I went to a really fun bar this weekend in Baltimore, Howl at the Moon, located at Power Plant Live. The concept is that in the center of the bar there's a small platform for two grand pianos facing each other with a drum set behind. There's a rotating roster of pianists who play and sing whatever songs the audience requests; and then the audience sings drunkenly along. You request a song on a special little form (a stack of them is on the table) and then lay your request on the piano with a tip. The variety of songs that these guys knew was astounding -- among other artists, they played Toto, Aerosmith, Billy Joel, Madness, Violent Femmes, Kenny Chesney, Justin Timberlake, Queen, and Flight of the Conchords. Even some songs from TV shows made their way into the mix (theme from "Greatest American Hero", theme from "The Jeffersons", etc.) The crowd was diverse, mostly in their 30's I'd guess, though there were many in their 20's or 40's, and even a smattering of older folks. I thought it would be very cheesy before going, and it sort of WAS, but it was cheesy in a very fun way. The pianists cracked jokes the whole time and just generally had a lot of fun with the audience. Oh, and I almost forgot, periodically all the waitresses would get up on the bar or the stage and we'd all have to sing and dance along with them (once they did "Time Warp" from Rocky Horror).
Thanks to the various people on this forum who mentioned Howl at the Moon earlier this month. You were right, it was awesome!! You haven't lived until you've heard "Baby Got Back" on a baby grand.
