My internet keeps going in and out. That's how I keep getting stuck logged into here. I called Comcast and they said that they didn't detect me online. They had me unplug my router and then plug it back in. They saw me online then, but couldn't help me further and said I'd have to call my local Comcast and their office hours ended at 5pm.

I asked to speak to their supervisor because I thought it was crappy that they couldn't help me further. The bitch came on the phone nasty so I decided right then that I'd switch to Verizon. I've been wanting to switch anyway.

I signed up for Verizon online at work, so the wheels are already in motion, but today I just realized that my computer room doesn't have a phone jack. The next room, my bedroom does have a phone jack but not on the shared wall. I really don't want to pay extra for them to install another phone jack. I guess I'll have to talk to a Verizon person to see what my options are.

Can you give me a head's up on my options so that I'm less likely to be taken advantage of?

I use a wireless phone jack extension for direct tv. I assume it will also work on internet. You can get them at radio shack for about $40.

Radio Shack Wireless Phone Jacks

You just have to be able to plug in the DSL filter. DSL requires filters on your phone jacks, it has something to do with separating the data line from the voice line.
WVDragonlady
buy 50ft of phone line and run it from the bedroom to your computer room. you can tack it along the base board so the critters won't get to it.

DSL should work the same as cable. you will have a modem that you plug the phone line into instead of cable. Not sure how verzion modems are but embarq you need to configure the modem to bridge mode. I would definitely dump comcast if I could for verizion FIOS.

Just this week I switched my mom from dialup to Verizon DSL. She ordered the kit and everything was in the box with easy to understand directions. I spent more time hiding wires and making it aethstetically acceptable for her than I did actually getting the DSL working. And I got a free mom-cooked meal out of it. wink.gif

Are you guys actually using these wireless jacks for hi speed DSL or just suggesting it? I ask because I use them to have my old Tivo call home for data once a day and the performance is terrible. It drops calls and when I plugged a regular phone line into it to check it, there was a lot of static. I guess distance between the two units matters, but I'm just curious if somebody successfully uses these things for DSL.

off topic - WVD, I usually just ad block out your huge sig pics, but that "girls don't poop" actually made me chuckle a bit. biggrin.gif

Heather do you have a laptop also? If so use it to set up the DSL in the house in a room with a phone jack. Get a wireless router and attach it to the DSL Modem. Once everything is working then you can take the laptop off and you will be fine. All you would need then is a wireless card for the desktop computer. I hooked up my friend this way. Her modem and router are in one room and not connected to a computer. Her computer is in another room. The only reason you need a computer attached is just for configuring it once that is doen you don't need the computerr.

Heather,

Wear something really slutty and sexy and hope that the Verizon person is a man or a lesbian. Also don't wear that hat you wore to Duffy's.
theBurninator
if you really don't wanna install the jack, youre gonna hafta take dragon's advice and run phone line all over your house. lol. you get this little thinger that plugs into the jack... and it lets ya plug 2 lines into one jack... they make these lil tack thingers, so if you have to run the line, you can stick it to the baseboards or whatever, so you dont just have random chord all over the place.

just so ya know, i had verizon dsl for less than a year... HATED it. whoebver suggested the "repair" method... i'd try that for sure.. always fixes my connection... also, unplugging all the chords/cables from you rmodem/router... waiting 60 seconds.. retarting...

Their iPod stuff is outrageously priced. I need to start reverting to wireless stuff because I foolishly acquired a glass desk that doesn't hide behind the scenes stuff.

Thanks Yoss. Will look into that.

I would be surprised if the problem you are having wasn't with your router. I think that's why the people from Comcast didn't want to help you. I'm not sure switching to Verizon will really help. If the issue is router related, you will have similar problems with your new ISP.

If the problem is fairly constant, you can try to connect your cable model right to the computer taking the router out of the equation. Unplug the power to the modem for a couple of minutes. Once you do that, you will need to go to Start>Settings>Network Connections and then right-mouse click onto your Internet connection and select "Repair". This will refresh your IP address an DNS settings.

If you do this and are able to go for a substantial amount of time without any problems, the problem is most likely the router.

My router isn't old though. I HAVE been increasingly having probs with the service though. It's getting worse. In and out, in and out.

I've wanted DSL for awhile though and this was just the straw/camel/etc.

I've done the repair thing tonight several times and it never worked. Settings keep telling me that low to zero connectivity is afoot! When I disconnect the router's wires and reconnect, success for enough second to find out Heath is dead and then NOTHING. Eventually it stuck though. Seems to act right when beofriend is around, (he's so not pagan and wouldn't appreciate that joke!)

You underestimate the mischief of a kitten, Dragon! laugh.gif I tell my mom this all the time: "you haven't had a sprite, young kitten in 10 years!" All her cats do is prowl outside and sleep in the windowsill. When's the last time you had an inside kitten? biggrin.gif dry.gif

Dumping Comcast ASAP. I'm glad this didn't act up just a short while ago when I was applying for a new job/paying my bills/registering for school and buying books! :phew:

My router isn't old though.

Just because the router isn't old doesn't mean it's not the problem. Why are you using a router? Do you have more then on PC? It's worth taking the router out of the equation if for no other reason it is something you can do without having to get a third-party involved. You can hook your PC right up to the cable modem.

Also, how are you connected to the router? Through a cat-5 cable or via wireless? Also, what's the make and model of the router? Not all are the same.

I'm using a router because after I left dial up, everyone said it was of the utmost importance that I have one. I have only one pc. I don't know a lot about this chit, dang it.

I'm not wireless.

Do you know about bifold doors? Are you single? :smooch:

That was a joke! biggrin.gif I'm happily attached. smile.gif

I'm a lost cause. I've promised myself I'm going to invest in computer classes at school just to keep up with chit so's I can help myself and my parent's computer stuff.

My internet hasn't screwed up since a couple days after I was on the phone with comcast. I don't think I do well with female supervisors at comcast. dry.gif The bitch.

My experience with Verizon so far has been, amazing. They are 20 times worse than Comcast.
Verizon. In total, I have been on hold for, literally, hours. Sometimes after holding for, say, 20 minutes, I'm then re-routed back to a main menu to start all over again and then sometimes, I'm told - sorry the department I tried to transfer you to is closed OR we're having technical difficulties, can you call back later?

I've literally talked to at least 8 different people from Verizon. I've ordered service twice.

Since I've ordered and re-ordered, I've been told the following:

"you ordered Fios" I did not.

"you cancelled your order" I did not.

"you don't have an account" I do.

"your address is wrong" It was right.

All this AFTER I received their modem in the mail. wacko.gif Is Verizon run by the government? laugh.gif

I'd stick with Comcast if I hadn't learned Verizon was half as cheap.
Idiot

No, the government just wants to give them retroactive immunity for something they say they didn't do but can't say what it was. rolleyes.gif

Is there a homegrown, grass roots ISP 'round here? :sigh:

Don't you have Frontier Phone company where you're at? They cover a lot of the panhandle. One of the computers I use at work has Frontier DSL.
Heather
I have never heard of it, Yoss.
Heather
Bastard Verizon phone recording called me two seconds after I switched my mobile phone on today, after work: "Sorry to inform you, you are not in an eligible area for DSL Verizon ser-...".

I harbor hate for Comcast and Verizon. How nice of you, after all the crap I've been through, to issue a computerized notification to me. I kinna wonder if it wasn't all my complaints that issued that finale.

I haven't encountered such disregard for paying customers since...peoplepc.

What's up with internet service these days. I guess there's no cheap, fast connection? Where's the pay-for-what-you-get deal, SMan?

Glad I don't have all that problems with Verizon DSL. smile.gif
I had them ever since they came out.

Usually I just do the verizon sharing where they can accress your
computer and they always fix my problems. If ever one does arise.

I had a little problem a few weeks back, seems the cable company needed to do some work on the main tie point outside. They did let us know about it, but I didn't think it would be a problem getting back on-line after the repair work was done.
Problem was the local office did have the MAC address of the Modem but still ran me through the loops because the helper on hand didn't know how to do the connection, tho still no connections.
Next day called in to a different support person, which did the MAC address thingy, but still not on-line. I saw the Modem lights go off then all back on making connection.
I did get back on-line. My problem was I forgot about the router/firewall.
When making the init connection after the MAC address of the Modem is install at the local station I need turn off the puter, router/firewall and modem. The turn on the modem and wait for the on-line light, then turn on the router/firewall and wait for its lights to state on-line, then the puter.
Some equipment needs to be turn on in order fashion.
