Full Version: faux fans?

I don't know what to call this thread. I might not have labeled this correctly. I'm not into sports and I just really don't like sports. But I have a question...or maybe it's more like a poll. It's poll-ish. Heh.

I've been thrown into sports situations and atmospheres in my 31 years, so I've developed a loose loyality to certain teams for certain reasons. My dad was always a Green Bay packers fan and a New York Yankees fan. He's been a fan of these teams since he was playing with dirt and pulling girl's pony tails. Grandma has the pictures to prove it!

As the years passed, I acquired some clothing items with these logos only because you need a ballcap to run to the grocery store or just because a big, comfy hoodie is comfy and warm when you're cold. Yet still, sometimes I got fiesty with it and if someone asked me which team I was rooting for, I'd talk smack or w00t for "my" team. Meh, who cares though?

Cut to now. Apparently there is a rule set in stone amongst y'all sports fans that you are not allowed to like an away team unless you are from there. wtf? This "rule" or rather, test of integrity, is shared by my boyfriend, his hombres, and most every Htown sports fan. wtf is up with y'all? Is this universal and what are the precise rules?

Scottie says, "if you are a Yankees fan, you are either from there, a girl or you're on a bandwagon." That's actually paraphrasing. He infamously says something else, but I can't remember it exactly.

My dad has been a fan of The Pack and The Yanks since he was wee little! "No good."

Scottie got me a pale, pink Orioles hat for Christmas. wacko.gif Scottie is in love with the Orioles because he grew up in Maryland. I'm still dumbfounded because I'm not a sports fan, I already have my token bad-hair-day-Yankees ballcap and I am still not understanding why I suck because I'm a Packers / Yankees / Terps fan?

Your thoughts. Keep in mind, it's poll-ish.

This isn't a new concept with the homer sports fan. I've encountered many of them since I'm a MD lifer and only like one local team.

I have "my teams" for various reasons. The Orioles because of Cal (you had to have a hero playing LL ball) and that they are local, the Cowboys because I liked their colors (and hated Redskins colors) as a kid, Miami Hurricanes college football because I got tired of the Penn State fans in elementary school and since they were playing Miami in a bowl game that year I got with Miami, and finally, the NY Rangers because I started digging hockey shortly after they won the '94 Cup so I hopped on their bandwagon. I'm not ashamed of the Rangers bandwagon hopping because I've stuck with them through the decade + of stinkiness since their Cup win.

You like who you like for your reasons. Once I've got with my teams, I've stuck with them. If that pisses off the die hard homers, I could not care less.

Oh, and before somebody comes in to crap on this thread, I'll go ahead and say "IT'S JUST A GAME!!!!!".

I agree! I can't wait to show Scottie that one other person agrees with me. laugh.gif He will laugh heartily, I'm sure.

This is funny...I was just talking to Gary about this last night!

I've come across some "faux Redskins fans" recently, especially since Sean Taylor's passing. They're all like, "Brother didn't deserve to die" and that. So they buy the jersey and the ribbon and the hat.

The same thing can go for rock groups I'm finding too, but it's kinda funny...on another forum that dragon and I frequent a friend of mine posted asking if there were any Deadheads out there. A lot of people said things like "I bought a shirt when Jerry died." laugh.gif Yeah, faux fan!

On the team colors subject...when my oldest son was little, he like the Chargers lightening bolt on the helmet. So because of this they became his second favorite team. They still are to this day and he's in his twenties now. wink.gif

No your not alone Heather. I've never been a big sports fan myself either( I'm more of an outdoorsman) . But I've been a faithful Minn. Vikings fan for over 40 years, why ? because I always thought they had the coolest helmets. I love them horns. I've never been to Minnesota and I don't ever plan to get there. But they'll always be my favorite team.
Idiot
I'm a homer for the Kentucky Wildcats but KY has never had any big time pro teams, at least not since the ABA. My favorite sport to play while growing up was football. The first pro game I ever watch on tv, I guess I was about 13 or 14 so it was either 1964 or 1965, was between the Giants and Cowboys. The Cowboys were losing something like 24-3 at halftime and I started rooting for them just because the announcers were saying they didn't have a chance. Bob Hayes ran the 2nd half kickoff back for a touchdown and the Cowboys scored like 45 points to win the game. I've been a Cowboy fan ever since. I may be a faux fan but I've been one for 42 years.

Phew. Thought I was crazy for a minute. Thanks for your input.

By the way, he has this one ballcap that I don't recognize. I asked about it today. It's for an away team! I went ohmy.gif

"Oh but it's for when I go golfing because...lalala." I didn't hear anything after the word "golf."
Mcgee
I don`t have a favorite team in sports like bball or football. I only have Nascar hats and hunting hats.

Heather ask him if it`s a Tiger Woods hat. laugh.gif or does it have a Nike check mark on it? rolleyes.gif

No, it was a "Titans" hat. I forget from where, but it wasn't God-Blessed Maryland.

I HAVE A NIKE HAT THOUGH! I've had it forever! It's just white and very fitting and has a black Nike thing on it. I honestlyy thought it was a neutral thing and I have kept it in my car for bad hair episodes. It tucks into my back-passenger seat like a glove and ....

Anyhow! Everyone has always envied my hat? It has always fit my head nicely, or so I thought, until this thread...

I've stuck with all my favorite teams my whole life with one exception being the NFL. I have pulled for certain teams because I liked specific players, but I don't think that counts.

MLB- Toronto Blue Jays fan since 1985 (I was 1 yr old)

NFL- Miami Dolphins fan since early 90s: I always loved Dan Marino
Washington Redskins fan from birth to 1993 and Gibbs' return to present: I was a diehard Mark Rypien fan who was devastated when he was no longer a Redskin. I was still a Redskin fan, but I lost a lot of enthusiasm after Rypien was gone.

NBA- Washington Wizards/Bullets

NHL- Don't really care

NCAA- Maryland and Florida

NASCAR- Davey Allison, Jeff Gordon, Boris Said

When I was younger, I was tempted several times to switch over to the Dolphins because their colors are cool and they have a cute fish marine mammal on their helmets. tongue.gif
Naomi
I never really cared about NHL until I went to a live game. Man, it was so fast and exciting...the puck flies around and hits the glass and the guys skating around beating eachother up...it was awesome! laugh.gif

I still don't really keep up with it, but it's totally different being at a live game, and I'm always happy to hear when the Caps win!
samy0
MLB- O's and Padres
NFL- Skins and Chargers
NBA- Bullets/Wiz
NHL- Caps and Calgary
