Seems that myactv.net slipped in a modem config change while we weren't looking.
They've doubled the download speed. I was getting 1.5Mbps, I'm now getting 3Mbps.
Anyone interested who needs to be pointed to a speed tester, go to www.dslreports.com, click on tools and then choose a test.
You may want to cold start your modem to make sure you get the latest config file, and possibly they're pushing it out to certain hubs only.
THANK YOU ANTIETAM CABLE!!

Whoa. This could be very helpful to my gaming.
/off to run a speed test
edit:

Still the same for me. I'll mess with a modem reboot later.

Unfortunately you have to be pretty close to the Central Office, and the further away, the less the speed. Which means for me, at near the 25,000 foot limit, I'd be paying that amount for 768Kbs. I'll stick with my $40 a month service.
Is that a package deal Udmas? Phone and Internet, to get the 29.95 internet? Those lucky enough to have FIOS get phone, internet and phoneline television for around $99/month. And the internet speed is like over 18Mps.

I had to agree to a year service with an early termination fee.
I already had verizon phone service so I don't know if thats a requirement or not.

That seems slow for comcast. Have you rebooted your modem lately?

I'm on an island in Southern Maryland about 30 miles from the ISP in Waldorf. Up until last year we just had dial-up so I'm not complaining.

Hey cable 'net experts -- I can't get DSL so am looking at reluctantly paying MYACTV $40 per month for cable. Should I buy my own modem or buy theirs?
Anything I should know about MYCATV before I get hooked?
Thanks!

Go to Circuit City or Best Buy and get your own motorola modem.
Despite others complaining on here, I've found antietam cable to be excellent with their internet service. Tech support is top notch and local. Any problems, they work with you until it is resolved. I've never had them blame my computer for any connection problems. My last call resulted in a new cable run from the curbside box to my home; which resolved the problem I was having.
The internet has only gone down a couple times and usually as a result of some nationwide backbone problem and not a local problem.
If I were to grade them on a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being outstanding, I'd give them a 10 without hesitation.
p.s. I don't work for Antietam Cable or any of its affiliates.

Thanks Yoss -- any particular Motorola modem? Any particular spec. it should meet, etc? As you can tell, I am very ignorant of cable 'net stuff.
Thanks.

I'd get whatever the newest incarnation of the Motorola Surfboard is. It'll cost you 75-100 bucks.

Whatever they have on the shelf, Snoopy. I think they both sell 5101 models or something. I'll check when I get home to see what my model is. I think they're around 70 bucks or so. But stick with the Motorola, they're pretty reliable. I think the spec is DOCSIS 1.1, but you won't find a modem that doesn't meet the current spec for cable transmission.
I'm not sure if www.myactv.net has any info or not for new subscribers... but check it out if you want. I know there's a FAQ (frequently asked questions) on there.

My only advice would be to go with your own modem. I had a problem a while back, but it turned out the be the modem. I was still using the old Motorola 4100 Surfboard I got when I first signed up with Antietam. It was giving me problems. Before I went to Circuit City and bought a new one, the tech on the phone was telling me that there was a problem with the cable in my house. They were going to charge me to have someone come out and shoot my cable with some kind of test device. I guess a time domain reflectometer or something similar. I figured before I went through the cost of that and taking a day off from work, I would just replace the stupid modem. It made a huge difference. I don't think I've been knocked off line since. It was getting to be an everyday occurrence.
One of the things I like about the newer style of Motorola Surfboard modem is that they put the power converter on the outside of the unit. An external power converter sends DC to the modem. It makes it much smaller and a lot cooler. My old 4100 had AC going right to the modem. It would get very hot. I don't know if that was something it always did or if it was something associated with the problems.
External power is always better.

Antietam Cable doesn't charge a fee to come to your house to diagnose a problem, only to install brand new lines or drops. At least they never charged me to check the cable to the wall that my modem is hooked to.

Um....about those cable modems...
If Ant Cable sells Motorola any reason not to just buy it from them -- from what I have heard they will sell you a modem for ~ $80? Would they be less likely to blame any problems on your modem if you buy it from them?
I have has AC come to the house to look into fuzzy TV reception -- for free -- and they also ended up replacing the line...after 3 visits.

That's probably a fair price Snoopy. I don't think they test the modem before they give it to you, but they'd probably be less hassle to replace it, if it was DOA out of the box.

If it's a new one, there's no real reason not to buy it from them. That's the same price you'll pay at Circus City anyway. BUT, if it's a used or a rental rehash (does Antietam even rent modems like Comcast, etc.?), pass on the Antietam provided modem purchase.

They told my wife it is a Motorola Surfboard for $63 with tax included. I doubt she asked if it was new -- that's is the assumption, though. If it is refurb I think they have to state that.
Thanks all!

Unless you're an online gamer or heavy downloader, your speed is plenty fine. I'm both, have a slightly slower connect and I'm still good. The question is, what speed service are you paying for?

We are in Greencastle. And I looked at the bill today and we are paying for high speed. I think about about $50 per month. I don't do any gaming. Son does but never heard him complain.
