Who you asking, Id, illegals? laugh.gif

What about the guys I spoke to a week ago -- might lose their custom home construction business which they have run for many years cuz they do not hire illegals and can't compete well with those who do? Maybe they don't count.

Could they be using the illegals as scapegoats?

Right now times are tough for home builders.

The Hispanics that work for us are on the payroll and get paid the same as anyone else would be doing the same job.

Do these construction companies actually hire white people? I hear that they don't think white boys will work as hard so they don't even try to hire them.
Udmas
Yes they hire them. Do they work harder, that depends on the trade they're in.

I was going to say that but I'm glad you did instead.

Most employers are more than happy to pay them the going rate. They still make out, so why wouldn't they? Good, hard workers are always in demand. If you don't pay them a decent wage someone else will.

That may be true now that things have slowed down but I doubt it was a few years ago. Most companies, when they're busy, will at least give you a shot. I remember in 2001 we were hiring anyone with a pulse. In my business, and I would guess in most businesses, you can tell pretty much right away if they're worth keeping.

They say there is still a good amount of work in high-end custom homes in NO. VA-- their specialty. But lots of their competition builders hire ILLEGALS -- not typically the ones you see on your payroll -- I hope. But when they bid against the firms that hire illegal labor they have a tough time competing. And I guess if they complain too loud people saying they are making excuses...using illegals as scapegoats. Maybe you will think otherwise if it starts to hurt your business...

I wonder if there is one legal citizen anywhere in the US that can honestly say that the illegal : housekeeper, gardner, picker, packer whatever by doing what they are doing causes them to not have a job?? I dont want to export them all, just have them on the tax rolls and documented like the rest of us....

I've asked the same question a thousand times and I've yet to find one person. If there is one I wouldn't want to have them as an employee if they can't compete for a job with some poor guy from Mexico who probably can't even speak the language.

Btw, the vast majority of illegals in this country DO pay taxes.

I have heard often about them paying taxes, but it calls to mind a question of how and who's social security number are they using? Also if they are in the lower pay scale, they aren't paying much because according to the Wall Street Journal, the lower 50 percent of wage earners pay less than three percent of total taxes. It's my understanding that illegal immigrants cost the state of MD about 344 million dollars last year. To be fair, haven't verified that, but I can believe it with english as second language, health care, education, etc. And again, whose social security number are they using?
Udmas
Anybodies they can get.

How hard is it to come up with a 9 digit number?

I'll bet anything that you could create a fictitious person, pay him a fictitious salary, and send 15.3% (7.65% for the employee and 7.65% for the employer) of that salary in real money to the government and they would take it without ever saying a word.

Now, if you tried to get benefits that way they'd catch you in a minute. laugh.gif

My guess is that more than 99% of illegals pay SS taxes. The government is a bigger part of this scam than the employer is. They've written the laws so that practically the only way you can be prosecuted for hiring them is to not pay SS taxes on them.

If the name and number don't match, it takes a good 6 months before they start sending notices telling you they don't match.

Ca-Ching! rolleyes.gif

And then you have 90 days to respond... Ca-Ching, Ca-Ching!! laugh.gif

Do you think that when they finally get around to forcing you to fire them that they'll then give the employer their 7.65% back? rolleyes.gif
Ithlilian
Once they start sending notices that the numbers don't match, you make up another.

When your employer asks to see your social security card and you pull out 10 of them and ask, "Which one?"...you might be an illegal immigrant. laugh.gif
Udmas
No, you tell them name and number no good, then wait a week or so and they'll have a new SS and ID card.
