PHILADELPHIA —

A police officer shot in the head during a robbery in a doughnut shop died Thursday morning, the police commissioner said, and his killer remained at large. He was the third city officer shot in the span of four days.

Charles Cassidy, 54, was shot in the forehead Wednesday at a Dunkin' Donuts when a hooded robber spun from the counter and fired at him as he walked in the door, according to an employee.

The 25-year police veteran died at 9:40 a.m. Thursday at Albert Einstein Medical Center, Commissioner Sylvester Johnson said.

"This is a sad day for the city of Philadelphia," Johnson said.

Police released portions of a chilling videotape that shows the hooded robber pushing aside two customers and waving a gun as he approaches the counter. It also shows him grabbing the Cassidy's pistol as he fled.

The suspect hadn't been found Thursday. Johnson said video showed the gunman running through the shop's parking lot with a distinctive gait, almost as if he had a limp.

"We still have an armed and dangerous man out there in the streets of Philadelphia," Johnson said.

The officer came in twice a day for a large coffee with cream and sugar, shop employee Sandra Kim said. "He's always nice to all the employees," she said. "The officer was just coming in for a cup of coffee like normal."

Johnson said the officer was doing a routine check on the shop, which had been robbed Sept. 18. He said he didn't think the robber got away with any money.

The shooting came about 12 hours after a masked gunman shot traffic Officer Mario Santiago in the shoulder during a chase downtown.

Santiago was responding to a report of a gunman in a sport utility vehicle shooting at another car, injuring two men and a woman, police said.

He was chasing the SUV when the gunman eventually got out of his vehicle and approached the squad car, firing twice through the window. Santiago was hit once in the right shoulder, Johnson said.

Santiago was in fair condition Wednesday.

Early Sunday, an officer responding to a melee at a West Philadelphia nightclub was shot in the ankle. More than two dozen bullets were fired, police said. One suspect was fatally shot and another was arrested.

A prayer service for Cassidy was scheduled for Friday morning at City Hall.

no doubt he was a brave officer, despite his apparent weakness for baked goods.

Or, for his weakness for coffee with cream and sugar.

We're not stereotyping police officers are we CD? biggrin.gif

i didnt have to. the Bangles did.

in all seriousness though, how awful. first of all, who robs a Dunkin' Donuts? of all the places to hold up where there are NOT likely to be law enforcement... someone robs a dunkin donuts!? good grief. and the sicvk part is, they probably saw them when they walked in. they could have changed their minds and said "know what, maybe i wont kill anyone afterall today". but no. now there are cop killers (and not the Ice-T sort) on the loose. their mothers must be so proud.

There's video of this from a Philly tv station floating around out there on the the interwebz. I saw it earlier, but don't have the link. It's nothing grisly, it just shows the robber running away, gun in hand, after the shooting.

There have been a lot of cop shootings in Philly lately. This was the 3rd cop shot in a matter of a week. On Tuesday night, a cop was pursuing a gunman in a SUV when the guy pulled over, went up to the cop in the car, shot him, and then jumped in the Schuykill River to escape. They pulled the gunman's body from the river the next morning, so he got what he deserved. Another cop was shot the other night when gunfire broke out at a club and he got shot in the ankle.

Unfortunately, this latest cop did not make it like the other ones have. It's sad. You can go here to view the surveillance video.

Yeah, I hope they catch the shooter all right. First I hope he fights enough to get the dog cut loose on him, and the dog castrates him. And then he bleeds to death.

update: looks like the store was being robbed BEFORE the officer walked in.

Suspect in Philly Cop Killing Caught

PHILADELPHIA —

A suspect in the slaying of a police officer during a robbery at a doughnut shop was apprehended early Tuesday at a shelter in Florida, police said.

Investigators began looking in Florida after receiving reports that John Lewis, 21, had boarded a bus for Miami during the weekend.

Officer Chuck Cassidy, 54, died Thursday, a day after a gunman shot him in the head when Cassidy interrupted an armed robbery at a Dunkin' Donuts.

Witnesses have said a gunman went into the shop and demanded money just before the policeman opened the door. The man then spun around and shot Cassidy before the officer could react, they said.

Police Commissioner Sylvester Johnson has said one of two weapons officers recovered Monday at a Philadelphia home may be the weapon used to kill Cassidy.

A private viewing for Cassidy was scheduled Tuesday, with a public viewing and funeral service scheduled downtown on Wednesday.

Cassidy was the third Philadelphia police officer to be shot in four days. The other two officers survived.

The first newspaper reports, it state's:

Charles Cassidy, 54, was shot in the forehead Wednesday at a Dunkin' Donuts
when a hooded robber spun from the counter and fired at him as he walked in the door,
according to an employee.

To me that clearly show that the officer was just arriving at the Dunkin' Donuts

Second newspaper reports just words is a little different.

Officer Chuck Cassidy, 54, died Thursday, a day after a gunman shot him in the head
when Cassidy interrupted an armed robbery at a Dunkin' Donuts.

That's newspaper reporters for you.

My heart goes out to the family. Always sadden me when a officer is killed.
Hope they catch the person quick.
