OK, so I am pulling this out of the Waynesboro shopping thread, because ya'll have made me hungry now.

Being a life long resident, I'll always like Freddies. Quizno's are good, but they get expensive. I don't do Subway, Jarred pisses me off, LOL, and I never liked their stuff anyway. I miss the Silver Streak that used to be in the South End Shopping Center, yeah it was smokey, but they had good a GREAT steak-n-cheese.
ModSquad
Lots of faves, but Sheetz MTO subs are always excellent.

Il Castello up in State Line makes a great sub (as well as everything else on their menu). I love the fresh baked rolls.
Naomi
Here lately, I'm hooked on Jersey Mike's. They have a sub that reminds me of the ones I used to get when I was a teenager. The deli was owned by an Italian family and they made the best subs ever! wink.gif
WVDragonlady
Roma's here in Mart.
Mcgee
Gracies in Funkstown, also the one in the West End.
I cant remember the name but the sub shop is in Pasadina MD. The best steak&cheese subs around. It takes 3 people to eat a whole sub for 6 bucks.
Old Griz
The new Weiss on Rt 60 ... they have a sub shop in the store...
Fresh crusty bread baked constantly... real good bread
An amazing selection of subs and toppings ...
I love their Little Italy and they have roasted red peppers to go along with it.... try the pesto vinaigrette on this one
I am a big guy and a half sub is usually enough for me ... unless I am absolutely starving a whole one is too much ..
They also have a Sub Card.. get it punched for each sandwich... buy 9 get the next one free (any size)....
OH and the prices are amazing.... a half sub is only $4.79.... how can you go wrong....

I am from NY and I love a great Italian sub on good bread... this is the closest I have found since moving down here 10 yrs ago...

When I was in college - there was a place close to campus called the Chuck Wagon... Which we re-named in our drunken stupor - the "Yuck Wagon"... But I am tellin' ya - you could not touch there steak & cheese at 1:00 a.m.! Oh - just thinking about them makes my mouth droll! I used to like Hartle's Subs when they were in town... I would say K&M Grocery now since they are so cheap a 5 mins. down the road! Perfect quick fix for dinner! biggrin.gif

Best cold subs--no contest!--is Hartles on a side street off Maugan's Ave.

The Chuck Wagon! Or as we fondly called it, "The Upchuck Wagon." Yeah, that was THE place to go when you got those midnight beer munchies in college!

Ah, a food topic, now you're talking.

Love Quizno's, Freddies, Sheetz, Hartle's and Gracies. However, I love Rocky's (on the square) grilled chicken cheese steak hoagie.

What about Turtle's Subs? Are they still around? Those were yummy!

Yep they are still around, but I never cared for them too much. Especially the seasoned lettuce, my wife says I'm crazy. I almost forgot the Plum, good sandwiches there too.

Yes, "the bomb" is still used by white folks over 35 years of age. laugh.gif

Actually, isn't it supposed to be "da bomb" (correct English is not exactly a REQUIREMENT in the Tri-State).
SmokeChaser
Used by those under 35 too laugh.gif

If you think Turtles is good you need to go to Cumberland or LaVale and eat at D'atris. This is where the orginal recipe came from. Those guys are from Cumberland and tried to duplicate. Although it is good it is not nearly the same.

Plus they have small which is what Turtles sell and a large which is about 12+" long and has about a pound of meat on it.

Auugh! D'Atri's! ph34r.gif We heard the legends about that place and drove up to LaVale just to try it early this year. One of the worst cheese steaks we'd ever had. Cold, too much bread, really salty, cheese wasn't melted. I've heard from other people since then that it's gone downhill and is now only a shadow of its former self. I was bummed.

I like Turtle's Subs too -- that sort of thing was what I was hoping for at D'Atri's. There's a little place called Dolce on Frederick St. where my husband got a cheese steak about 9 months ago and he claims it's the best he's had in the Hagerstown area. I don't even know if there's still in business, though. Tiny place, nice people.

Blah... That's a long way to go for such a disappointment! Did you at least get to shop at Gabe's??? Oh - Cumberland... There is this little hole in the wall bar - Is it called the Gay Bar??? (please - no one insert joke here) Or something like that... Any who... they have the absolute best fried fish sammich I have ever eaten! And there fries - ummmmmmm!!!!!!!!

Sandwiches Mr.D's and Subs I would say Borthers Express or Byers Stop and Go.

Now the best subs ever was from Rocky Ridge Farm Market. 2ft long Ham and cheese or roast beef and they baked the ham or beef in the store. The price 6.99. I could eat that thing all weekend.

Yep... long time ago they were there, I believe.
ModSquad
I'm not sure if it's the "same" Hartles, they'd been in business forever on S Potomac until they closed. But I think the Hartles on Marshall St (which turns into Maugansville Rd, when it reaches the county) (right across from Western Hgts Middle School) is probably the children of mom and dad who ran the Potomac St location.
Udmas
I'll vote for Hartle's Subs.
Tony Campello
Freddie's was always pretty good to.

Rocky Ridge WAS in State Line, PA.

It's an Antique/Collectible shop now.

Damn.

The store in the West End was run by Beverly Hartle a sister to Gracie. When there dad closed the one on S Potomac st. they opened there own stores.
Gracie retired and Bev passed away not to long ago. But they are still the best cold cut subs in the area.

I've never been up there since they opened in the west end, I guess it always seemed out to the way from where I lived. Thanks for the tip McGee, I'll have to try them sometime.
Snoopy
The old Hartles...loved their cold cuts and their beef Flying Saucers. Yum!

Now, hard to find a good sub IMO. sad.gif

Yep... it's my understanding that there was a big fight over the "Hartles" name. Bev got it, Gracie didn't.

My two cents: Hartles does something amazing to their onions... that's the reason those subs are so good!
WVDragonlady
froggie! blink.gif NO onions!!. gives baby heartburn! wink.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif
Peanuts
The Firehouse Grill located in the basement of the Funkstown Fire Department has very good subs. They will make you a "Hartles" style cold cut sub that isn't bad at all (but still not quite a Hartles sub). Plenty of onions and hot peppers on it! They also have some pretty good soup and daily specials.
SmokeChaser
I've heard about that spot, I need to get over there and try it. I better hurry before the bridge closes, oh wait, I can just go around the other way and still support that business. LOL biggrin.gif

Why am I envisioning the flying cow scene from Twister?
Peanuts
A flying saucer is a sandwich on a large seeded roll (5 or 6 inch) and has whatever type of meat you want along with cheese and the fixn's.
Mcgee
Clever
The original Flying Saucer was a large round seeded roll with Roast Beef, lettuce, tomato, mayo, with or without onion. If you wanted a ham saucer it would have the same thing on it. Not a bad samich.

Don't waste your time or money eating in the Firehouse Grill. Last time I went there they didn't use gloves or hair nets and I had a nice 8 inch hair in the middle of my steamer sub. I use to go there but not anymore. People at my day job also use to go there and all have since stopped because of bad food or seeing bad habits.
SmokeChaser
Or perhaps I won't check this place out, thanks Tony.
Peanuts
They passed the last health department inspection with flying colors--no points or problems. Frankly, I don't remember being in too many sub shops where any of the staff had on hairnets or were wearing gloves. That would include the old Hartles, Gracie's, etc.
golbblog
There is a fairly new Greek drive-through that opened on Northern ave early this Spring (across from CrackDonalds). They make a decent Gyro that saves me from a Hajj down to Montgomery County for Greek food. The only bad thing is they are closed on weekends. sad.gif

Guess I just haven't had extras added to my sandwich anywhere else. Maybe they have improved but that was just to bad for me to go back there again.
Peanuts
Tony, I understand and agree that if I had also had the same experience, I probably wouldn't go back. That said, I haven't had any problems with them other than trying to go there instead of going for a cheeseburger at the Funkstown Tavern (or whatever the name of that place is just up from the fire company). Um!
Udmas
You mean Mcgees second home. laugh.gif
momof3
The Greek place is called Alekos. It's a family owned and operated. Very nice people, clean place and the food is great! One strike against them (location) That building has been several food businesses in the few years that we have lived here. I do hope they do well but being closed on the weekends may be their demise. Their Gyros and Souvlaki are yummy.
CleverNameGoesHere
GREEK FOOD?!?!?!? ohmy.gif ohmy.gif ohmy.gif ohmy.gif ohmy.gif It's been there for months, and I was not notified?!?!? Damn, I know where I'm going for lunch tomorrow. When you said Gyros, golbblog, I figured meh, that's cool, but then momof3 mentioned Souvlaki, and now I'm shorting out my keyboard. ::drools:: Any chance that they also make dolmades? Like, the hot ones with meat, not just the cold ones with rice and spices?

I'm so excited that it's a little sad. Thanks guys! biggrin.gif
golbblog
The guy that owns the place is picky about his food, he wants to make sure the quality is top notch. I am also a fan of Leila's (sp?) kitchen. Now if we can just get some Indian food here. I had some food made by an Indian family that was so spicy I thought I'd bleed from my eyes, blink.gif They hold back for the general population here.
