I cannot friggin believe what passes for art anymore. Why can't I get a gig like this? If I knew you could make a living doing what this (literal) jerk is doing, I would have quit work and holed up in my "studio" with plenty of elmers, glitter, construction paper and astroglide a long time ago.

That first example looks like a magnified pic of carpet fibers and the 2nd one looks like bacteria colonies growing on a slide! The discouraging thing is.......this probably sells a lot better than actual art!

That's just my opinion, btw.............................................

i'm sure he'll be making money hand over fist on this... wink.gif

What did he do with the money his parents gave him for collage?

He spent it on carpet, glue and glitter and called it art. What a guy. blink.gif

Standard fare @ Art Shows I have seen this year at UofMD, Frostburg, & Univ of Pittsburg. Not saying I liked it but I have a relative pursuing a Bachelors in Fine Arts . At some of the shows he has invited me to I have seen a range of subject matter, technique, and media. At the U of MD there was a student dressed in white, his skin was also covered in a white makeup. He looked like the Tin Man's hue. There were markers and a sign to write or draw on him. It was called "Performance Art". The next entry had x-rays a woman had found in a dumpster. It was her statement for idenity theft, she could not believe the personal information she gleamed from a dumpster. My relative had submitted an oil painting. Anyway, I was taken aback at the diverse styles, choices, and talent. But I am not surprised anymore, there is a huge range out there.

RE: the initial post, not the art I love. Not for me.
There is a lot of good and bad art out there. Or maybe art I may not understand. There have been some mixed reviews for local shows in our tri-state area, along w/ some great looks at new artists. On a good note, The Arts Centre at Martinsburg, WVA has kicked off a good season. They have some great classes. The current drop-in studio for artists is now meeting once a week. Established artists have an opportunity to meet and practice their drawing technique. It is a free studio evening which artists love. They critque and compare styles, network.

I used to hang around the MD Institute of Art in Baltimore (in a professional capacity), talk about your weird stuff. But I loved going into the live modeling painting classes. I admit it... i'm a perv.... lol

Great Post Yoss. biggrin.gif We all need a laugh. (I am sure you r always a gentleman.)
Oh by the way, to any budding artists, The Arts Centre does not have a live model at their Drawing Group. Did not want anyone to be mislead.

The best part of this whole thing.

Washington County residents are going to help pay for this crap, with the start of the Artsy Fartsy school in downtown.

Unless of course one of the wonderful developers of downtown are going to pay for it, whatcha think CIG?

Think Mr. Demming will pitch in?

"No Child left behind" will trump all arts programming as it is a Federal mandate from the current Administration. The Arts will be squeezed in so in actuality I am not sure how it will gel. "NCLB" is pretty explicit w/ academic bench marks & teaching to the tests. KUDOS to anyone who can squeeze anything else in. In this day & age I am not sure how it will happen. It will be curious as their hands are half way tied to benchmarks. An arts school w/ the backdrop of "NCLB" is a huge task. Other Schools for the Arts did not have this mandate when they opened. Some adapted, others did not. This is a different time or era for an Arts School. The jury is still out re: how it will fall together.

BACK ON TOPIC: I love the arts and am constantly amazed. Museums, galleries, and area arts councils are popping up all over, or reinventing themselves. PA & WVa are seeing a surge in a range of fine arts. In MD, The Allegany Arts Council is partnering w/ FSU...... Graphic Design is on tap at the museum. Check out the WW l & ll posters at the Wash Co Museum of Fine Arts. smile.gif

Are you kidding me NCLB is a joke. It`s dosen`t work. My wifes niece is a school teacher in inner city Balt. The kids are held behind 2 years then they have to move up to the next grade reguardless of how smart they are. Then when they reach 16 years old they quit school. Yep it works just fine.
Ok I`m finished, Sorry to go off topic.

wink.gif smile.gif U r right on the money. NCLB does not work. NCLB may have to be considered, as it may have some impact on an arts school curriculum, since it is part of a public school system. I was not advocating NCLB merely stating that the Arts School will have a lot to figure out in a short amount of time how or if it needs to meet those requirements. I am in no way promoting NCLB, just underscoring it is federally mandated, & influences all public schools. I worry, as I do not think it will help an arts school. They have enough to worry about making it a quality arts program. They will have enough hurtles.

Sorry guys, back to an arts topic:

biggrin.gif Visited two galleries in Marinsburg WVa today. There is a lot of hand blown glass and pottery.
Also, went inside The Marinsburg Arts Centre. Saw work from local artists. They r attempting to work out a floorplan, i think it will result in a new community-arts classroom, and limited studio space at the center. They rehabbed an old post office or govt building, it is very simplistic. But a nice space for community art. Great idea for empty downtown buildings. Really like the concept of rolling an empty govt building into gallery & studio space. Creates a good vibe in a depressed part of town. smile.gif
I saw oil, arcylic, collage, printmaking, and some graphic design pieces.

I agree that NCLB is not working.

I wish there was a way for the public schools to be modeled after Montosorri (sp??) learning principles. They really instill a love of learning in the kids. I know the classes are very small too, but it would be nice if the public school kids could start with some of their ways of learning. It really works. But, only a few can afford the price. Sad.

Kids are getting burned out in kindergarten with all that's expected of them and all the homework. sigh.

Yeah, and my friend told me that she had to wake her son up to do his homework since he would hardly get through dinner without falling asleep! What's happened?

I don't know what's happened.....I do know that it's done more harm than good, whatever it is. My oldest was in knindergarten before they started all this nonsense, and she has done much better in school than any of the others and has a love for learning that the others don't seem to have. One of my kids had a teacher in WV who rebelliously refused to work with nclb, and he does better, but still is not very fond of school and learning. And none of the kids seem to learn any history anymore, or any REAL reading or even the use of reference materials. It's as if the joy of discovery and learning is being deliberately deleted from the school curriculums. Does that sound completely weird?
