We got our first cat there 12+ years ago. What a grueling interview! This was in Mont. Co.

Got our one dog there. I know people complain about the interview/background check/fee, but it's in the best interest of the animal.
Just passing out a pet to anyone with $10 is rarely good for an animal, especially breeds like pits, dobies and rotties. Sometimes less-than-savory folks try to get those animals cheap to use as guard dogs, fighting dogs, etc. Of course, not everyone is like that (I have a dobie mix myself). But the interview and stuff helps weed out those types of people.

7 years ago, I try to get a dog from them. They let me take the dog out for a walk. But when it came down to it. I couldn't have the dog because me children were to young at the time. So needless to say, I went out there empty handed and broken hearted.
But that's okay, I found a private breeder and bought me a female German Shepherd puppy. And just 3 days ago, I got my second German Shepherd dog. Now we have Misty 7 and Earl 2 their happy and so am I.

Of course I'm not mad about it. At least I finally got what I wanted. Since the ex didn't like dogs or cats, he would never let me have one.

Got a Lab mix about 15 years ago -- fast interview, took dog the same day even though they could not reach my reference. I've got an honest face...

About five years ago after our dog died I thought it would be a good idea to adopt one. So about every week we would go look at the dogs they had ( we were looking for a beagle) finally we found one, we took him out and played a little then asked what we had to do to adopt him.
We filled out the form and left, they called my references and my employer then called and said we were approved so we went in and asked when they would have the dog ready for us to take home.
Thats when we were informed that they already adopted the dog we looked at.
Unbelievable, I asked them what they thought I filled the papers out for, needless to say I was p!ssed off, so I told them to forget it and left.
Then they started calling and telling us they had a beagle if we wanted to come look, finally I had to tell them to stop calling as we had already bought a beagle pup.
Not that big of a deal I guess but if we would have had a child with us when we were bonding with the dog and then they give it to someone else it would have been heart breaking.
So to sum up, the Humane Society can kiss my @ss.

Back in late 80's, got a mix from there. Easy as pie. Hey if they let me (at the time a Single Soldier) adopt, anyone can. But then again, right after my adopting (Buddy) the dog, they may have changed the rules.

I adopted my cattle dog from Frederick County. It was very simple, they didn't ask for references and we didn't have to go through a home visit, but I did have to sit down for a brief interview.

I have little doubt that the HS has suffered from poor management over the last decade. I have seen it firsthand. But I might put up with a little of their BS for the sake of a dog if I ever decide to get another.
