Full Version: Jeep owners: do you wave at other Jeeps?

My husband has owned a Jeep for several years. I get such a kick out of the fact that wherever we drive, whenever we pass a Jeep going the other way, he waves to that driver and that driver waves back. It's like a little secret club among Jeep owners, mostly unknown to people without one. Yet I haven't noticed that people in Honda CR-V's wave at each other, or Mini drivers, or Hummers. I think that the only other people on the road who do this might be motorcyclers. To all my fellow Jeep owners, I wanted to ask the following:

1. Do you notice that women don't wave as often as men?
2. What's your favorite wave style? I've gotten the casual index finger lift off of the wheel, the full-on wave out the window, even the "J" hand sign from some overzealous drivers.
3. Will you wave to a Jeep Cherokee, or just "real" Jeep Wranglers? What about those really old Toyotas that look like Jeeps?
4. Do you wave if you or the other Jeep is at a stop sign, or it is just when you're moving (hubby says it's only when you're moving but I have seen evidence to the contrary).
5. How often do you wave? Does the frequency of the waving correllate to how "into" your Jeep you are? Like, if it's all pimped out and jacked up you'll be a person who waves all the time, vs. someone who just sees their Jeep as a mode of transportation and doesn't know about the secret wave etiquette.
6. Have you ever almost run into someone because the act of waving temporarily distracted you from the road?

Personally, when I'm driving the Jeep I often forget that I should be waving. I'll get almost all the way to my destination and realize I hadn't been looking for Jeeps coming the other way, then I feel kind of bad that I probably dissed 5 or 6 people along the way. They probably think "there's one of those chicks who never wave" but in fact it just slips my mind occasionally. Conversely, there are times when I'm driving our other vehicle, an SUV, and as I pass a Jeep I'll ALMOST wave but catch myself just in time.

Oh I wave at them alright with everyones favorite finger just like i do to alot of motorcyclists. Anything to join a group for acceptance they do. My late uncle and I did used to run the back roads in his jeep up in Michaux forest a long time ago but these new jeeps surely arent like the old ones, they are like driving regular old SUVs nowadays.

Clever,
It's a Jeep thing you wouldn't understand" wink.gif

As a previous Wrangler owner, it's a something that Wrangler owners have been doing for years ....

Sorta like Harley owners wave at each other as they pass.....

Oh, I understand, I just think it's a neat/funny phenomenon. It makes me feel a little special when I wave and I get a wave in return. My husband says that people in Wash. Co. don't wave half as much as people in Fred. Co. What do you think? Maybe the jeep dealers in this area forget to hand out the "special pamphlet" explaining the wave to people up here? wink.gif

I don't know, when I had my jeep (97-2002), I never had a problem with getting a wave from a fellow jeep owner, but just like anything I think the times have changes. I mean, I never thought I'd see the day where they would turn an original 4x4 into a 4 door family vehicle. But it's cool though. Remember it is a special wave, IT"S A JEEP THING ;-)
Touching on a point you previously amde , when I traded in my Jeep for a Durango, the 1st week or so , I caught myself several times throwing a hand up to other Jeeps passing by. Talk about feeling stupid, after the fact :-) anyhow, I miss my playtoy and when my son is a bit older (it's tough putting a carseat in the back of 2 door Jeep), i'll have another one and be waving proudly wink.gif lol

I'm a waver!

I love to wave, 'course, I love driving my Jeep - so when I am driving I am feeling particularly happy!

I found out about the Wrangler wave from the Wikipedia while I was researching prior to purchasing my Jeep.

How thrilled I was when we picked up the Jeep and within 2 blocks got the first wave! I was so excited, I waved frantically - full hand, fingers extended, wagging my hand like it was on fire and smiling like a homecoming queen laugh.gif My husband slid down in his seat and pulled his new jeep hat down to cover his face and said "honey, I think you are supposed to be a little 'cool' about it - you look like a nerd!" rolleyes.gif

So now I change up my waves, sometimes lifting just the index finger, or first two fingers, sometimes lifting the entire hand. Sometimes I forget and wave to other Jeepers when I am walking - doh!

I have found that Virginia Jeepers tend to wave less than Marylanders, but have not seen much difference between Washington and Frederick wavers.

laugh.gif Oh my god, that is just too funny. Yes, it's very important to look cool with the wave. The worst is when you wave too soon and they leave you hangin' -- timing seems to be essential. And I've never waved while walking; I give you points for enthusiasm!

Going to wikipedia now to look up the Wrangler wave. Now I know that they have an entry for absolutely EVERYTHING...

Actually, I'm not a big Harley fan, but Harley riders will often wave even if you're not driving a Harley as long as you're on a motorcycle. "Whatever puts your knees in the breeze" as one Harley die-hard told me.
peacefrog
Yeah... it's not just Harley riders who wave. Everyone I know who rides will wave at other bikes, whether it's a Yamaha or Harley or Indian.

You may as well wave at all SUVs then cuz thats basically what the newer jeeps are these days.

Do you wave at other hobos on the street, you may as well. rolleyes.gif

I crossed paths on a King St. sidewalk with what I thought could be one of those getting into a green Jeep a few weeks ago. I was too chicken to stop and ask if she was webbie. ph34r.gif
