WTF? Hopefully the headline was just written to garner attention. Look at the map... it would be right between Robinhood Medical Center, the new hospital, and HCC. BRILLIANT!

Mount Aetna Farms east of Hagerstown could be developed into prison

Three City Council members oppose plans for Federal Detention Center

By DAN DEARTH (dan.dearth@herald-mail.com)

HAGERSTOWN — A federal prison and residential housing units are among the possible land uses that have been discussed for Mount Aetna Farms, a 220-acre property that sits east of town between Hagerstown Community College and Robinwood Medical Center.

One possible use for the land could include the construction of offices, convenience retail and residential components, according to a letter that was presented Tuesday to the Hagerstown City Council from NAI The Michael Companies Inc., a real estate business that has been retained by PNC Bank to sell the property. A research and development facility could be an option as well.

"Another alternative we have considered is to find a federal user who might locate a remote facility from Washington," the letter said. "We have spoken with the Bureau of Prisons to determine if Hagerstown would be an appropriate location for another Federal Detention Center."

David B. Wills, vice president of NAI Michael, said the land is selling for about $11.5 million. It is NAI Michael's job to sell the property to anyone who might be interested, he said.

"It is totally up to the purchaser to obtain any required approvals for their use of the property in accordance with local ordinances," Wills said. "The property is mostly zoned residential suburban and part of the land is zoned agricultural. Any other uses would require the approval of local authorities."

Washington County Planning Director Michael C. Thompson concurred with Wills, saying the property's zoning is set primarily for residential development. Any other use would have to be discussed among local officials. He said he wasn't sure whether the property is contiguous with the city, but, if that were the case, the city could annex it and would be responsible for providing a majority of the utilities.

Although the property is in the county, the letter solicited a response from the city leadership to determine appropriate uses for the land.

Councilwoman Kelly S. Cromer declined to comment on the issue, and Mayor Robert E. Bruchey II said he couldn't discuss it because he had not read the letter from NAI Michael.

The members of the council who had read the letter, however, said they were opposed to bringing another prison complex - three state prisons are just south of the city off Sharpsburg Pike - to the Hagerstown area.

"Not in my lifetime," Councilwoman Penny M. Nigh said.

Councilmen Martin E. Brubaker and Lewis C. Metzner said the idea to use the property as the site for a research and development facility or for office, residential and retail space was more realistic.

"As for prisons, it's not appropriate," Brubaker said. "We need a tax base."

The headline was to sell papers. As you can see in the article NO one things this would be a good idea. However, a federal prison would be a nice employer for the area. I know a few folks that work in the one in Cumberland. Almost all of the correctional officers have a BA or higher and starting salery is over $40,000 a year. Friend of mine works in the addictions unit and has been there 5 years and is making almost $60,000. Also know a teacher that was making over $60,000. Would bring more middle class jobs to the area. Maybe it would be a better idea to put in out by 70. On which ever side that one of the development don't get approved. Federal prisons are a little different than State. Those folks come from all over and hardly ever want to relocate to the area of the prison.

Yeah I figured that after I had read the article, but even the notion of another prison around here is ridiculous. What are we, the prison capitol of Maryland?

As for being a nice employer, the same case could be made for other ideas such as a R&D or technology park, or, taking RMC and the new hospital into consideration, some sort of biotech park for companies wishing to relocate or expand here. There are a lot more positives with those ideas than another prison literally sitting in someone's backyard.
SmokeChaser
Yeah, not to mention that it would be a FEDERAL prison, so there would be nut jobs from everywhere. And all close to a hospital, college and an elementary school. Smart, real smart.

Nice headline, they will do anything to sell papers. Toss in an attention getting headline and a half@$$ article and we'll get the whole town riled up again. At least the pressure is off Cromer for a day or two.

Completely agree but someone needs to go out and get those people to come here and open up business. The Federal govt is offering to come here, I don't think that line is very long.
Mcgee
The Eastern shore has more than enough room for another prison.
But we are the dumping ground for the not wants of Maryland.

Build it and they will come.... and their visitors.....probably hit the outlets and get some grub while they are here. I like it....

Gee......maybe it will be put where everyone doesn't want another shopping center!!!!! Like I said before, if you don't want a shopping center then you will end up getting what you get. I'm soooooo done with the bul....sh.....t.
communityhagerstown
While I see the point, I do not think it is as simple as saying: If you do not want a shopping center it will mean a prison. Again, i appreciate the point, I am not very worried. Govt, citizens and approvals move slowly for our area. Look at the hospital saga.

,,,,Geezz, the idea of PRISONS R US does come to mind though. cool.gif laugh.gif

Do you have info that's not in the article, because I don't see where it says anything about the Federal govt offering to come here.
golbblog
I hope this never happens.

No it doesn't but we as a City should be pursuing it instead of more shopping. Our wonderful City Council and Mayor in their haste make us a shopping capitol have been missing big chances. The Federal Government has been expanding outside fo the DC area in case of attack and have facilities in Martinsburg and many are going to Winchester. The FBI and FEMA to name a couple. We should be trying hard to lure a Federal agency to come here and I don't mean with a prison. But small minds at all level of local government in this county only think in terms of shopping and distribution centers.

I will take a prison over more shopping. Even better would be a place that I can use my college degree, but I don't see that happening...

No prison.

Exactly! This city is turning into a zoo for sad white elephants. Hell, we breed them here!

I'm sorry I must be missing something. Are you saying elephants shop a lot? Or that white people do? Or albinos?

I was hoping you would figure it out and let me know.

A white elephant is a valuable possession which its owner cannot dispose of and whose cost (particularly cost of upkeep) exceeds its usefulness.
Udmas
Tell the truth now, did you google it. laugh.gif I might have heard something like that before.

But anyway, good post golbblog, now that I get it.

Ithlilian
Yes, wikipedia. I seriously didn't know what it meant.
golbblog
You hear the White Elephant term quite a bit in real estate.
