The Amish? I know there's a crew of Amish that operate out of Waynesboro. They control the flow of Amish macaroni salad through out the whole region.

Reminds me of a small-time cover rock band I saw a few years back where the band dressed as Amish. It was hilarious watching them play AC/DC dressed as Amish... Can't remember the name of the group, though.

And a shout-out to the fine Amish workmanship on the gardening sheds and playhouses too!!

Back on topic, I too have heard general comments from people the past few years about increased gang activity in Waynesboro, but nothing specific. I did hear that the gangs were hispanic ones. My brother lives in Waynesboro and he hasn't said it's scary to get around up there or anything, but he works in Frederick and doesn't spend a lot of time hanging out in his own town.

that is totally true. there are several sects of ms13 in chambersburg and waynesboro, and word is tensions are rising between some of them. i think the whole idea of a gang is totally lame, and the fact that they often involve children makes me what to whoop every last one of them.

Great post, perfect.

I live there, however a bit ABOVE Waynesbuggy. Got a 22 year old and 2 16-year olds, and don't hear a peep about "gangs". We do have a large hispanic population, but the ones I've met are as "normal" as me and mine.

OK, I have "heard" that MS13 are in the area, but I think they're in most of the tri-state at this point. I have no prob downtown at night, even walking the allies I feel safe.

What little "gang activity" I've seen is the hill-billy white boys playing "wanna be" gangsters. When I encounter them looking threatening at Sheetz, I laugh and tell them to pull their damn pants up - "Hey kid, you got a mirror at your house, 'cause you look stupid. Pull your fricken pants up stop slouching".

I ususally get the finger, and they might throw their cig at my truck, but if I get out and give them a good tongue-lashing, it stops. Amazing what a confident adult can accomplish if a little authority is used.

Haven't met anybody in Waynesboro that scares me (OK, Flip DOES concern me, but not regarding violence). Either I'm too stupid to be scared, or I'm too confident to be intimidated, either way, it's MY damn town, and no bored kid/teen/young adult is gonna scare me into changing my ways in my own little piece of paradise.

Good for you Jelsey, if more people thought like you all towns would be safer and cleaner. Maybe you could go down to J-street, Locust, Mulberry and a few others in Hagerstown and give a training.

No thanks, I'll stick to my small-town, small-intellect gangstas. That's part of the reason I MOVED to Waynesbuggy.

I just moved to Waynesboro after 22 yrs living in downtown Hagerstown (still work downtown Hagerstown). I'm so glad I moved. Seems 1/2 a world away from downtown Hagersown and all the crap you have to put up with (even the air is cleaner). Traffic, people yelling and other noises hookers walking up and down the streets, drunks and everything else you have to put up with. Nobody walking up to the building every 2 minutes all day/night long, etc....

I barely hear any neighbors and when I do, it's their lawn mowers. Of course, I hate that because I have to think about mowing mine too.. LOL.

Crime is everywhere but after dark downtown isn't a place I would want to be walking (in both places).

HagJohn, welcome to Waynesboro!

Turn right @ AT&T and come on up to the top of the mountain if you're looking for even MORE quiet. Just ignore the shotgun blasts, 'cause its' just ussin out a huntin' for dinner.

Born and raised "on the Mountain" just above Waynesboro. Graduated from Waynesboro Schools. Love to get up that way every chance I get. I still frequent the bars and clubs up there because it's a completely different scene!!! I'd never be afraid to walk downtown at night up there!!! I miss it soooo much!!!

Suzie's right, it IS a different scene! We're down to one bar Suzie, Gulla closed up last year, maybe year BEFORE last! The hotel is still hoppin' though, and since Red's/Ma & Pa's closed, the hotel is selling cigs for $5.50!!!!! I told them they should stock milk and break too (actually I think Bo might have that covered!)

My oldest graduated from WASH and I must say, I was impressed with the education he received, I was afraid a "small town" school may not be as up-to-date as I'd have liked, but so far, so good. My 16-year-olds are holding their own, even though the Health Class information is incredibly out-of-date.

As for walking on "the hill" at night, stay alert for the drunk-drivers, we seem to have more than our fair share up there. And keep an eye out for DC plates, seems the drug traders have discovered our little slice of heaven and are doing their best to capture our young (and sadly, our not-so-young). Rumor had it that some of the "old timers" are planning a nice little surprise next time a certain luxury sedan with DC plates parks itself on a particular back-road.

Does Hump still play David Allen Coe on the Juke Box at the Hotel??? He used to crack me up. All the kids that Bo has he should have his own cows to milk just to give to them!

DC plates huh??? Interesting...... Sad though. When we were kids the worse we got into was partyin in the mountains and pushin port o pots over the view!!!

Well the partyin and pushin' is still going on. Haven't seen Hump for awhile, been trying to avoid the bars lately - too much yard work and wood-cutting to do.

At least Bo is "single" (at the moment, and I DO mean "moment") and not making more little mountaineers! Shoot, he's got custody of ALL the boys, what's he up to now, 5 boys, 5 ex-baby-mommas? Thank God he's a good father, since his choice of women hasn't been all that great.

Now, if we could stop the "urban-visitors" and get the 15 & 16 year olds to stop having babies, it would be Nirvana...Almost!

I laughed when I read this.

I'm guessing you've never lived in a real city outside of the immediate area, right?
