Full Version: Dunkin' Donuts yanks Rachael Ray ad

QUOTE
Does Dunkin' Donuts really think its customers could mistake Rachael Ray for a terrorist sympathizer? The Canton-based company has abruptly canceled an ad in which the domestic diva wears a scarf that looks like a keffiyeh, a traditional headdress worn by Arab men.

Some observers, including ultra-conservative Fox News commentator Michelle Malkin, were so incensed by the ad that there was even talk of a Dunkin' Donuts boycott.

''The keffiyeh, for the clueless, is the traditional scarf of Arab men that has come to symbolize murderous Palestinian jihad,'' Malkin yowls in her syndicated column.

Rachel Ray is an Al-Qaeda mouthpiece, I guess. rolleyes.gif blink.gif

Boycott away. The line for coffee will be shorter for me.
Idiot
She was cool about it at least.

ok this whole thing is just plain STUPID. And Faux news is just plain goofy to begin with. Women every where should find scaves just like that one and wear it just to p!$$ of this malkin female. next thing ya know, people with dark hair ( just like those terrorists rolleyes.gif ) will come under the gun of malkin and they will have to dye their hair another color if they're to be considered good americans. rolleyes.gif rolleyes.gif give me a break.
BMIC
What? Would you prefer that she wore a swastika instead?
PHISH
That's a poor comparison. A swastika is a clear symbol of hate. A scarf is not.

That's less outrageous than you think it is, Dragonlady. My daughter has long, black hair; and in this silly little town filled with mostly Germans and other very light complected white people, the town cop decided to trail her for awhile and harass my family because she looks so different from the other children. The school board finally had to ask him to stop, citing the differences between her academic abilities and those of the other children...................(yours truly got a kick out of that.....no one here was willing to believe that a dark haired child would make honor roll and leave THEIR children in the dust!!!) I won't let her do anything to change the appearance of her beautiful hair. Not a thing.

Before the swastika was a symbol of hate, it was just a Germanic symbol designating the sun, or solar heat. I think everyone should just stop looking for reasons to flip out.

as for the person who's responsible for the ad to be pulled to begin with: it Faux news. nuff said.

It's not just a scarf, it's a ceremonial head scarf used to identify with the Palestinian terrorist cause. In the middle east it's considered as much a symbol of anti-semitic hatred as any swastika.

It has been worn by various anti-Israeli left-wingers as a sign of sympathy for Palestinian terrrorists, often around the neck as Rachael Ray is doing in that picture.

If I did go to Dunkin Donuts this ad would not discourage me from going. IT's fashion plain and simple and I am not offended.
SmokeChaser
Agreed, no offense taken here, some people just need to take a pill and quit talking just to hear themselves talk. IMO she should be wearing alot less. laugh.gif
Patton
Major Over-reaction.

Where's the ACLU when you need them. :shrugs:

Michele Malkin is a wing-nut (emphasis on the nut). This is just another way of distracting gullible people from real issues. Because scarves and flag pins are so very important to what's going on in the world today. rolleyes.gif
SmokeChaser
I'm all for vigilance in this day and age, but this is way too extreme. It’s almost like saying we should boycott whatever brand shoes the shoe bomber was wearing or let’s ban all U-haul trucks since that’s what was used in Oklahoma City. And too pull the ad, get real, I doubt that terrorists will ever attack us on a baked goods and coffee level.
Snoopy
A swastica is easily and universally recognized. If you had shown me this ad and asked me to find the offending thing in it, I would have been totally stumped.

I'm just curious to know if she realized that her "fashion statement" was in fact racist. I'm tempted to accept the idea that she's just clueless, but then again I'm not 100% convinced, either.

Totally agree. Just goes to show you want this one woman thinks about, apparently, constantly. I mean, malkin doesn't have anything better to do? What is it with people who just grab at straws to create hate?
Ithlilian
I was going to say exactly what BMIC said. I bet she didn't know what the scarf was, just thought it looked nice. I bought some Korean or Vietnamese vest at halfway park days, I wouldn't know if it was the traditional garb for prostitutes or if it was really used as a rug, I just thought it looked nice. But yes, if she was wearing a swastika people would make a HUGE deal. It's nice that it means sun or whatever, why don't you try wearing it out in public and see what happens, YOU can explain to people that it is a symbol for the sun.

Muhammed, allah, jihad...durka.

Way to make fun of other people's religions B, doesn't Jesus have a problem with that, or is Christianity the ONLY religion.

I hope people know I'm kidding when I make comments like that...

I would have thought someone at Dunkin Donuts would've researched this before releasing the ad, but then again maybe they did. wink.gif

Thanks a lot guys, now I have the theme song running through my head...laugh.gif

This scarf is such a non-issue. I think it's cute. I didn't realize that it was un-PC to wear scarves now; but then again, we still have yahoos wearing gigantic pants, belted to stay 8" below the tops of their boxer shorts. So what do we know around here about fashion...
communityhagerstown
Cute scarf, I am surprised no one has started selling them on line. "Rachelwear" or something to turn a humorous buck whlie getting a laugh. I am sure some business person or one of us could come up with a gimik.

Rachel has said before in the media, she just wants to sell coffee, make a buck.

Agree with Dragon, at first glance who would notice. One rule in advertising is that you need to have the product jump out at you. It would be curious to hear from the AD team, maybe they are bewildered too.

Love the reference to Team America World Police. Says it all. laugh.gif

Researched what? How would the average person know what to research? How many forum members knew, w/o being told, that the scarf was some kind of political symbol? Anyone???? Maybe I'm a dummy, but I damn sure would have approved the ad as nothing looked wrong to me.

Researched= watch the ad and make sure it was politically correct.

Just because you and I and most of the members here didn't know anything looked wrong doesn't mean nobody else did, apparently Michelle Malkin did.

She had no idea at all about the scarf BECAUSE the wardrobe department of the advertising agency DECIDED what she should wear in the commercial....

Careful with those details, Heather, people will be able to identify you when you're out in public now, by seeing the fashionably draped t.p. trailing in your wake while you walk through the mall.... laugh.gif

polar bears because it's white t.p., right? would pink toilet paper signify Breast Cancer Awareness?
communityhagerstown
Actually Griz, I thought the same thing, "Here wear this, it accents the gray blouse you have on". (which it does)
A lot of theater, television, and props depts use scarves to flatter a person on camera, your eyes are drawn up to the product.

A scarf can also hide unflattering angles or frame the focus around the product.

Or more than likely, "Here Rachel, that gray tee shirt is boring as heck, take it up a notch w/ a scarf."

DANG, I want one of those scarves now. Hmmmm
BMIC
Yes it's most likely a simple faux pas. No less shocking however.

These days advertising agencies need to be aware of the implications of all sorts of things that have deeper meanings to various cultures. Especially considering the current rapid Islamization of Europe, they're going to have to get educated about these kinds of issues that touch on middle eastern and islamist peoples.
communityhagerstown
Yup, that stylist or producer is lacking a liberal arts (well rounded education) degree.
