalism with which she is currently interested in reporting. And if it bothers you that much.... don't read it. Simple. Problem solved.
samy0
she is probably right out of school. Getting her feet wet in the wonderful world of journalism. When she makes the big time we can all say "I knew her when". I think Yoss has the hots for her laugh.gif

Snoopy,

I understand what you are saying. But, you're assuming that she is "picking on" the uneducated. Anybody can phone in a blooper. There is no prejudice here. Educated and Uneducated, alike, are reported. You would find bloopers in any part of the country if all newspapers had a "call-in" comments section. I am sure that could do a TV show on that if all papers had a collumn!

And, again, there are no names involved. So, no one knows who made the blooper. It could have been anyone, even Naomi!! wink.gif (just seeing if she's lurking!)
Aldo
Since stooping to allowing such anonymous comments in the paper was a regrettable mistake in the first place, a mistake that has proved so popular they can't back down now, perhaps, just perhaps this is the H-M's way of discouraging its use?

Geeeeez, now I'm starting to sound like a conspiracy theorist!
