ModSquad
Spybot Search and Destroy

and

Ad-Aware

Also, do a deep scan with your Anti-Virus software (you are running anti-virus, right?).

if not AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition is a highly rated free anti-virus program.

Or do a system restore to when you know you didn't have it (assuming you're running XP).

edit: oops, sorry, you said you did a deep scan. It didn't offer to fix or quarantine the virus?

I got some crappy F-Secure free for a year when I switched to Wildblue and thats what I'm running. I've about had it with it. sux! I just need to go pa-ruse the isles and get something waaaay better than F-Secure rolleyes.gif

You're welcome. I hope you can fix the problem.

AVG, mentioned above is really an excellent free anti-virus, rated very highly by people that rate things like that. And, did I mention it's free?
WVDragonlady
I downloaded the the Spybot, and there were ...17!!!! things of crap on my puter! wtf?? ALL gone now whew!

So I take it I should next download the free anti-virus? Because that F-secure is just plain crap! mad.gif
momof3
FYI, the avg free is expiring the end of this month. Atleast .....that's what I keep getting .....pop ups reminding me I will not be protected after the end of the month and to order now.
ModSquad
WVDragonlady, go ahead and download the AVG. But before you install it, you may want to delete the F-Secure. If you have more than one anti-virus running, they tend to not get along well together.

You may also want to consider downloading and running Ad-Aware from my link. Often times Ad-Aware will pick up things that SpyBot missed and vice versa.

Did the SpyBot take care of your problem?

Momof3, did you install the trial version of AVG? There's a difference between the trial version and the free version.

Spybot got rid of all 17 pieces of crap. I'm downloading the Free anti-virus from your link, and I guess I'll be doing the Ad-Aware too. *sigh* such a pain in the azz. biggrin.gif

A friendly piece of advice, beware of "freebies" albiet spyware, or anti-virus. Most are just itching for you to down load them so that they can "infect" you. Been there, done that.

Cheers.

AVG, Spybot Search and Destroy and Ad-Aware from Lavasoft are all highly respected by security professionals and they are safe. Yes, some freeware is infected these are not. I have run the free version of AVG for years and finally made the switch to the paid version so I could use the firewall. Never had a problem and never had an issue with a machine getting infected that had updated AVG running. I can't say the same for some of the well known anti-virus programs.

Now about AVG expiring momof3, it could be the trial version or it could be that you have the old version. AVG released an new updated versiona few weeks back and will no longer update the old ones soon. The new free version is available at www.downloads.com

Modsquad and Tony........Maybe......But the little icon says AVG FREE Edition.
I know I have the 7.5 version and to quote the pop-up exactly "Updates for your current AVG FREE will not be available after June 25th. AVG 7.5 is being replaced by AVG 8.0 and you will have to upgrade to stay safe." Of course for a nominal fee of $58 for a year.

So could it be my 7.5 version? If so do I remove it and replace with what?

I have SpyBot and Ad-aware and love them. My Dad had the Computer Geeks come to his house and they recommended AVG FREE, Spybot and Ad-aware to him. So they are all good products. AND THEIR FREE..yippee... except AVG for me atleast.
momof3
Tony, thanks for the link. I am downloading it now. I wonder what happened I always download the updates but the message I kept getting was that I had to purchase the new one.

The computer Geeks told my Dad that he should delete his quarantine list on Ad-Aware once every couple months. Has anyone heard of this or do this?
WVDragonlady
someone explain to me in plain simple terms how these anti-virus programs work. Like, do they STOP virus' from getting on the computer? Or do they just detect virus' after they've done been placed on the computer. I never truely understood that part.

also, is there a very good firewall thats free? or does anyone know of one that I can pay for thats good? I'm looking to get a better one.

I'm tacking this on because I was reading the review and this was in it:

Besides the antivirus integration, other features disabled in the free version include the real-time Ad-Watch guard, heuristics scanning, the scheduler, and plug-ins. Although Ad-Aware detects and removes malware with ease, we hesitate to recommend it as anything more than a secondary detection engine considering that many free competitors offer more features and similar, if not stronger, levels of effectiveness.

so, do I really need to download this if almost all of the features are not in the free version? or would it be a great backup to the Spybot?

The only "problem" I had with AVG and that is that they should have just let you download the new version as an update. Glad you got it and hope you get it installed ok. It should solve the popup message.

Ok boy you ask a tough one here. The anti-virus like AVG will scan items as they come in and pick them up as a virus offering to quarentine them. It will also through regular scans pick up anythign that is already on your machine. However any anti-virus can be beaten if it is a new virus that has not yet been reported. Meaning a virus writer writes a virus and you somehow become the very first person to download no anti-virus will pick it up or will only pick it up if your computer starts doing things that aren't right. Does that make sense?

Spyware and Adware are two different things although very similar. Mya dvice would be to have Spybot and Adaware on your machine. Spybot will give you some realtime protection against some pretty dangerous things. It does it under the "immunize" section. But you still need to scan once in awhile.

Now Ad-aware may not offer the real time protection but it does look for and pick up things Spybot doesn't. I use the fee version and run it about once a week. More if you go to online file sharing or gaming site.

WVD, most anti-virus programs will stop viruses in their tracks. You should get a pop-up from your AV that says it deleted it. Sometimes, an AV program can't stop or even recognize a virus, either because it's new and the AV definitions haven't been updated to recognize it or just because it's so insidious that it can't be stopped.

As far as a firewall, most routers will stop malicious scans on your computer. But, absent a router, I run ZoneLabs ZoneAlarm fire wall. I've paid for the commercial version which includes a spyware checker and an anti-virus program. ZoneAlarm can be found at www.zonelabs.com. Oh, there is a free version that doesn't have a bunch of bells and whistles, but is very good, that the paid version has.

I stay away from Norton and McAfee, they are memory and resource hogs that can actually slow down your computer.

Maybe Tony can jump in here and recommend some others. Blackice used to be rated very highly, but I'm not sure it's even in business anymore.

I have used Zone Alarm free version and the full paid version. It is good and not as much of a resource hog as others. However in the end I switched to the AVG Internet Security version which has the anti-virus, spyware scanner and firewall. At the time I got mine I purchased a license for three machines for 2 years and it was around $110.00. I think it has gone up though.

As for other programs Trend Micro is pretty good, Trend actually has a free online scanner to check your machine as it is. I haven't heard too much lately about Black Ice. No one I know is running it anymore.

okey dokey! thanx! I'll download the adaware.

I'm just totally fed up with f-secure. piece of crap. don't use it. doesn't even clean what it finds on the computer even tho it updates all day long. dry.gif And I know I've got the settings right.

so, next time I'm out and about I'll check the firewalls. wink.gif
