I never knew that other states had official Tartans. And now we do too. I'll have to try to track down some or at least some ribbon wink.gif biggrin.gif

West Virginia Shawl Adopted as Official State Tartan On March 6, the Legislature adopted House Concurrent Resolution 29, designating the West Virginia Shawl as the official state tartan. Many Americans can claim Celtic roots, and, as a result, more than 20 other states have adopted official state tartans. According to the resolution, a majority of West Virginia's earliest settlers were of Celtic descent.

The pattern for the West Virginia Shawl is based on a previously undiscovered shawl found at the Daughters of the American Revolution Museum in Barboursville. The official state tartan is based on this design and contains the following colors, each one representing a different aspect of the state:

- Scarlet for the state bird, the cardinal
- Yellow for the fall colors
- Blue for the rivers and lakes
- Black for the official state animal, the black bear, and the state's oil and coal resources
- Green for the state flower, the rhododendron, and the state's meadows
- Azure for the sky
- White in order to include all the colors of the United States

YEAH, Looks good, West Virginia is rocking the tartan. It is a pretty one, glad they got one of the nicer plaids. I remember my school uniforms, I loved the green plaid but hated the gray. I have worn a lot of plaid, but it was mandatory. (Life's struggles at age 10) biggrin.gif

Nice plaid there!! I'll have to google later and see if I can find out what MD and PA have.
I like stuff like that. Thanks!

Well at least I found out what a tartan was today.

AGreed! eeeewwwww! kinda depressing.
WVDragonlady
looks to me that MD was going with the state colors of yellow and black. and then the red white and blue of the USA. I bet it wouldn't look so bad on a larger piece of cloth. say maybe a nice kilt on some good looking male legs...... biggrin.gif

md's color key:

* Red, White, Black, and Gold for the Crossland and Calvert arms, which appear quartered in the Maryland state flag

* Navy Blue for the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis

* Blue and Azure (Light Blue) for the waters of the Chesapeake Bay

Doesn't look like PA has a state tartan yet.

But, I found some on my husband's side. I like the Turner tartan best.
