I am trying to get a friend placed in education somewhere in the Frederick/Washington County/WV area. Does anyone know if the Washington County schools have a job description similar to "instructional assistant" where the employee is the second adult in the classroom and assists the teacher and works "one on one" with the students? If so please let me know the approximate pay, requirements, etc. Thanks!

Well, unless you're a certified teacher your pay is almost nothing.
momsapilot
Even if you are a certified teacher, the pay isn't great! BTW, did you guys see where DC is letting over 500 teachers and 200 admins go as od 12/31? Maybe they will come out here!

Just what we need teachers from one of the nations worst school systems! (If you're referring to the actual District)
txexpatriot
Yeah, but the teachers in the district are great at excuses for non-performance! They'll fit right in here with the Wash Cty School Board nuts...

LOL biggrin.gif
momsapilot
Oh wait. They're from DC, not Baltimore. 6 of one, half dozen of the other probably.
txexpatriot
Did ya notice they cannot get anyone to run for the school board? Try calling to get an application or information to register to run...ha,ha....no one wants to tell you what to do--any opinions on this????
WVDragonlady
I wonder if Councilwoman Penny Nigh would be able to help you.?She SEEMS to have the best interest of the town on her agenda.
I wonder if somebody already on the board would even want to help you get the info?
momsapilot
It's been a running joke in our house that I should run. Tx and I could do it!!! Let's take over!! However, the measely pay isn't worth the headaches. Ugh!
txexpatriot
Let's do it! Heck, we can't do any worse than calling school because it might snow! Keep the little linoleum lizards in school where they belong! Let the rest of us do our jobs..

I'm assuming that both of you work, so the extra pay could be nice, plus the meetings are usually after business hours, right?

rolleyes.gif A few parents in my neighborhood have been filling in for teachers out sick or on vacation and I think one of them had to take a 6hr study or something like that to be a substitute and another parent works in the cafeteria and they have told me that they get $50 per day.

If I were a teacher and had went to college to get a degree in teaching, I don't think that I would be very happy about people getting in through the back door to teach this way. Plus, our kids are being taught by non teacher qualified.

This is only what I have been told by some of my neighbors who do this at the school and some of them go into work everyday. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I do see this happening.

Also, there are the parents who help out at the school to see that Little Johnnie or Susie get the good grades. This is okay I guess since this is the way it is in life it seems, but it's not exactly fair to the parents who can't be up the schools as.........to see that their child gets preferrencial treatment.

I'm probably going to be in trouble for saying this, but everyone knows it's true. Some parents even buy the teachers expensive Christmas gifts and such for their kids to give to their teachers. This should not be allowed either. unsure.gif

Linoleum lizards...I guess that would be a better floor covering analogy than mine!!!! laugh.gif

Bluebirder, unfortunately, anyone can be a sub as long you have a HS diploma. You get paid more if you have a degree. I don't think cafeteria workers get that much, I think it's $5.75 per hour from 10 to 1 usually. At least with subs, the teacher does write out the lesson plans, so the sub is just cook booking it as a glorified sitter. I do know many former teachers who sub, though.

As to volunteering, there may be some brown nosing parents out there who may get their way, but the 6 hrs a week in the classroom that I spent didn't help my daughter not get a C in writing! And presents....at the end of the year all of us pitched in to get a watercolor painting of our teacher's home. She has a beautiful old house and was just about in tears. Unfortunately, many classes aren't as cohesive as ours. Christmas should be a pitch in as well, rather than who can buy the biggest and best.

I never remember a sub actually teaching the class, she'd just give out worksheets/work that the teacher had left for us to do.

If a substitute only earns $50 a day and he only has to have a high school diploma no wonder this county
has such a low performance rating. And just wondering........how do you "see this happening" if you don't
volunteer at your local school?
txexpatriot
Just go to the web site of Wash Cty School Board...it tells you how to get an application and if there are vacancies it gives the pay scale...
WVDragonlady
Ya know, I've always wanted to be one of those caffeteria ladies. biggrin.gif Looks like fun work and I get up before dawn now anyway so the hours wouldn't be a problem. You only work school days and have the summers off..hmmm......... blink.gif
BlueBirder
Hi likeittight......I see this happening as my next door neighbors who are also close friends go do this almost every school day, unless of course they're just making this all up for some reason. wink.gif
