Full Version: Parents of MySpace hoax victim seek justice

The parents of a 13-year-old Missouri girl who hanged herself after a failed MySpace romance — later uncovered as a hoax — say they have yet to receive an apology from the family they blame for their daughter’s death.

“They’ve absolutely offered no apologies,” Ron Meier told TODAY co-host Matt Lauer on Monday. “They sent us a letter in the mail, basically saying that they might feel a little bit of responsibility, but they don’t feel no guilt or remorse or anything for what they did.”

Rather, said Tina Meier, the people are upset with her for going public with their story. Last week, while shopping, she ran into the woman who invented the hoax, Tina Meier said.

“She asked me to stop doing all of this,” she told Lauer. “I told her that we would not stop, that we were going to continue for justice for Megan because we knew what they did.”

The Meiers’ daughter, Megan, hanged herself Oct. 16, 2006.

The Meiers have not named the people because they do not want to identify their teenage daughter, who had once been a friend of Megan’s.

After the two girls had a falling out, the mother invented a 16-year-old boy, “Josh Evans,” created a MySpace account for him, and made Megan believe he was new in town and thought she was cool.

Very sad story, but I like to see how this plays out.

Should the other people be responable, since the child committed suicide?

Now I'm wondering if there could have been more of a underlining problem.

No parent can watch their child on the computer 24/7, child are smart when it comes to computers.

With My Space you have to be at least 14 to join. She was only 13, the parents allow her to sign up and lie about her age.

Wonder what your all thoughts are on this.
Heather
I have four kids on my myspace friends list that are under 14. Parents are letting their kids do it because it is/was the "it" thing. They aint 14. I guess since my myspace has only violence and curse words, it's okay?! biggrin.gif

Two of those 10 year old sweethearts once gained up on me and insisted I was a loser for being a virgin at 30 years old. sad.gif No joke. 10 years old.

oh man. i think that's getting to be an epidemic around here.... the virginity at 30, not the 10 year olds. <3 and no, i am NOT going to help anyone out with that... although... i do know this really mellow hooker..... bwhahahaha.

how 'bout this, though... people.... MONITOR WHAT YOUR KIDS DO ON LINE. Myspace profiles are supposed to be private until a certain age,and after that you can KEEP them private as long as you want. so how bout telling your little sweetie she CANT talk to the whole world, she can put up sparkly stupid "happy hump day" animations for her 5 approved freiends only, and if she doesnt like it SHE can pay the internet bill and buy her OWN computer. for pete's sake.

I happened to be monitoring my kid's myspace & found different neighborhood kids whom I knew were 10 & 11...I got their sites taken down..Haven't looked to see if they are back up now but as of 4 mos. ago they were still not back on..

Oh Heather-you poor thing! My brain hurts for you, but 10 yr olds are twits..don't let the stupids get to you. biggrin.gif

Regarding the case of the girl in Missouri, there's something deeply sick and disturbing about adults ganging up and tormenting a 13-year-old child in this way! WTF is wrong with people? The mother of the other girl may not have directly killed the girl, but she definitely played a role in her death. I hope she is prosecuted and held completely accountable for what she has done. mad.gif

I learn about My Space about a year ago. Seen a lot of people talking about it.
So I went on the search to fine out what My Space was all about. To me, these young
people act like their adults and post pictures. That I know I wouldn't approve off at all.
Most of all totally lie about their age.

I would never let my child have a My Space account. There darn lucky they use the computer when
they do. I have seen to much garbage on there as it is. I don't even have a My Space account, never will.
I'm sure there's criminals preying on young children. It's been in the news enough times.

Even if I had a My Space account, I wouldn't go out of my way to talked to a bunch of teenage kids.
I would have nothing in commend with a bunch of kids. I'm a adult and I talk to adults only.

I would agree with WildBlue, something needs to be done. I'm still wondering if this is the underlining cause of it.
Could have it been that she was also having trouble in school, or with some neighborhood children?

These young people need to realize, you can always believe what the other person is saying on the internet.
A lot people will lie on the internet. After all what's the chances of actually meeting someone online, especially at that age.
It can takes months to really know how someone is in real life. It's like the 2 faces of Eve. People are one way on the internet and another way in person. It's like a fantasy world to some.

Now I'm wondering, why on earth is Heather telling 10 year old children. She's a 30 year old virgin,
Is it suppose to help them not to have sex at a young age or what? laugh.gif

You know I'm just wondering why she was on myspace to start with...facebook is closer to her age group..... blink.gif

I can be sited for lack of proper grammar to support the sarcasm of my intended point, but then, you guys are guilty of being unremarkable and not focusing on the real issue. tongue.gif

The Attorney for the woman accused of posing as the boy interested in the girl who committed suicide was on the news this morning. She now says she was not the one at the computer saying those things, it was actually a group of teenagers in her house. And prosecuters say charges will not be brought against her.

I don't think any criminal charges can be brought against the woman, but it's very likely that civil charges will be. I really think she needs to be held accountable for what she's done. Nice of her to place the blame on her own kid. rolleyes.gif

Really nice of the mom to blame her own kid when she, the Mom, instigated the web-page. She hired a 18 yr old to set it up and do the data entry as the mom spoke. Nice lady.
On some days, there would be several kids in the room watching one type in their kind words. Mom cheered them on.........She will not be charged. ......A twisted web she weaves as she wiggles out of any blame. Each week she spins a slightly better angle that distances herself. By next month, she will be saying, "Computers?, What is a computer?" Great role model, makes you worry how her own daughter will turn out.

Sick. Just sick.

What I don't understand about this story is the Media questioning Tina Meier about Megans depression and how they would let Megan get emotionally connected to a Boy/Guy on my space. Mrs. Meier said Megan suffered with depression so what is the big deal here? If a person suffers with depression they are to lead a different life than other teenagers? Not fall for a Boy/Guy on my space? I just find this question very lame. If anyone can explain this one to me please do so.

Thank You!

Just a lame way of trying to explain the whole, sorry mess without really focusing on the real issue. The internet is a terrible place for children and teenagers, and that, even with the underlying problems that I'm sure were present, is why this happened.

The woman that created the fake MySpace page has a blog telling her side of the story:

http://meganhaditcoming.blogspot.com/

I'm sure it's only a matter of time before it gets taken down. If you haven't noticed from teh url, the woman blames the dead girl for this whole thing.

"megan had it coming" dot blogspot dot com

Ah, never mind. I went back and read the blog again at it turns out that the whole thing is a hoax. It's not really written by the woman that created the MySpace page. It was some sort of spoof site to show how stupid the news media is.
communityhagerstown
There are now several fake blogs, trolls, flamers, and incredible abuse of the internet re: this one story. It is amazing what some are trying to promote. Undestandably, people are now confused and disgusted.

It is sad. A child is dead at 13, as a parent I can not imagine that pain. The loss of family dreams and potential never reached. In general, it is tragic when a child passes before a parent. It is a life long challenge. I think I will just focus on that, the child, and say a prayer.
