Officers search Del. McKee's home
By ERIN JULIUS
erinj@herald-mail.com

HAGERSTOWN — Law enforcement officers armed with a search warrant went to the home of Maryland Del. Robert A. McKee, R-Washington.

It could not be determined Thursday why or when the search warrant was issued.

A Washington County Circuit Court judge acknowledged Thursday that he signed a search warrant for the search of McKee’s home.

Law enforcement officers later conducted the search, Washington County Circuit Judge W. Kennedy Boone III said during a telephone interview Thursday afternoon.

Washington County Sheriff’s Department deputies prepared the search warrant, Boone said.

The night Boone signed the search warrant, investigators and Deputy State’s Attorney Joseph Michael attempted to find an out-of-county judge to sign the document, but none was available, Boone said.

Boone could not provide a timeframe as to when the warrant was signed, and couldn’t discuss what probable cause was presented for the search.

McKee did not return two messages left on his cell phone Thursday.

A woman who answered the door at McKee’s home in Halfway late Thursday afternoon said the delegate was in Annapolis.

He was present for the House session Thursday morning but didn’t attend his committee meeting in the afternoon.

A TV crew that tried to see him in his Annapolis office early Thursday afternoon was told he wasn’t there.

McKee, 58, has served in the Maryland House of Delegates since 1995. He is in his fourth term representing Subdistrict 2A, which includes parts of Washington County outside the City of Hagerstown.

He is on the House Ways and Means Committee and is chairman of the Western Maryland delegation, which is made up of lawmakers from Washington, Allegany, Garrett, Frederick and Carroll counties.

McKee serves as the executive director of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Washington County.

Two thoughts immediately came to mind when i heard about this. One involving money, and the other I'm hesitant to actually say at this point, although I would imagine many people are having the same thought. If so, this could get very, very ugly.

Friday, Feb 15, 2008 @07:30am EST

1198-1-1223b2008-02-15-1203065413.jpgHAGERSTOWN -- NBC25 has learned that longtime Maryland Delegate Robert McKee is under investigation by the Washington County Sheriff's Office and federal authorities.

Sources close to the investigation say police carried out a search warrant against McKee after responding to a complaint. They would not get more specific, and they stress that McKee has not been charged with anything.

NBC25 made several attempts to contact McKee yesterday. He did not return our phone calls.

McKee has been a state delegate since 1995.

A lifelong resident of Hagerstown, Delegate McKee has been extremely involved in local athletic organizations and children’s charities and is currently the executive director of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Washington County.

More developments are expected later today.

i think its sort of foolish to speculate at all at this point... no charges, no arrest, just someone filed a complaint, and a warrant was issued. that could be anything, and very well may be NOTHING. i hope for his sake it's more towards the "nothing" end... this is washington county, and we can't HANDLE the SCANDAL. poor guy. now, if i find out he did something really crummy, then i'll be upset.

it could be ANYTHING. no need to think the worst of the poor guy until we get the story. maybe he's not done anything at all... neighbors or anyone could've filed a complaint. they didn't say anything was seized from his house, or that there are charges pending... and i think if it had been something of a perverse nature, don't you think the person who complained would have come forward to the media? i think its kind of rude to assume he did something inappropriate with children involved. thats like seeing someone get pulled over and saying "they must have drugs in the car!". i think all of our brains have been warped by the glorified media circuses revolving around a few bad apples...
maybe he did do something sleazy, maybe not... but it doesn't do much good to accuse until we know what the deal is... or at least what the warrant was FOR.

You're right, it is a bit childish. I'm still not going to be the one pointing fingers.

I'm not in law enforcement, but I would imagine that you have to have some pretty good proof of something illegal to get a search warrant to a private home. Can't do that on a complaint alone, I think.

BREAKING NEWS: Delegate McKee Expected to Resign Today, Sources Say

Reported by: Pieter Bickford

Friday, Feb 15, 2008 @11:30am EST

Delegate_Bob_McKee2008-02-15-1203092153.jpgHAGERSTOWN, MD - NBC25 has learned that Maryland Delegate Robert McKee is expected to resign from office later today.

He is currently under investigation by the Washington County Sheriff's Office.

Sheriff Doug Mullendore would not release specifics, but he confirmed that deputies are responding to a complaint.

Sheriff Mullendore also stressed that McKee has not been charged with anything.

The FBI is assisting in the investigation, FBI spokesman Rich Wolf told NBC25.

Deputies carried out a search warrant at McKee's home in Halfway on February 5th. The contents of that search warrant have been sealed under a standing order from Judge Fred Wright.

A spokesman for Governor Martin O'Malley says the Governor would act quickly to replace McKee based on the recommendation of the Washington County Republican Central Committee. The committee will have 30 days to pick a replacement.

McKee has not responded to several attempts to speak with him.

A lifelong resident of Hagerstown, Delegate McKee has been extremely involved in local athletic organizations and children’s charities and is currently the executive director of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Washington County.

A national spokesperson for Big Brothers Big Sisters told NBC25 they had not been contacted by the authorities but are now in the process of investigating the matter.

The treasurer for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Washington County, Trina Johnson, said she was "very concerned and surprised" when told about the investigation Friday morning.

More to follow...........

WOW, he is known as a really nice guy in the nonprofit community. He has been a great advocate for the disadvantaged and disabled, as well as having a good business sense. It is sad to be colored by such accusations. Reality is that the Feds are involved so that makes my head spin. Since the investigation is still on-going, I can take the rest of today and just think of his good works......WOW, I am sad. Do not know anything. Maybe it will come out that it was some less consequential infraction. I hope he is innocent.

Ouch: well that was what all the hints were leaning to, I guess. It was kind of out there.
How sad for the victims, their families, his family, & Del McKee. It is tragic when any child is compromised/abused. Of course, we all wait for the evidence and final word before judging. That was my point, thanks for saying it betther than I did. It is a good reminder to wait for the facts. Knowing of his good works, I know I was sincerely hoping for the best.

Sad for the community. If true, it is a betrayal of trust.
communityhagerstown
Mr bent, 10 years in CPS and probation in Vegas, I know. It is still sad. I can not get hardened to it. Sad on many counts. Yes, mr bent I am guilty for holding judgment until I had the facts. We do not know for sure, so I stand guilty as charged. Still waiting for confirmation.
I will think about the possible victims, their families, Del McKee and his family. And the many, many, many victims I have known....I remember rainy nights, yup it can rain in Vegas, waiting for police backup while on a case of child abuse, stemming from pictures...........So Bent, u r right, i do have a lot to think about. No i am not promoting McKee and his good works, just choosing to be quiet until I read tomorrow's paper. Just not going to yell about it until I have the facts.

In reality, it makes little difference what I feel or say. This is just the Herald Mail and you. Not the police station or Courts. Obviously, we all hate and do not sanction child porn. You do not have the monopoly on morals, intellect, and public good. We all have backgrounds, perspectives, and lot at stake.

I just don't understand child porn.

Is it a "sickness" or just plain sinful?

Md. delegate resigns amid FBI probe
Washington Co. authorities searched Republican's home last month
By Bradley Olson
Sun reporter
2:34 PM EST, February 15, 2008

A state delegate whose home was searched by authorities last month announced today that he will resign from office.

Del. Robert A. McKee, a Washington County Republican, said that authorities searched his Hagerstown home Jan. 31 and seized his personal computer, "including images that are available on the Internet."

McKee, who also announced that he would resign as executive director of Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Washington County, said he intends to enter treatment and has instructed his attorney to cooperate with law enforcement officials. He did not specify what kind of treatment he would seek.

"For me, this is deeply embarrassing. It reflects poorly on my service to the community," he said in the statement. "My primary focus is to get well and stay well. I know this can happen only with the support and prayers of my family and friends and the help of professionals."

Rich Wolf, a spokesman for the Baltimore FBI office, said a cyber crimes unit is assisting in the investigation.

"We were asked to provide assistance, and we're doing so," he said.

McKee, who was active in numerous youth athletic and civic groups in his district, was one of the legislature's leading advocates on children's issues and had co-sponsored a bill this year that would deny child sexual predators the ability to earn good-time credits on their prison sentences.

He was in Annapolis yesterday but did not attend the morning session at the State House and was also not in his office. He did not return phone calls to his home or office today.

Del. LeRoy E. Myers, a Washington County Republican who shares an office with McKee, said he didn't know anything about the investigation and would not comment.

The Republican caucus held a meeting this morning, but numerous delegates would not say what they discussed.

House Minority Leader Anthony J. O'Donnell said he had not spoken to McKee and had no knowledge about the investigation other than what he had seen in published reports.

O'Donnell said he found it "troubling" that McKee's house had been searched but urged caution before the details emerge about what he's being investigated for.

"It would be inappropriate to speculate," he said. "I won't do that."

Obviously, no one sanctions or supports child porn. Some may choose to be quiet until the full story is out. Nothing wrong with that. We all react and process differently. By Saturday we will know. Of course, we all agree Child Porn is a horrible crime with horrible ramifications. Life is good as there is no disagreement: Child Porn is a crime & unacceptable....waiting for the facts.
