MARTINSBURG, WV - Other than Charleston, the Martinsburg DMV is the busiest location in West Virginia. But Tuesday, customers were turned away.
Normally at the Department of Motor Vehicles, you have to take a number and wait in a crowded room. But that's not the case now thanks to a wild deer.
"I was actually in the office and we just heard a big crash, and it was a deer!” recalls one DMV employee.
The deer crashed through a front window, ran past a small office, and leaped over some safety rails.
"It's a pretty high jump. He took a couple of attempts,” the employee adds.
After that, it was back to a small office space, where animal control officers and sheriff's deputies were able to catch the deer.
Officers brought the deer behind the building. It’s still marked with deer hair and a trail of it going back. Officers say it was not seriously hurt and they were able to just let him go.
Fortunately, the accident happened at 5:00 in the evening, when the DMV was closed.
But, until the mess is completely cleaned up, customers are forced to either wait or go to Charles Town.
"I thought I got here early enough, because I didn't see any cars here, but now I know why there are no cars here. So, oh well... What can you do?" says Marvin Hutchinson, a customer.
The DMV asks that you be patient as the smell of bleach lingers and their employees work hard to get back to normal.
"We're cleaning off all the chairs, the counters, and everything to get the deer blood and hair off of them," explains Cheryl, a DMV employee.
Meantime, customers need to understand it's a "hairy" situation.
Employees of the d-m-v are hoping to re-open Wednesday, but they're not sure if the cleanup will be completed by then.
They advise customers to call 1-800-642-9066 between 8:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. to find out, or go to the Charles Town office just off Route 9.

I'd love to see the surveillance video from that one.
