We've already made plans with our "refund" and I was just wondering what everyone else is gonna do with theirs.
We're going to the beach for a few days. Camp at a state park and take lots of beer and other necessities and have some fun. Hit Rehobeth and play tourist for a day. Definitely hit Harpoon Hannah's for some seafood and beer. And whatever else we cook up when we get down there.
So, what cha gonna do with all that money? ( insert sarcasm here).

From the IRS website:
Q. Is my Stimulus Payment taxable?
A. No. You will not owe tax on your payment when you file your 2008 federal income tax return. But you should keep a copy of the IRS letter you receive later this year listing the amount of your payment.

Stimulus Payment Schedule for Tax Returns Processed by April 15
Economic stimulus payments will be issued according to the last two-digits of the main filer's Social Security number. People who use direct deposit also will be among the first to receive the payments starting April 28. Paper checks will be put in the mail starting May 16.
DIRECT DEPOSIT
Last two SSN digits: Payment will be transmitted by:
00 through 20 May 2
21 through 75 May 9
76 through 99 May 16
PAPER CHECK
Last two SSN digits: Payments will be mailed by:
00 through 09 May 16
10 through 18 May 23
19 through 25 May 30
26 through 38 June 6
39 through 51 June 13
52 through 63 June 20
64 through 75 June 27
76 through 87 July 4
88 through 99 July 11
People who file a return after April 15 will receive their economic stimulus payment, but probably about two weeks later than the schedule shows. A return must be filed by October 15 in order to receive a stimulus payment this year. See the online calculator for an estimate of the amount you will receive.
A small percentage of tax returns will require additional time to process and to compute a stimulus payment amount. For these returns, stimulus payments may not be issued in accordance with the schedule above, even if the tax return was processed by April 15.

On second thought it looks like mine may be going towards a new TV. My 4 year old POS 32 inch LCD HDTV is on the fritz again. The last time I fixed it with a $250 replacement part and now it's doing the same exact thing. It's a known defect but of course the manufacturer doesn't agree. But if it's gonna fry that part every 2 years I may as well get a better TV while I've got the money. Looking at the 40 inch models that Best Buy has on sale.
Of course with my luck whatever I get is going to die on me in about 2 years too... just after whatever extended warranty I buy expires. Isn't that the way they're designed these days?

Do you mind if I ask what brand/model it is? I'm hoping to pick up a 32" HDTV this summer, and I want it to last awhile. I was looking at a Sony that was ~$1100 at BB and CC.

BMIC - 2 months ago, I picked up
this Samsung 40" LCD at Circuit City for $999. Great picture and a built-in HD tuner, so if you have Antietam Cable, you can watch the major networks (NBC, CBS, ABC, Fox, MPT) without the box hooked up.

It was an Insignia 32" LCD TV but I'll have to look up the model number when I get home. Apparently it has a couple of capacitors on the power supply that are undersized and burn out after about 18 months' use. When that happens the TV won't come on (the capacitors help with starting the picture tube), though for a while I could get it to work by warming up the back of the TV with a hair dryer. It comes with a 12 month manufacturer's warranty, naturally. If I was really good at fixing Printed Circuit boards I could've tried to replace the capacitors for about $20, but instead I bouhgt a new power supply for just under $250.
SMan I've been looking at Best Buy. They have a special on Samsung HDTVs for $500 off. Think I was looking at that same model for the exact same price just yesterday.
SMan
May 2 2008, 03:14 PM
Yeah, the two stores swap back and forth on sales, plus each will price match, if you have a store preference. I went with CC because they had nicer tv stands (I needed one) and cut me a big break on a display model stand, plus a $23 gift card for my trouble of waiting while they looked for the new, boxed stand the computer said was in stock.
CC's extended warranty price was ridiculous, but BB's was reasonable (like $150 for 3 years). If I would have bought at BB, I might have taken the extended warranty.

LinkSounds like Sony will lower their prices to about what I was already expecting to pay for a Samsung. Though if Samsung responds by pricing theirs lower, I still won't be buying a Sony. In any event I've got to wait 'til my gub'mint check comes in.
