I was at one of the chain steakhouses yesterday and the first thing the waiter said was no tomatoes for anything because of this.

The Food and Drug Administration is expanding its warning to consumers nationwide that a salmonellosis outbreak has been linked to consumption of certain raw red plum, red Roma, and red round tomatoes, and products containing these raw, red tomatoes.

Longhorn?

I read somewhere today that McDonald's is pulling all tomatoes from their sandwiches... Guess no more Big & Tasty for me!

Longhorn?

Yeah, I think that was it. I was in Frederick and it was the one over on 85.

Dangit, I was just getting ready to buy some fresh salsa at the grocery store this afternoon. I had a hankerin'.
SmokeChaser
Yeah, they told us the same thing at the Longhorn here in town yesterday too.
jelsey
Buy them fresh, wash the hell out of them with dish liquid, rinse, eat, enjoy.

You gotta die sometime, might as well be happy while doing it.
PandorasBox
What about that fruit & veggie wash? Would that work? I've never used the stuff before but just a thought...

Apparently, cooking them is the only sure way to get rid of the bacteria.
siriunsun
That's one reason why I grow as much of my stuff as I can. Any bacteria will be from right where I am, and I am much more likely to have immunities to it.
Udmas
Glad I don't like tomatoes.

Thanks for the information. Salads are so popular in warm weather, so I guess it is time to really scrub or tend to that garden out back. Hopefully, we planted tomatoes, will have to check when I get home. biggrin.gif

You gotta CHECK to see IF you planted tomatos?

Good Lord Woman - you need to spend more time outside!

If you didn't, call me, I'll even deliver to Greencastle!
jelsey
OK, I just checked your profile.

Was thinkin' you were in G-Castle.

My bad.

Guess I'll eat the gas money and deliver to Hagerstown, you poor, forgetful little thing. laugh.gif

I heard a FDA guy say washing may not do the trick -- the bacteria can get inside the tomato.

So, I'm guessin' that the process of canning the tomatos will kill the bacteria?

That's my understanding.
PandorasBox
rescession, sky high gasoline prices, tornados, infectious tomatoes - geez - what's next???
WVDragonlady
I just had 2 fairly good tomatoes this week that I got from a local farmer's market. I didn't ask where they came from. I do know that their early(late april) strawberries came from Southern va, and that their watermelons came from Fla. And just recently I believe that the cantalopes are from the carolinas( not sure).
I'm guessing that his toms didn't come from the same supplier that the restaurants did. unsure.gif
I feel fine so I'm not worrying.

I think if any of us got a hold of a bad mater, we'd know it! wink.gif

It's box art from one of the releases of "Attack of the Killer Tomatos".

I think the FDA release said that tomatoes on the vine were safe to eat.

As an alternative, check some of the local farm stands around if you really want some tomatoes. There are a few Mennonites that grow 'em in greenhouses around here.
BoldWoman
Cherry tomatoes, grape tomatoes, tomatoes sold with the vine still attached and homegrown tomatoes are likely not the source of the outbreak.
Dodge Man
It don't matter to me where the tomatoe comes from I am still not eatting them. YUK.
Ithlilian
Yes, washing them doesn't help at all, you have to cook them to remove the threat. Wasn't that already said at the start of the thread, maybe I'm getting it mixed up with a news story I heard...
Udmas
Hey, there's a nice cat video link in the picture thread.

oops, never mind
