I recently checked the unclaimed property list the Comptroller's office maintains and found my paternal grandmother listed. She's been gone 15 years, my dad 10 years, leaving just my sister and I as the next of kin on that side of the family. The whole thing makes me kind of depressed thinking about my dad and grandparents. Anyways...
Has anybody ever gone through the process to get the property? Just curious how difficult it was and any other experience with the process. I've read the instructions and it appears to be a royal pain in the butt (death certificates, proof of relation) so I'm debating whether to even bother.
Thanks.

I have not. But logic would state, that is it all proportional to the "value" of the property. Now figuring that out is the trick. I saw one website that will tell you if it is "greater" than $100, but that is about it.

Yeah, the comptroller's site gives nothin' but claim # and name.
How do I even establish (on paper) relation to a grandparent? Dad's birth certificate showing she was his mom, then my BC showing he was my dad?
edit - I did some more checking online and it appears to be some kind of account with MetLife. I guess I'll call the Comptroller next week.

Yes I've gone through this. You'll need to have 3 I.D.s ( I used my Birth cert. Lic, and SS card) and you're going to need proof that Your Grandma was your Grandma. It wasnt' that hard for me because it was mine to begin with. Your's may be a bit more in detail due to extended family. If you can find an Obit from your Father and your Grandmother it will make things a lot easier. They give you a Phone # to call, From their you'll get forms sent to you. Don't get excited it's going to take at least 4 to 6 months to get the money. Mine was a loan that I paid off when I was 20 years old, that I big time over paid and the company got fined for wrongful charging customers false insurance on the loans that I purchased. Anyhow, They had to add interest from the date I paid them off until the date the court's was done with their trial about 2 years worth. I paid something like $300. to $400. dollars for this insurance on the loan and got a little over $3800.00 back from them. That was about 5 years ago.

Is it a web site? If so I'm sure the link is somewhere but can somebody please re-post it?

Oh yeah... there's that property tax refund check that the dolts at WC made out in both my ex-wife and my names even though we were divorced and I have a quitclaim deed she signed, plus she has legally changed her name so there's no longer anybody who uses the name they used, so I couldn't deposit it.
Not worth the hassle of trying to get it corrected, so WC gets to carry that on their books. Heaven forbid they just reduce my next property tax bill by the same amount and save the cost of printing checks and mailing them. That would make too much sense.
Otherwise nothing else.

The comptroller's office told me the amount is around $1200. After having to split that with a long lost uncle that I haven't seen in 15+ years and can't find, that will leave about $300 each for my sister and I. After death certificate costs and my time/effort to do the paperwork and leg work, I'm leaning toward not bothering. We'll see. I guess I'll discuss it with the family when we get together for the holiday this weekend.

I suspect that's the case with a lot of the things they have in their database. Stuff that's just not really worth the hassle one would have had to go through to collect it.
