This forum is, hopefully, a place for free flowing conversations and debates about things that matter to each of us. We have discussions on here that cover every imaginable topic. Our conversations range from where and how to go to the bathroom when you're camping, to issues involving personal rights, education and, of course, politics.

Sometimes we get pretty passionate about those things. Sometimes we get so passionate that we think we can say anything. Some people think that being anonymous releases them from the norms of social interaction. Some people just hit the add reply button way too soon.

We don't have many rules here. :waits for the booing and loud heckles to stop:

Mostly, we ask people to follow our guidelines. The guidelines are just that - guidelines. They are a broad path to follow when you come here. Our guidelines can be found in the tab at the top left of the forum home page.

As moderators on the site, we try to judge things on a case-by-case basis. We try to listen to and respond to complaints and denials of wrong doing with equal fairness. The reality is, this is the internet. The social norms are...different...here. We caution the thin-skinned to toughen up and the mean-spirited to lighten up.

That said, there are some thing we won't tolerate.

Words that George Carlin likes to pepper his routines with shouldn't pepper your forum posts. Carlin's infamous "seven dirty words" list is our "don't use that here list." If you don't know the words, google it. (But don't post it for your fellow forum members. Let them find it on their own. And don't argue about the last one on his list. It made the list. happy.gif)

Racism and intolerance won't be tolerated here. Those are ugly words and even uglier sentiments and they don't belong in this or any other arena.

And, finally, this is not the place to settle that vendetta you have with "_____:fill in the blank:_____." Got a personal beef with someone? Take it somewhere else.

Just a reminder. Now, back to your regular programming...
ModSquad
Bump, for those who didn't see it.
hagopinion
So all other words are ok, just not the seven bad words. Do you include the extra three auxilary words? I can't imagine fart or turd but the other one tw*t seems a little off color. I would also argue that these words were outlawed in 1972 and a lot has changed since then.
communityhagerstown
Was there a problem? the last few days have seen status quo, rather balanced or ordinary. People commenting on a variety of topics, some strongly but it is just opinions.
Most are coming off ok, the point is to entertain different opinions and that is happening. People have been good about it, or ambivalent, which is fine. I did not pick up on a uncivil vibe. Differences of opinion I did see. No active poster seems out of line or obviously trying to be uncivil. ..................

I think some people just like to complain about everything, especially when they don't agree with your position, just look at the Dems and the "fairness doctrine" for an example of this.
ModSquad
We've been dealing with some "behind-the-scenes" complaints which have gone as high as the publisher and corporate office. We're just trying to issue a reminder, in the gentlest terms, to play nicely.

There are of course other terms that may be deemed to be offensive. A good guideline may be, Would you use that term when speaking with your mother or grandmother?
Udmas
If people want to play those kind of games they should do it on the forums, if they have a complaint lets hear it.

"behind-the-scenes" complaints = gutless

I would not call my mother a liar or post it on line. I see what you mean Mr Mod. I can see comparisons, thanks for pointing it out. Would not have stopped to think about it. Hmmm, now I am wondering who is calling the publisher? I have ideas but no proof so I will not post. A year ago I may of been concerned with some postings. So I can not throw too many stones.

I strongly agree with Udamas on this cycle. It ebbs and flows, always will. But I thank you for being conscientious.

Agreed. GUTLESS

Agree Hag and Ud.

I was speculating on a male poster from yester year. I realize my vagueness might of been snide. I apologize, not referring to any active posters or recently active. I think I will slide out of this thread, it brings out the neg in me. This cloak and dagger stuff is not helping me. I will go repent. Back to books and movies for awhile. biggrin.gif
siriunsun
Why would anyone call the publisher??? No one has posted anything here that should interest the publisher. Now.....I am sure the cooperate office gets called all the time for all kinds of things, especially when people cannot agree to disagree and be mature......but why would the publisher get involved?
PhilPhanatic
I am afraid, really afraid, that Mr. Obama's operatives may have landed.

I have yet to receive a reply from Schurz Communications Inc., reference their PAC's activities but, seeing the direction and directives, does not bode well, for those who may have more conservative views.

This is upsetting on many fronts:

1. This is America, last I checked.

2. Many men and women have died to protect our Freedom of Speech, albiet, civilized and not demeaning.

3. This forum, in my short tenure, seems to be like, at times, a run away freight train, a funny one at that.

Please let us not lose sight of the reason we are here, to politely banter back and forth, without offending civilized normalities.

Cheers.

I don't remember seeing that freedom of speech had to be civilized. That doesn't seem very free.

That doesn't seem to be the reason a lot of people are here. Personally, offending civilized normalities seems fun, whatever that means.

Some people seem to be easily offended these days.

This is not America. It's The Internet. Read the site rules and you'll find our freedoms are limited on this site. These include, but are not limited to: no arguing with me, mandatory sending of love notes to moi and no utilizing the word "penis," because I have it copyrighted.

If you feel this is not adequate and subject to debate, I refer you to the squads that reign supreme which obviously are lesser than me, but if you want to swallow the blue pill I can't stop you! blink.gif

Seems there's a fair amount of gutless behind-the-seems activities going on. What does continue to amaze me is that the main perpetrators and co-conspirators responsible for the guidelines needing to be updated, throw stones from within glass houses and the whine and complain about others instead of bringing the debate to the forums just as you describe. The games they play and the cloke of secrecy they wish to maintain can only be described as one thing!

GUTLESS.

At a loss of words today Phil? As a new forum member you've racked up quite a bit of posts in various topics which would lead a person to believe you have quite the opinion, just as you previously observed about others. Nevermind doesn't seem like the normal Phil I know. You feeling ok today?

That's a nice gesture to offer some food you are stirring, but I just finished lunch so I'll have to take you up later on the pot of stirred stew. Anyway, that's not really related to what Udmas wrote about bringing the debate to the forum.

I am a little confused that you would continue to post to this thread but have nothing to offer with regards to bringing the debate to the forum with regard to what was previously mentioned.

Maybe the former moderator ModSquad would like to enlighten the forum on any "behind-the-scenes" complaining he/she may be aware of since they seem to know so much about the guidelines. I'm sure they have an opinion.

McGee, maybe you'd like to enlighten the rest of the forum about member screen names since you seem to know so much about BW/UN. They brought it on themselves right? Anyone else you care to share similar info on?

This is what you guys wanted right? A major league debate right? Phil, you constantly call me out and attempt to "bait" me into debates, so don't runaway now, you've got so much to debate about right?

this doesn't look or sound like a " major league debate". This looks like "pokin with a shit stick" trying to cuz trouble. what gives?

yes I know that it's a different thread rolleyes.gif . but there were no new posts until today after almost a week. why stir up the trouble?
so more complaints can be given to the paper or the mods and admin?

The same way others stir up threads that haven't had post to them for months at a time, and then someone posts to it that's what gives. Is there something meaningful you'd like to add?

All I'll say is this, I believe there should be forum equality. If one person goes down for something, everyone else who breaks the rules should be treated the same way. I don't think making an example out of one person is getting the mods/admins point accross. (Jels that wasn't directed at you.)

That's also what the forums are made for and considering it was Udmas who first brought up the issue of "gutless" as it relates to the statement the former moderator initiated, then this forum is just as much fair game for debate as the boxing ring.
