Some friends and I became interested in searching out and exploring the subterrain of Washington County last summer. It was not only loads of fun, but very educational in learning more about the area's geography. After having sniffed out a few good caves in the area and getting my interested going, my progress came to a halt for lack of additional information. I already know of quite a few locations in Wash. Co, but am hoping to find hard leads to other caves in Allegany & Garret Counties, as well as portions of West Virginia. If anyone knows anything about them--or knows of anyone who used to sport in such things--please let me know!

NO!! Don't.

I kinna think I want to, but am scared.

My dad, uncles and their friends have talked about going in caves when they were young. The stories were boring, but gosh, I couldn't do it. I've seen some "caver" bumper stickers around here. Good luck!

The Descent rocked! Good movie. biggrin.gif

I've gone cave exploring before and it's a good time, but not for anyone who is remotely claustrophobic. Also, this is never something you should do alone.

The cave we used to go to was near Elkins, WV. We would walk to the cave when we'd go camping out there. However, that area is almost 4 hours away. I'm not sure how far out you're willing to go.

We walked on the canal this afternoon and noticed three separate caves which weren't blocked off. We didn't explore so we have no idea how deep they might go, but you may want to have a look.

The first two were pretty close together. Go to the Dam #5 parking area (it's on Dam #5 road) and walk west on the towpath about 1/3 of mile. You'll see the first cave about halfway up a cliff to the right side of the path, just after the canal dumps into the Potomac for a stretch (this is just when the path starts to curve around these huge rock outcroppings, but before the path turns to all concrete). The second cave opening is a very short distrance further west on the path, and it's right next to the path once it's turned into the elevated concrete section. Like, you could climb right up into it from the concrete.

The third cave is maybe 3/4 mile further west from the elevated concrete section of path, about halfway between the "Two Locks" area and the "Four Locks" section. It's on the other side of the actual canal from the towpath, just a few feet abpve the canal level, in a hillside about 40 feet to the right of the towpath. Since there's no water in the canal you could just climb through a few sticker bushes to reach it. It looks pretty small, about 2'x2', but then I guess you can't judge a good cave by the size of its opening. biggrin.gif There were ruins of an old mill pretty close to it, and they looked very cool too, though they were fenced off to discourage exploration.

Good luck!

Be careful exploring caves unless you know what's in them. Years ago, my Dad and uncle were exploring some caves on the WV side of the river. They went in, my uncle first, only to find a large interior room...which they soon found out was filled with buzzards. Do you know what buzzards do for self-defense? They puke on you. Imagine...buzzard puke!!!! wink.gif One got my uncle on the top of the head. Eeeeewwwwwwww....

Oh my god, I had no idea. That's hilarious! ...and spooky too.

Yeah, I will not be caving.

I'll do some research. My nephew does caving all the time. He got me to go on 2 trips and I had the time of my life. I will say this though. My nephew has been to Whitting's neck (took me) and to a cave down off the tow path on the WV side. Besides the mud look I had a field day.
