What's Facebook?

Like Myspace, but supposedly more sophisticated. It originally catered to the college crowd, unlike myspace which caters to everyone.

Ok, then I'm not on Facebook.

I was on facebook to get to know people in my college classmates. Once they opened it up to everyone I stopped. Myspace is for 12 year olds in my opinion, and I stopped that a while ago.

People are leaving comments on my myspace that they've bought me as a pet and to click to see how much they think I'm worth. Someone told me that it's to get you to sign up for a facebook account. I don't use myspace enough to consider yet a second social account anywhere else.

Nope. I would never create any of that sort of account with my real life identity by the way. Too many reports of people losing their jobs or not getting hired, in some cases simply for HAVING a social networking account.

That's why I deleted my myspace. Why risk it?

It is kind of sad, though, of course. People cannot simply be real in this day because there are so many people out there with criminal tendencies and who try to throw their weight around. Employers really need to allow their employees to do and say as they please when they're not on the clock. But alas we must make do with the cards we've been dealt. Which means posting anonymously on message boards and never using your real name in the virtual world.

The online world is a form of writing though, so anything that you can say can be tied directly back to you. It's not considered hearsay because it is written down. With the girl being denied teaching certification and companies firing people for blogs I will keep my complaining to myself. I feel no need to have a page where friends and family can talk to me, they have my phone number. If you are on the sites to meet new people, go to a meeting, a downtown event, a club, I wouldn't want to meet people online anyway. Just my opinion.

I met my second wife online. I definitely know what you mean. *shudders*
OTOH, I've made some decent "friends" online, though I've never gone so far as to meet them in person, excepting that second, now ex-, wife.

I liked some people I talked to online when I played FFXI but I never felt the need to call them on the phone or meet in person, I feel weird about it. Just like I feel weird talking on headsets to people when playing games. I like that it's impersonal. If I wanted to talk to real people I'd make some real like friends

I don't mind talking among my guild-mates in game. Our Kinship leader in LOTRO has the coolest accent and he's just such a goof. We have a lot of fun. But yeah with "strangers" it kind of ruins it.
MMO gaming is pretty cool, I think. I got my little brother to sign up too, so we see each other in game all the time even though he's a 6-7 hr drive away from me.
And P.S. I know it would be a shock to many of those reading, but we NEVER discuss politics or religion. Just how many of what kinds of Orcs or Goblins we're going to go kill next.

I noticed that also. The talk is mostly about game related things, or chit chat, it never gets serious. I enjoyed that. I wish it was free though.

Well, LOTRO costs me a lot less than Netflix, so I can't complain. Though a paid expansion is coming in the Fall. Still, I doubt it's gonna break my bank. When I compare it to my Antietam Cable bill for TV and internet, it may as well be free.

Yes, cable and internet seems to be up to around $90 now.

Which server do you play on BMIC? I'm on Landroval. Have a 50 burglar and 50 lore-master.
I've also met several guild mates (mostly from EverQuest) since 1999. They're just normal people for the most part, nothing to be afraid of. I know several folks that have met their significant others online as well. Now, Xbox Live folks on the other hand... that's almost an entirely different breed!
As for social networking, my profiles are kept private; only friends I've approved can see them.
