Here we go, another "drinking" establishment in downtown Hagerstown. Let's put more drunk, or impaired drivers on the city streets! Then again, look at the ones who frequent Md. Theater, the many "Professional" folks of the area!! But when it comes to Drunk Driving, some people are always exempt from the appropriate laws!! This is a major area of concern everywhere, so here we are, another "Family" environment turned into a drunk's paradise!! But don't ya dare light up a cigarette!! Yea I know, second-hand smoke is bad for people, BUT SO IS DRUNK DRIVERS!!! And, now they are adding more to city streets, we really need that don't we?? Then, add to that, the other problems associated with public drinking, when "Super Heroes" grow their "invincibility" from alcoholic beverages, and want to take on the world!!! But I doubt those stories will make the paper, as the ones do from bars, so often!

Oh heaven forbid, more alchohol. <gasp>
It's one thing to not want to imbibe for yourself, and if that's what you want to do, good for you, seriously.
The MD Theater is not a "bar", "tavern" or "gin mill". What I've seen there is people having one or two glasses of wine. I've never seen stumbling drunks there.
Have you folks even been to the MD Theater for a performance?

Another case of not being able to please everybody. There is such a thing as responsible drinking. They did not say they will allow people to bring coolers along to their seats like a NASCAR race by golly.

I'd pay to see that!
I don't see what the big deal is, let them serve alcohol and let the people partake of it in their seats. If you don't like it, don't go! I've never liked the whole alcohol-in-the-lobby-only rule at other places anyway, sometimes you have to drink that glass of wine quickly to get back to your seat in time, if there was any sort of line in front of you at all when you bought it. People just need to be responsible, and I bet that the Md. Theatre would be pretty damn vigilant, keeping an eye on attendees to make sure nobody gets out of hand. There is a huge difference between going to the theatre to see the MD Symphony and going to Hammerjack's to see Crack the Sky. You're not gonna go with the intention of getting tanked, that would be stupid and a waste of your money.

WOW talk about going overboard. I guess I just don't see the concern either. It's the theater not Cancun Cantina. Just because a person enjoys an alcoholic beverage with a meal or a show doesn't mean they are going to get drunk, it's that simple. Actually I think it would be funny to see some of the elder residents come out tanked from a Maryland Symphony concert. J/K, I'm all for cracking down on public drunkedness and drunk driving, but I hardly think this a concern at the Theater.

People were already allowed to drink at the MD Theatre. They just changed it so that you could have drinks in your seats. Second, if you ever went to the theater, you'd see that its not exactly a heavy drinking crowd. Normally if people want to drink, they get one or two beforehand or during a break. I don't think this will mean that folks are going to keep leaving their seats to go get smashed. In all the time that alcohol has been served there, this is the first time I've EVER heard of a complaint.. which leads me to believe you just don't know what the heck you're talking about.

Why is it that when an establishment allows alcohol (or in this case, expands the area where alcohol can be consumed), do people ASSume that means people will become falling down drunk? I'm sure the MD theatre patrons would be pleased to know that some people don't think they are responsible enough to control their alcohol intake. Or better yet, did you ever consider that maybe one person would be the designated driver? Or how about that new taxi service? How many drunk driving incidents have there been this year stemming from downtown Hagerstown? Anyone? Bueller?
As others have pointed out, I highly doubt the patrons of the MD theatre are going there to get smashed. IMO, there's nothing wrong with enjoying a drink or two while listening to a concert. Lighten up people - have a drink!

*sigh* C'mon Phish, you know the answers to these questions.
1. Why is it that when an establishment allows alcohol (or in this case, expands the area where alcohol can be consumed), do people ASSume that means people will become falling down drunk?
Just because.
2. Or better yet, did you ever consider that maybe one person would be the designated driver?
No.3. Or how about that new taxi service?
Its a conspiracy to drum up business for Mike Deming.4. How many drunk driving incidents have there been this year stemming from downtown Hagerstown?
