Why is the keypad arrangement different for a telephone and a calculator?
It is pretty odd that a calculator and a touch-tone telephone have exactly opposite layouts for their keypads, which have many identical components. The reasons behind the differences are not known for certain, but a few theories exist.

The first theory deals with the telephone's circuitry and tone-recognition hardware. When the touch-tone telephone was being designed in the late 1950s, the calculator and adding-machine designers had already established a layout that had 7, 8 and 9 across the top row. Data-entry professionals, and others who used calculators fairly regularly, were quite adept at navigating these keypads. They could hit the numbers extremely quickly, which was great for data entry, but not so great for dialing a touch-tone phone. The tone-recognition technology could not operate effectively at the speeds at which these specialists could dial the numbers. The telephone designers figured that if they reversed the layout, the dialing speeds would decrease and the tone-recognition would be able to do its job more reliably. This theory has little proof to substantiate it, but it does make sense.

A second theory refers to a study done by Bell Labs in 1960. This study involved testing several different telephone-keypad layouts to find out which was easiest to master. After testing several layouts, including one that used two rows with five numbers each and another that used a circular positioning, it was determined that the three-by-three matrix that had 1, 2 and 3 across the top was the easiest for people to use.

Another theory is based on the layout of a rotary telephone. On a rotary dial, 1 is at the top right and zero is on the bottom. When designing the new touch-tone keypad, putting the 1 on the top-right didn't make much sense, because Western writing is read from left to right. But putting 1 on the top-left, and the subsequent numbers to the right, did make sense. Using that formula, the resulting rows fell into place, with zero getting its own row at the bottom.

All of these theories attempt to explain why telephone and calculator keypads are exact opposites, yet no one theory can be pinpointed as the definitive reason. It is common practice today to use the telephone-keypad layout when designing new products that utilize a keypad, such as Automated Teller Machines.

My theory: Lots of (but not all) kids these days are raised with a sense of entitlement... no discipline, no structure. They're given everything they desire, they don't know the meaning of hard work, and they expect to always get something for nothing. As a result, they grow to assume that they're the "King" or "Queen" bee, and everyone else is their lowly servant.

I think some people know no humility because they were tested and failed too many times and YET didn't learn anything. It's those people that didn't learn and simply justified themselves by any means that allow them to hold their head high for no *obvious* reason. They are the ones that skip over the moral of the story. They are the ones that work hard and then bitch about meager results.

They just don't get it. They feel entitled having put forth any effort.

Since some of my friends are Catholic, they went to Mass one day at St. Mary's. Apparently some people were really ticked at the way the priest was leading the Mass (ya know cracking jokes, making Mass a bit more fun and understandable for younger people, especially), but from what I heard, the people stood up during the middle of the service, told the priest to leave, and from there, left. I mean, even if you're not a Church-goer or a person of religious views, you wouldn't just stand up in the middle of a meeting or of a speech, tell the person who is speaking to get out, AND LEAVE!!!!!!! IT'S RUDE!!!!!!!!! WAIT UNTIL THE END TO COMPLAIN!!!!!!!!! And they were in a Church service, too! Ughh....

If I was attending an event (meeting, church service, ceremony, etc.) and somebody was spouting ideas or beliefs that were truly offensive to me, I would have no problem leaving in the middle of the event. However, I wouldn't take it so far as to tell the speaker to leave. But many church members believe that their church is their "home" and that the priest is there to serve them, which I guess explains why they told him to leave. If someone was in my home and offended me, they would be asked to leave as well.

However, from what you describe, the priest was not being very offensive. In my opinion, attempting to make church more fun and interesting to a younger crowd only makes sense, as long as the message was still the same. On the same note, when I was younger and attended church with my parents, I remember some of the church members were disgruntled when, after the chorus performed and I believe a band played as well, the congregation clapped afterwards. A number of people were not pleased with this as this is not church "protocol" or whatever. Of course, I'm thinking what's the big deal?

Why did members from this forum think that they could start a new forum, invite selected members from this forum, gossip about uninvited members from this forum and not get CAUGHT?

Question ModSquad after reading this thread than reading the Guidelines why did Princess get a public warning when some of the members personally attacked her of being someone else? Shouldn't the others also have a public warning? Also do you feel this was handled appropriate on your behalf? IMO you was adding to the conflict.
