Cagers are often at fault, for sure, and a bike never wins a fight with even a compact car. However, many bike accidents are also the fault of excessive speed on the bike, and with ever more powerful and faster bikes coming out these days it is easy for a rider to get in over his/her head quickly.

Finally, few bikers, at least in this area, wear more than a helmet for protection -- and for Harley riders it is often a "beanie" helmet that is not even DOT legal, just to appear to be legal. And in PA they often don't wear that. That might be "freedom", but IMO it is also stupid.

Very true..........bikers who won't wear helmets are idiots; yet..........the problem solves itself, because we need fewer idiots.

I don't know about that--we still have Gary Busey!

Cross Bones, sweet. Sat on one at dealership in Smokies. Didnt ya mention your hubby may sell his flamethrower? Im in the market. Cars dont run em eh?? My Vette has headers and straight pipes right out the back. Sounds nice. The problem with 4 wheelers and loud pipes is they do not want anyone to kill themselves with CO2 poisioning because their pipes gas em from below. Busey wrecked himself and kissed a curb. HE should wear a helmet. I found when I rode and wore a real helmet I got a false sense of safety and actually went faster. Not wearing a helmet allows greater hearing and vision and makes a rider more safety conscious. Bikes that hit cars that pull out in front of them USUALLY are not looking far enough ahead or going too fast. Every time I ride I consider it a full blown challenge to not get killed. It makes a person feel alive.....

"Sweet" is right! All 17K of it!

Hubby doesn't want to sell his bagger, but I'm getting closer to having him trade it for a bike. Gettin' old, his leg not working well due to his injuries and I'm not tall enough to ride w/o him.

#1Son also has an older Camaro he's trickin' out. Has some sort of vette engine in it, that bitch costs MORE than the new bike what with all his "upgrades". Geesh. I told him, "enjoy it now son, when you get married and have kids you won't see that kinda money for long".

I'm a helmet kinda gal, full face no less. Enjoy your self-imposed "challenge", more power to you, not for me though.

Loud pipes save lives. They are also annoying as hell.

LOUD PIPES SAVE LIVES and nothing and nobody will change my mind.

Well, if facts, data, and science won't change your mind, it's more of a religion, or a faith, isn't it?

If I still lived where some a-hole with illegal pipes cranked it up and cracked into it when I was sleeping, either the law would do something about it, and I’d give ‘em lots of chances, or I would silence the %#@ thing myself.

Loud (illegal,) pipes make lotsa noise, wake people up, they harm hearing, they irritate non-bikers, and they make you a manly man. Not much else.

And for those riding w/o helmets, your hearing is going rapidly, as well.

Straight pipes are NOT illegal in PA Snoop.

I don't know about the "manly man" comment, Lord knows I've seen some swishers on loud hogs.

Wanna call it a religion or faith? I don't care. I only know that my men ARE safer, in part, because of their loud pipes.
Idiot
They are manly men. They sail the Raging Queen and do manly things with their straight pipes in their state of manliness.

Well, Hubby's straight pipes are fish tails. I've cut myself just walking by them so I'd be cautious using them for manly-man stuff on the Raging Queen!

Straight pipes not illegal – either as a pipe itself or for violating noise ordinances??? Didn’t PA recently set limits on car stereo dB levels and start enforcing it pretty seriously?

Believe what you want about the safety factor. Most of the people spouting that don’t want to wear a helmet or any other protective gear at all when riding, so it’s a hollow argument from that perspective as well to me.

But it seems obvious to me that anyone who will disturb his/her neighbors with that obnoxiously loud exhaust doesn’t have much common decency or consideration for others, so they should not expect it from me. I wonder if they’d bi^ch and complain if I drove by their house and blew the horn at all hours of the day. Yeah..they would.

Po-tay-to vs. Po-tah-to, either way I still want one. A Harley, black cherry pearl if it's still in their color line, probably mildly loud, and yes I'll have a helmet and other gear.

Just like with nice pipes on a V-8, you can have nice sound on a Harley and not be illegal and obnoxious. I’ve ridden Harleys like that myself, but I prefer different bikes.

Hubby's bike throws fire. When he cranks her up, every f'n window in my house shakes and I worry about the "good" wine glasses shimmying off the shelf.

The dogs bark.

The neighbors dogs bark.

I cover my ears and roll my eyes.

And then I thank God (and Harley) for those loud straight pipes because I KNOW that some sweet little old lady that really shouldn't be driving anymore because of her bad eyesight will NOT kill my husband because she HEARD those damn, loud pipes.

#1Son picked up his new Cross Bones yesterday. When I heard the roar coming around the corner I again thanked Harley for those damn, loud pipes.

Wow I think they should make Prius' illegal. Blind people and old ladies are in danger.

Yeah, Waynesboro especially stringent on enforcing stereo and zoom-zoom cars, but I haven't noticed an uptick in pulling over loud bikers - YET.

All my men wear full gear. Helmet included. Even on hot days. They enjoy breathing.

My men certainly do not lack common decency/consideration any more than the gentleman across the street whose rooster calls at all hours and who enjoys mowing his lawn early on Sunday morn. We have no neighbors on either side of us for at least 1/2 mile. Frankly I resent that comment, but I'm aware it's not directed towards me in particular. I know many bikers who do not consider their loud exhaust "obnoxious" as they delight in the ear-splitting blast that accompanies their acceleration, just as I know many cagers who enjoy the noise their non-stock exhaust makes. To each his own I suppose.

Please re-read your post, you sound like you have some sort of vendetta against loud piped bikes. Or do you just not like loud noises of any type?

Which ever - to each his own.
Pathogen
Next gimme your defense for loud pipes. wink.gif

I don't have a need for loud pipes, I now listen to the radio while riding.
Now if ya speaking of on the track, dirt, or drag racing that's different

Anyone who knowingly causes loud noise to disturb their neighbors at hours most folks sleep is a jerk, IMO, whether it be loud pipes, loud music, or the use of a jackhammer. But of the 3 I hear more loud-piped bikes and they seem to flaunt the law and get by with it. If your on a racetrack, or out away from people, hey -- go for 140 dB for all I care.
