WASHINGTON COUNTY, MD - A shopping trip on Black Friday ended in charges for a local couple.
Police said the couple left a two-year-old alone in a cold car during Thursday night's chilly weather. Police said it took someone else to watch out for the baby's safety and call the authorities. The Washington County Sheriff's Office was called to the Prime Outlets in Hagerstown just before 3:00 a.m.
When they got there, officers found a young boy strapped to a car seat, cold and crying, but the parents were nowhere to be found.
A young Waynesboro, Pennsylvania couple may have gotten so caught up in the Black Friday craze that they left something very important behind.
"A concerned citizen called into the Sheriff's Department in reference to an unattended child left in the parking lot," said Jason Litten, Deputy with the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.
The two-and-a-half year old baby boy is the child of 20-year-old Laura Havens. Deputies said Havens and her boyfriend, 22-year-old Casey Shields, abandoned the child as temperatures dipped down near the freezing point.
"The male seemed to be more concerned about the child than the female was; the biological mother. She had not much concern or care for what was going on," said Litten.
Deputy Litten said it was the child's young cries from the backseat of a car that got the attention of nearby shoppers. When the young couple finally did arrive, an officer was waiting for them.
"They walked out to us, and at that point, both the male and the female were taken into custody and taken to the Washington County Sheriff's Department," said Litten.
Havens and Shields were charged with reckless endangerment while the child was taken to Washington County Hospital.
"I’ve seen children that are very sick, died of cancer. That's something you can't prevent, but this is preventable, and this is wrong. It really is," said Peggy Gregory, Martinsburg resident.
"Priorities in life; obviously family comes first, children are obviously close to the top of that ladder. The sales were going on all day today. I'm sure just as good in the daylight hours as they were at midnight," said Edwin Sharp, Winchester resident.
The boy is expected to be okay, ut the future of his mother and her boyfriend is uncertain. After the young child was released from the hospital, he was turned over to Casey Shields' parents.
The details as to why the child was not given to a blood relative are still unclear. Shields and Havens are still being held at the Washington County Detention Center.
