Ok I have been in town since the beginning of june.

I was staying in my camper at the KOA while looking for a place.

I found a nice little place in the north end...

WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO DO WITH ALL THESE LEAVES????

Its been about 15 years since I lived in a city (norfolk). Living in the country I never had a problem I would run the rider mower over them and bag them and then dump them in the woods.

Some people have special paper bags?
What if I put them in regular trash bags?
will the leaf police come and write me a ticket?
Yossarian
If you're within the city limits, get those large paper bags from one of the home centers (Lowes or Home Depot) or the grocery stores even carry them. The city has one day a week where they will pick up yard waste. But I think they stop doing that sometime this month (if they haven't already).

If you put them in regular trash bags, I don't think they'll take them, plus knowing the city, they probably will fine you for doing that ::sarcasm:: .

If you're in the county, they have no program, though the trash collector that you contract with will pick them up, generally for an additional fee to your regular collection fees.

Or you could could compost them, if you have a corner of the yard somewhere you could put them.

Or rake them up late at night and put them all in your neighbor's yard.

Heck with buying the bags, your only going to throw them away.
So that's like throwing money away and all for what?

Just run over them with a lawn mower a few times.
That's all I do, that's all I ever done. Actually it does benfit's the grass.

that is true... they act as insulation/compost fertilizer for your grass during the winter... of course, if you're sick of looking at them, you could go brown bag mode.

Just so happens I got a mulching mower.
It chops them leaves up pretty good. You won't be
able to tell you even had leaves in the yard.

That's one reason I brought that kind of mower. Save me the trouble of raking smile.gif

If you have a small tree and big yard, just mowing over them won't work. Some leaves, finely chopped are good food for the soil, but too many can cause fungus problems, etc. with your grass.

There was way too many leaves to mulch. The entire yard was covered in about one foot of leaves. The would have choke even the sturdiest of lawnmowers.

thanks for the suggestion though

Brown Bag 'em and put a LARGE note on the bag saying "FREE LEAVES".

I'm always amazed at the folks who ask me for our leaves, apparently "city folk" use them to mulch their gardens.

Up here in Deliverance-land, I use them as bedding/ground cushion for our 5 dogs (yeah, I know, I'm an idiot for having 5 dogs).

The City has extended the leaf pickup (apparently not all the leaves are down at the Mayor's estate) until Dec. 19th. That's the last day they'll get picked up. After that you'll have to do what I do, blow them into your neighbors yard. LOL
My neighbor actually has a tree that doesn't lose it's leaves until mid Jan. Talk about a bummer, my yard will be completely bare of leaves and then presto, yards covered again.
I have been putting it off as long as possible this year, hopefully I can get done this weekend. Heck, I haven't even gotten the pool covered yet. I've been too busy overspending my budget> laugh.gif dry.gif (that's a joke)

Hagerstown City Neighborhood:

My neighbor gets up at 8:00am on Sundays and uses a leaf blower to blow them into the middle of the street. He then mutters, "I am not responsible for anyone elses's leaves. I was responsible. I chopped down all my trees." It worked until a house 4 doors down lost its leaves and the winds came along. I do not think he realizes that the next wind will push all the leaves he blew into the street, back into his yard. This happens every year, always kicking off on the Friday after Thanksgiving. We are intrigued.
(HELLO TO MY NEIGHBOR: Leaf bags or Mulching Mower)

We mow and take the bag over to the house behind us. The neighbor has a huge area for compost. Yup, the Grocery Store or Lowes have the bags. If you put them in the plastic bags they will be left to rot at your curb. People passing by might stop and chat w/ you, suggesting you look into brown bags or a mulch mower. biggrin.gif We were invited by our neighbor to share her compost area. She has a lot of land. Thankfully, she is very nice & sane.

We also brown bag any excess yard waste and put it out on the assigned day for yard waste. We left them at the curb and the city picked them up. If you want to know the definite pick up day for your street ask a neighbor or look out the window and see when the the brown bags are being being dragged to the curb. Some wait til the night before as the rains can soak through the bottom. When we moved in there was a welcome packet with the information. But that is easily misplaced if you move in during the summer. The city does a great job with the leaf, recycling, & trash pick up.

In our previous county people were instructed to rake the leaves to the street by the curb. A truck came by & sucked them up. Each neighborhood was assigned 2 days. We did not have to use bags. But then you had other issues like less parking, dangerous piles kids would play in, & it was easy to miss the day. Hagerstown seems to have a good set up.
Dougstermd
Well they picked up the three plastic bags I left out on sunday. Where do I find the days for different pick ups. Trash vs yard waste?

Dump 'em over your neighbor's fence-most of 'em probably came from their yard anyway.
Heather
I'm one of those aholes that doesn't care about leaves. I think they are pretty. I like them in my yard. I don't mow them. I don't care if they blow into your yard. If my leaves blow into your yard, I wish you wouldn't get rid of them. I don't care if they grow fungus. There are fungus among us all the time.

God forbid something natural occurs in my yard.

If you'd get that puppy you wanted, there would be all kinds of " natural" things going on in your yard. laugh.gif

I'm afraid if I don't get a dog soon I might kidnap my Deacon. wub.gif

I cannot be an irresponsible pet owner though. The log-sawer in the next room is of no help! smile.gif I'm really gonna post a vid of him snoring one of these days. biggrin.gif
